lennavan: Serious Black: lennavan: Serious Black: My swim coaches always made sure to impress on every swimmer on their team the need to congratulate the other swimmers in their heat for a good race no matter what. If they touched me out, I was still supposed to tell them good race. If I touched them out, I was still supposed to tell them good race. If they went way slower than their seed time, I was still supposed to tell them good race. The one time that I remember failing to shake hands with the fellow swimmers in my heat and showed poor sportsmanship, the very first thing my coaches told me was that I was a terrible sport for not doing so.

Say you're doing the 4 person relay and you swim 3rd.  This would be like your leg starts out neck and neck and you smoke the kid so bad the anchor doesn't stand a chance of ever catching up, so right after you touch the wall, you say "good race" to the kid you just smoked.

I get sportsmanship.  Rugby has you all beat - the home team takes the visiting team out drinking at the team bar.  But again, you're insane if you think Sherman was doing that to be a nice guy.

I'd wait until the race was over, but yes, I absolutely said good race to the members of a relay, even if we smoked them or they smoked us. I don't recall it happening in a relay, but I'm positive in my dual meets that I smoked a lot of people and would have several seconds (sometimes minutes in longer races) of waiting for the other competitors to finish. I know there were also races where I got smoked and they had to wait for me to finish. We would still shake hands and tell each other good race.

Okay, so we have established that you would have meant it earnestly.  Sherman didn't.  You're insane.

Some schools more than others. I believe Stanford's graduation rate for student athletes is in the 90% neighborhood. I suppose that's some combination of their selectivity, educational resources, and enabling (not necessarily in that order).

Again, just because you're too stupid to be able to achieve doesn't mean you have to degrade others.

And if a university is going to cheat the system to allow you to play football, they cheat so you can be eligible, not to give you a damn 3.9, graduate, and then get into grad school.

TheShavingofOccam123: What I don't understand is why people don't think Sherman was just talking tough for the next opponent in the Super Bowl. I think it was probably more about appearing thuggish towards the next set of receivers than it was about the last set of receivers.

Andrews: "Richard, let me ask you about the final play. Take me through it."
Sherman: "Well, I'm the best corner in the game. When you try me with a sorry receiver like Crabtree, that's the result you're going to get. Don't you ever talk about me."
Andrews: "Who was talking about you?"
Sherman: "Crabtree. Don't you open your mouth about the best. Or I'm ma shut it for you real quick. L.O.B (Legion of boom, the nickname of the Seahawks secondary)."
Andrews: "Alright, before ... Well, Joe, back over to you."

I didn't see it happen--I'd turned off the game after the Bowman debacle. But it reads like he was just posing for the next opponent.

No, I don't really care. I'm just pointing out that the reason people are calling him a thug is because he made things about himself in a postgame interview. You decided that your personal take was representative of everyone else's take.

You're saying that there is no such thing as people using the word "thug" as a code word to hide behind when they want to say "n*gger" and they know that that's unacceptable, simply because you, personally, don't use it that way. That's foolish and shows an extreme level of ignorance about the media and the world as a whole.

lennavan: scottydoesntknow: Based on the mic'd up video I saw yesterday, Crabtree showed the poor sportsmanship first. Sherman went up to him after the play to shake his hand and say "Hell of a game" and Crabtree shoved him away like a crying biatch.

I can't think of a nicer, more genuine time to tell someone "hell of a game" than just after you just beat him 1 on 1 killing his chances but with time still on the clock.  Does it make any sense in your head how Sherman went from kind gentleman shaking his hand and saying "hell of a game" to being an adrenaline jacked up guy talking smack in the interview?

Hell of an analysis you have there.  Hell of an analysis.

Not just that but to further deflate that shiatty defense of his unprofessional conduct "derp he's full of heart and passion derp" and being right after winning, the later interview after he's had even more time to cool off and get over himself, he's still picking at crabtree with his "mediocre. Mediocre. Meeediiiocre." farking childish. He's got some mad deep butthurt about crab tree and that is clear. Anyone who dismisses his clearly antagonistic behavior, and tries to baww and say "oh thug is just an accepted way of saying attractive and successful African american" you're reaching. Deep between your cheeks for that.

Describe to me a situation where anyone of any race could shout that at someone and not be looking for a fight.

Sadly, no - that doesn't work for most non-fantasy-football guys.

He was one of the best as a rookie. He was one of the best last year and didn't make the Pro Bowl despite leading the league in interceptions and passes deflected (and passer rating against). He was an All-Pro because people within the league vote on that; fans vote on Pro Bowlers.

He's been the best in the league since he's been in it and still people are talking about this being his first impression.

Because he plays for Seattle.  Brent Favre could come back and play for Seattle and no one would know because no one cares about Seattle.

You think a football player can't have a legitimate GPA just because he is a football player?
Impossible? no. I also can't say it's impossible the Earth has been visited by space aliens.

But which is FAR more likely, a 3.9 football player or another example of a cheat for grades? The numbers say the latter.

So, if I understand correctly, absent any supporting information, you assume that a person with a recorded 3.9 GPA likely cheated because he is a football player, even though all accounts of him in interviews describe him as articulate and intelligient.  I am guessing that you are therefore somehow supporting the idea that a guy who merely needs a passing GPA to play would not only cheat, but would also do so in a manner that would give him a 3.9 GPA, which would certainly draw more scrutiny than a very average GPA.

Also, I would like to see your substantiation for the idea that the numbers support that most college football players cheat.

Once again, for those of you who missed it the first time:

Stanford does NOT allow student athletes to receive preferential treatment in grading. I'm sure that your crappy college did, I know mine did, but Stanford does not.

Also, while I'm at it:

Stanford does NOT admit professional athletes to its Masters' programs just for shiats and giggles.
