Read headline, went to article thinking someone had had a boat chartered for their birthday then, commandeered it mid-party for a joyride or something.

2014-01-25 10:35:31 PM
Ah yeah, nothing quite like landing in Victoria, getting off the boat and immediately being accosted by aggresive, opiate-addicted panhandlers on your way to high tea (which is the only gorram thing to do in that shiatty town). I think mr. thiefy mcthiefer-thieve would have fit right in up Victoria way.

Either I'm having freakish deja vu or this happened around a year ago and it's the same guy.  Article is not timestamped.

I did contract work aboard the Victoria Clipper in this story for over a year. Its not an easy boat to pilot, and requires a minimum crew of 2 people. But its about a 200 passenger ferry.

It happened a few months ago. It's back in the news because he was just convicted.

It's far too easy to write this man off as a fool, an idiot, a dunce. "He was probably on drugs" might be accused. "Now that's a drunk!" the jokes will fly. But you know what? This man stepped to the helm and made something happen. The most exciting thing I did today was flirt with the new girl at work, who I probably don't have a shot with. How high did your adrinaline spike today? What big risks did you take? We can chew the fat all day on rights and wrongs, but this man grabbed life by the ass, hopped a boat and sailed off victorious. He LIVED his dream.

It's one of them where they put the gas pedal in a different room from the steering wheel?

i bet the guy probably had very frustrating time attempting to figure out how to be in both the engine room and the command bridge at the same time. likely staring at the banks of consoles of controls repeating the same unrepeatable word to himself as he drifted helplessly.

Yes, that was a pic of the MV Lyubov Orlova. The Soviet era cruise ship which is supposedly drifting somewhere in the Atlantic, which made the news in the past week.  It was sort of a feeble joke that nobody got.

I was hoping for 6 foot tall, not wide.
Maybe if  I can get some buddies to chip in then I won't be so choosy.

Latest on that is that it sunk... how long can rats tread water?

I think you are right, but the operative word is "probably".
