Part of the reason I quit shaving was the cost. The reason I never cut my beard is because it is epic.

I've worked at a P&G for the last 9+ years... and it's not guys not shaving that's reduced their profits. I've never seen more money get pissed away and a company STILL make money. Geez...

"If I were gay, there's no way I'd shave with a disposable razor and a bar of Dial soap, like I do as a straight man. As a gay man, I'd make shaving a ritual. I would prepare my face with a foaming exfoliating cleanser, then I'd use a cucumber shave gel and a sharp blade. I might even use a straight razor that I would sharpen on a soapstone. I would definitely use hot wax to bring my unruly eyebrows under control, and my nose hairs would never see the light of day again."

And they are well-suited for breaking in half and using to slice off one's eyebrows. Be sure to toss a set into your airport carry-on for use in exotic locales.

I hate shaving, but I work in the pharmaceutical industry, so it's almost required for me to be clean shaven.  I'm almost to the point of inquiring about permanent removal options.

I've been thinking about going with that old style razor since saw a recent ad for One Razor.  I was surprised at myself for considering anything Rick Harrison is promoting, but it just looks like a cool idea.  I've been using the old shaving soap and brush for years because the soap is cheaper and the mug doesn't leave a rust ring in my bathroom.  I never liked the 3-5 blade razors and the manufacturers seem intent on getting rid of the 2 blade that I like.

In the morning if my face is a little puffy I'll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches. I can do 1000 now. After I remove the ice pack I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial mask which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.

Maybe everyone is buying their "shave tech" from the Dollar Razor.com douche on TV?

2014-01-25 07:59:30 AM
It could be because people are starting to see that continuously adding new blades and more soothing gel strips is simply a marketing gimmick. It doesn't really do anything. I shaved with two blades, three blades, 5 blades, etc. It didn't really make a difference. I have to shave every day for work. I'd rather not but it's not optional for me. Anyone considering switching to a single-blade safety razor should just do it. Give it a try. There is nothing to lose. I bought one after reading an article on artofmanliness.com.

I was afraid to use a single-blade safety razor the first time because I was brainwashed by TV advertising bullshiat. Having a dickload of blades on a razor doesn't make it safer or smoother. Just make sure you research what you are buying first. The type of razor and the particular blades you use make a difference. Don't let anyone tell you, you are a douche or a hipster or whatever. You can laugh at them when you see them paying $40 for a pack of razor cartridges when you can get 10 blades for $3-$4.

Which due to their thicker metal can never be as sharp as disposables so even with the sharpest Safety Razor "Feather", you'll never get as close of a shave and the blades do NOT last so you do need a new one every other day. I can use a cheap disposable for around 2 weeks. .

I'm on month three or six of a three blade disposable. It's dull, but I don't cut myself and it still cuts. Then again, I like 5 o'clock shadows.

The nice thing about unemployment is that interviews are so rare that I just have no reason to shave. So I still have many razor blades left from when I had a job.

If you can use a cheap disposable for 2 weeks, you have no beard. Now go do your homework; you want to make sure you keep your academic eligibility for soccer.

Season one, episode one of SNL had a parody ad for the "Triple Track" razor. The tag line? "Because you'll believe anything." (I would have written "you'll buy anything," but I digress.

1998 the first triple blade cartridge came out.

Lorne Michaels and PT Barnum were right. Merkur razor + Israeli Personna blades = happy face.

On a side note - stories in HuffPo and Jezebel claim that beards are a sign of misogyny and war on women. I grew a beard to scare the crowd that reads that crap.

P&G also owns Duracell. Since many electronic gadgets have built-in batteries now, their profits are diminishing because they don't sell as many alkalines as they used to.

Safety razor. Two year supply of blades runs you about ten bucks. And it's a damn manly experience, which is quite enjoyable. Grab your badger brush and lather up....

That said, the influx of body shaving should more or less even things out. I am a hairy dude. I have looked at donating ear hair to Locks of Love.  In the history of man, being hirsute has always been sexy.  Now I get here and it's completely undesirable.  I would like to know to whom may I lodge a complaint...

I have this exact one.  I loved it...after a while.  A couple things (based on my experience):

1.  Safety razors require skill.  If you use one like a Mach 3, you will need a transfusion.
2.  It takes a while for your skin to get acclimated to them.  Be patient.
3.  Given 1 and 2 above, a safety razor gives the best shave available.

Don't try to shave your head with one though.

I still do some shaving to keep the beard from looking wild, mostly on the neck, giving the beard a clean line.  And, I shave under my bottom lip.  I do the reverse Howie Mandel, I grow what he shaves.

Dollar shave club?  People seem happy with that.  Me?  I just shave once every few weeks, and grow a beard a few times a year.  When I did need to look decent I just shave the neck and cheeks.

But the company said that increasingly popular body-shaving by men had the potential to offset the loss of the facial-hair business.

A sentence I did not need to read during breakfast.

I've switched almost exclusively to an electric shaver. It doesn't give the "baby smooth" feeling, but it's nice not going through the whole shaving process. I can shave in about two minutes now.

My Older bought me one for my birthday last year along with a badger brush. I absolutely LOVE it! 100 blades will last me almost a year and like you said, they're dirt cheap. I buy Colonel Conk's soap online and really enjoy whipping up a hot lather. It takes a little longer but the shave is the best ever.

bbcard1: Grab your badger brush and lather up....

I took me a while to learn how to spin up a good lather. I also am very conscious about using too much water when trying to get it hot so what I've started doing is putting my brush in my mixing bowl and using my Keurig to heat both up. Works like a charm and the lather stays hot!

I haven't shaved since July last year and have no intention of shaving anytime soon.  If I do though, I am definitely going the safety razor route.  I am just tired of spending money on unnecessary crap like 5-blade razors and the like.  I prefer to spend as little as possible on disposable crap and more on fun things like travel and beer.

Another vote here.  With a double edge blade and a good badger brush, I get better results than the 5-blade cartridge I was using.  The DE blades I use are a nice way to give the big middle finger to Gillette/P&G/Schick and their huge marketing campaigns and overpriced gimmick products.

Solid, square end, and either an old one from a small town junk shop or a new high-dollar one with good reviews. You want carbon steel or stellite for the blade, not stainless, as it tends to be gummy.

Replaceable is just junk.
