Why watch this dog and pony show? Does anyone really remember the State of the Union speeches? This is not a slam on this Administration! But in the recent past I can't think of one that shocked or surprised anyone. It's just a rehash of whatever talking points that were parroted on the Sunday shows the day before. Hell they release the whole thing a few hours before the speech. Just save yourself the hour of so of applause.

I'm more interested in whichever rising star the Republicans put out there to offer up the rebuttal and the entertaining ways that person will inevitably f*ck it up.

The MLK "I Have a Dream Speech" was also pretty dull.  Nothing more boring than someone explaining a dream they had.  Yawn.

Democrats hear "moderate austerity" and think "tax increases on the wealthy and reduced spending growth."  Republicans hear "moderate austerity" and think "eliminate Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, Food Stamps, Unemployment, and kick out the illegals."

Oh, and tax cuts for the rich.

Make that 3 rebuttals this year.

Apparently, having 1 or 2 speeches in the same night where a Republican public figure gets to speak, uninterrupted, at length, isn't enough risk of a PR disaster for the GOP big wigs.

In recent years, its not the SOTU speeches that have been interesting, so much as the "responses."

Beat me to it.  That's the only one I remember, and not for the speech content.

This. Really this. I don't need to go to the political equivalent of a pep rally.

What's the 3rd? McMorris Roberts is female, so she probably at least has a sense of how not to fark things up on the women's rights stuff, but Mike Lee's might be interesting. Haven't heard of a third rebuttal.

State of the Unions are about more than that. It's where the President sets out their legislative priorities, which can sometimes be interesting and useful to those of us in the political world. It's a big picture outline of the President's view of current issues, which is valuable if you're trying to stay informed about our democracy, especially if you're one of the many Americans who doesn't follow the news particularly closely.

Also, don't watch the Sunday shows. They rot your brain. It's a bunch of predictable questions with scripted answers and no real follow up, because hosts don't want to annoy their guests and push them to other networks. It's just a bunch of talking points.

\Will be going to a watch party for the SOTU.
\\Drinking with a bunch of young liberal political types.
\\\It very much is a pep rally.

Rand Paul will be doing his own rebuttal on behalf of Rand Paul.

No, I am not kidding in the least.

Well, that should at least have some amusement value.

I still remember W. promising us flying cars, so they are not without merit...and I like to watch them.  I consider them the superbowl of speeches, maybe if they had entertaining commercials during them, they may be more watchable.

Wouldn't mind some other changes: no applause or maybe an applause clock (like a shot clock)

I just want to see the response to the state of the union. If it's anything like last time...OH BOY!! :D
