Canada shouldn't host the WC until we have a team that isn't embarrassing.

If Canada is wililng to give FIFA more in bribes than the US is,, more power to them.  Let them have it.

It'll go to yet another hellhole that's willing to give FIFA everything it wants, though.

Almost every other event? I think the last time we hosted was a decade ago.

They can have the World Series or NBA Finals.  All they need to do is put in some effort. Well, maybe a little more than that -- but there's a chance!

They were making fun of this a bit on the radio today. Soccer Canada released a very detailed strategic plan for the next 5 or 10 years, and this was tucked in as one sentence in section 3. It looked very much like an afterthought. They had these long paragraphs on each of the other ideas saying how they planned to do it and how it will affect soccer in Canada, and then at the end of the section, it just had "Prepare a bid on the 2026 FIFA World Cup."

Don't worry. After Qatar in 2022 (do they still get the auto-bid if the US has to step in to host it?) Canada will totally look like a World Cup-caliber team.

Hey!  There are a lot of 10 year olds who play soccer!  Then realize they were just running back and forth on a field and quit within a few years.

Right now in the Elo rankings, Qatar (85th) sits ahead of Canada (92nd). The Canadians just aren't good enough. They didn't even make the farking Hexagonal. They finished third in a group with Honduras, Panama and Cuba. They drew with Puerto Rico. They drew with St. Kitts and Nevis. Come on. Get back to the show before you try and host it.

July 7 (Gold Cup): Lost 1-0 to Martinique in Pasadena, CA
July 11 (Gold Cup): Lost 2-0 to Mexico in Seattle, WA
July 14 (Gold Cup): Drew 0-0 with Panama in Denver, CO
September 8: Drew 0-0 with Mauritania in Oliva, Spain

October 15: Lost 3-0 to Australia in London, England
November 15: Lost 2-0 to Czech Republic in Olomouc, Czech Republic

Canada can have a World Cup as soon as they qualify for one. I don't think they've been since US Soccer got its shiat together back in the late '80s and began qualifying regularly again.

2014-01-23 10:51:49 PM
Why is Canada so bad at soccer domestically? They have cities with diverse populations that play the game and I've read Toronto is one of the better soccer towns in North America. MLS teams in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Seems like they could at least be on the level of Jamaica or Panama, where they are consistently making the Hex and have a chance to make the World Cup.

Losing to Mauritania in soccer is basically losing to the desert.

I'm rooting for the US to snipe Qatar's bid and Canada in 2026. Concacaf needs good teams. Canada has potential.

2014-01-23 10:54:47 PM
"I think it's time for Canada to step up to the plate"

That right there, that's the wrong metaphor to use if you want to host a football world cup.

According to Wikipedia, Canada has only made 1 WC and that was in 1986. They lost all 3 group matches and failed to score in any of them.

Mrtraveler01: After the disaster that Qatar is turning out to be, FIFA might do the same thing the Olympics did and give the World Cup to a country that would be a safe bid.

If Fifa insists on holding the Qatar World Cup in the winter, I would love to see the European and North American teams basically send their B Teams (basically their under 21s and over 32s) to play there.  Just keep playing club football at the same time as the World Cup.

Then hold a big World Invitational tournament in the summer without Fifa involvement.  Have a World Cup in everything except the name in America or Britain or Germany.  Sell the TV rights, get most of the top 20 or 30 teams in the world to head there ... it would break Fifa's corrupt back.

/not sure if Big Money would go along with this plan.

I think it's a metaphor alluding to the fact that Canada will step up to the plate but then Washington D.C will steal the bid off them just when they start doing well.

Paduke: Why is Canada so bad at soccer domestically? They have cities with diverse populations that play the game and I've read Toronto is one of the better soccer towns in North America. MLS teams in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.

Canada's soccer passion is almost entirely driven by first generation immigrants. This passion abates as latter generations are assimilated into Canadian culture. Fortunately, we have very liberal immigrant policies so there's always a steady stream of them keeping up the appearance of a strong soccer following.

As for homegrown talent, you gotta understand the southwest corner of BC (Vancouver, Victoria) is the only place in the entire country where the ground doesn't freeze rock solid for five months of the year. This puts a damper on any outdoor activities or the enthusiasm for excelling in them (but its excellent for hockey). And also because of this, the majority of Canada's best athletes in warm weather sports, especially rugby and baseball, tend to come from southwest BC.

Canada is a cold country. Always has been. We have short summers, wet autumns, and long winter nights. It's not the sort of climate conducive with kicking a ball around on a pitch (also: soccer is antithetical to the Canadian way of life, which is rugged and hardy. What's the point of a game if you can't hit people?). We suck at the Summer Olympics -- we only win a handful of medals each time. But Winter Olympics? Yeah, watch us clean house next month.

/mostly snark

Paduke: I'm rooting for the US to snipe Qatar's bid and Canada in 2026

Fun fact: For every World Cup, the United States is the emergency 2nd location if the host city falls through and can't support the tournament for whatever reason (either political or financial or logistical).

It's because the United States is the only country with the ready-made infrastructure to host a World Cup right now if they decided to have one. Every other country needs years of lead time to build the necessary venues. The US has over 100 50k+ seat pro and college football stadiums that can be easily tooled for the task.

Imma call bullshiat on this one.  Britain, France or Germany don't have the infrastructure to host a month-long, 32 team soccer tournament at short notice?

It's more like America has the infrastructure and the media money to have the tournament at the drop of a hat.  Profit would be made by holding it in western Europe, but more profit would be made by holding it in the good ol' US of A.

Malarkey. England or Germany are ready at the drop of a hat. There are even 8 J-League stadiums over 40k... so I think Japan could host again at the drop of a hat.  Mexico has the stadiums, but they'd have to spend a lot of money to get security up to 21st century major event standards.

Haha, enjoy the passing relevance of your favorite sports in 20 years. Soccer is number one sport in the world, and with the US growth of immigrant population and average white guys like me that can afford whatever (tickets, merch, TV rights)? Yeah, I'm sure baseball has a bright future.

it's really america's only chance given the anti-bribery laws in the us. neither the olympics nor the world cup is coming back anytime soon.  sure the media rights and sponsorship deals would be huge, but that's not cash in envelopes so the committees aren't lean towards america anytime soon.  got to love corrupt douchenozzles sinking revenue to pad their own pockets.  hooray sports!
