I commute on Metro North every day and they are making a great case for me moving back into New York City. Why in the hell am I paying $330 a month to commute on a train system that is always late and always having power issues? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!

Jesus!  No wonder traffic sucks so bad in New York, when passengers on the transit system are forced to pay their own way entirely but the car commuters get subsidies...

Wny not try the George Washington Bridge by living in NJ, Hoboken with it coddling by its state governor, or just a few miles west, Pennsyltucky and some Amtrak bus hybrid?

Because paying taxes to two states is more fun that just one.

I'm about a hundred miles outside the city and 25 miles from the nearest Metro North station, and right now I'm paying between six and nine separate taxes (that have fark-all to do with mass transit) to fund the MTA. There's been a payroll tax that'shiat my household for a good $500 at its highest, there's a sales tax that extracted around another $150 or so, a real estate transaction tax, a petroleum business tax (passed along to me), and there's something called a "long lines tax" that applies to everything from phone bills to trucking companies.

The MTA right now has a $1.9 billion surplus, btw.

I don't know, but Metro-North is a very large commuter railroad back east, where we have electricity and indoor plumbing.

They should seriously be using those funds to get the New Haven line up to snuff (and to finish the 2nd Ave subway line). I live in Connecticut and commute in daily and that line is in dire need of some MTA love. It'd be nice for one thing if the morning trains actually had enough farking cars so that people didn't have to stand the whole 1+ hour ride into the city. It'd also be nice if they actually arrived and departed on time in the mornings. I usually don't have a problem with the trains at night but the morning commute is always a hot mess.

It's a train that you can ride between a station near home and a station near your workplace.  It can be an attractive option in large cities if you live more than (say) 5 miles from where you work.

NYC metro infrastructure is run down and full of single points of failure that would boggle the mind of any competent Business Continuity professional.

I am a regular victim of NJ Transit (and Amtrak by proxy). Trains are late, old, beat up, left in flood zones during tidal surges, staff are ornery, blah blah blah. The buses are victim to the traffic woes at the Lincoln tunnel. All it takes is for one shiatty old bus to break down in the tube or bus lane, and you're toast for at least an hour.

When population density exceeds about 30,000 people per square mile over a large area (or floor area ratio exceeds 2) passenger trains can be a better transportation mode than cars. So basically they're a New York City thing.

Why should we waste our money in people who send their property tax dollars to another state?   Plenty of subway lines that could use some improvement before worrying about the B&T crowd.
