Apostrophes on street signs?  I don't know that I've ever seen that.  Or at least not often enough so as to notice that they were used incorrectly.

I think they are talking about one city so it should be "city's" - the misspelling of which is likely intentional given subby's other inappropriate use of apostrophes.

Who doesn't get this?  It is one of the most basic rules or grammar but you just keep seeing it OVER and OVER and OVER.  Also, TVs, CDs, DVDs etc.

If apostrophe's get nazi'd, only nazi's will have apostrophe's.

I had this kind of out-of-control vigilantism rocking my streets in Democracy 3. The solution is legal and widespread prostitution.

The street naming policy - which does not apply to existing street signs - also bans names which would be "difficult to pronounce or awkward to spell' and any which "could give offence" or would "encourage defacing of nameplates".

In other news, there are no more street signs in Wales.

I have more of an issue with unnecessary apostrophes than with missing ones. I saw a sign yesterday that said "used tire's for sale" and I could barely contain my fury.

On the other hand, maybe they were stating that there is a single used tire for sale.

In America, apostrophes are specifically discouraged as part of word messages on road signs.

As long as we are being grammatically correct here on Fark:

"to smart" is wrong.....

"too smart" is right.

/ whatever, I know that the differences between "to", "too", and "two" can be confusing.....simple mistake

// plus, on the internets and especially on Fark....."moran" is the correct spelling

True, but the article is talking about just one city, so the proper term would be "city's" (possessive).

I just assumed each of these people were introducing errors ironically.  Were these honest mistakes?  I can never tell in grammar threads...

Yikes, is this a form of Poe's Law?  I can't tell if half of the idiots seriously "correcting" people above are being sarcastic or not.  It seems to go several layers deep.

I'm guilty of avenging grammarianism, but this woman is out of her gourd.

Director Kathy Salaman said she "fully supported" grammar campaigners who have been using black marker pens to fill in the missing apostrophes and said that leaving apostrophes out of signs could confuse children and teach them that grammar isn't important.  She added: "If I was walking along with a marker pen in my pocket and I saw a missing apostrophe, it would be difficult to resist the temptation to fill it in."

Yeah, no.  Vandalism is still a bigger crime than poor grammar, even by the government.

As long as we're at it, what the FARK is that colon doing after "She added" ?

Oh yeah, and she misspoke too; it's "if I WERE walking" !

But is it actually vandalism if it correct's an error, changing a sign to make it show it's intended meaning all along?

Cambridge City Council ruled that apostrophes should be removed from street signs to avoid confusing emergency services, but the city's Good Grammar Company warned "if they take our apostrophes, commas will be next."

First they came for our apostrophes, and we did not speak out.
Then they came for our commas and we did not speak out.
Then they came for our periods and we did not speak out
