Good morning everyone!  Been a pretty nice week here at the B4 home.  Kittiehs are getting some extra attention after being neglected yesterday while dad was away on a date.  Spent all day trying to make our way through the Blue Ridge Parkway, only to find almost all of it closed because of ice and snow.  So we spent six hours driving around the state and just generally enjoying the day regardless of our plans kind of being changed.  Finished up the night wanting a cup of coffee, and entered the Huddle House.  Probably the worst cup of coffee I've had in a long time, and she agreed.  So our day of hiking pretty much washed out, had horrible coffee, and had a great day regardless.  So today is going to be spent taking care of the kittehs, because they were not too happy about being alone all day, and especially not getting their wet food and ham treats until almost 11 last night.  Great day all around, and another is planned in two weeks.  Hope all are well here and enjoy a great weekend.

We're big fans of metal here, but have recently been listening and getting into this electronic genre called witch house. Can be dreamy and/or creepy, depending on the song or artist.

Handsome kitteh. BF ain't hard to look at either. Glad he will be gainfully employed..meanwhile..how ya doin? Nice to see you.

I gave him the compliment and he blushed! He's definitely a keeper. He started working last Friday and loves it thus far.

I'm doing ok. Feeling a bit isolated from people lately, but I need to make an effort to hang out with my friends. Been too much of a hermit for the past year and I kind of need to learn how to socialize again.

I've been hired for an as-needed, subbing librarian job. Heading to HR on Monday for paperwork and training. Hoping to find another position to pair with it. Looking forward to the day when I land something full-time that offers benefits.

Riku loves that I'm home much of the day and I spoil him like mad. Sometimes I turn the electric blanket on for him despite it not being cold.

Lilyspad, that's a great picture of you in the Seahawks troll hat. I'm not a huge fan of football, but the whole Washington + Colorado Superbowl/legalization meme is pretty amusing.

Also tigerose, happy end of probation period! *happy dance*

Difficult German Name (I looked at your profile & don't find it that difficult but then spouse & I were there ~8 yrs in 1970s & do speak it still halfway competently -- equals Common German Spelling) I'm not La Historienne tho some seem to think so.  Caturday was well established already when I joined near end 2008.  sherpa18 when he finally surfaces again will know furr sure.  However I did find, not quite via GoodSearch which is my preferred InfoSeek method:  all this in Know Your Meme:

Caturday originated on 4Chan's /b/ in the mid-2000s. Urban Dictionary's earliest definition was added on October 24th, 2006.[1] One of the earliest archived Caturday threads from 4chan was started on December 12th, 2006.[2]
One of the earliest instances of Caturday in the wild can be found on Caturday.com[3], the personal site of Sharyn, a Blogspot user from New Hampshire. The blog, entitled "Caturday," was created on November 16th, 2005[4] to "write stories about cats and collect useful information for cat lovers." The photos posted were of her personal pets, not LOLcats.
A LiveJournal community for Caturday[5] image macros was created on February 5th, 2006. As of October 2011, there are 2196 members.

Hope that helps some -- sorry didn't capture footnote extensions. But does make it appear that Caturday is indeed Bigger & More Widespread Than Life Size!

Hello, Caturday peoples! I just wanted to say that Caturday has been a comforting Saturday ritual for a long time. No matter what happens throughout the week (and right now RL is kicking my butt) I can always depend on this wonderful, caring, quirky group to cheer me up, and continue my faith in humanity (I feel ya, RWDA). Hugs to everyone going through tough times, and a happy birthday to Valnt9!

I have a question that Lauluja might be able to answer: exactly how long has Caturday been a "thing" on Fark? My memory of it stretches back to about 2007ish. Any ideas?

Anyway, Jimmy is wondering why I feel the need to look at cats on the internets all the time when he is  right here.img.fark.net

Early poesey...hankies? You decide.

The kiss

Lying alone in bed.
Wee hours
Of the Morn.

Silent.
Alone.

Mind churning.
So many,
Things to do.

Four paws
And bold presence,

Settle upon my chest.
Purrs,
Echo in my heart.

Leaning forward,
You gently lick
My cheek bone.

Tiny, tender
Swipes,

As if I might break.

Then,
A testing of teeth,
Upon my skin.

And I slept,
Anchored by your
Love.

I feel it even now,
Hours after.

So unusual.
Such a gift.

A kiss.

She has eip, but will be lurking here this Caturday.  Could you please email or add thread message telling her nice things, giving good vibe/mojo, and letting her know she is not a forgotten lil Alien?  She is having an awful time of it up there, and could use some cheering up.

Thank you all.

*tap, tap* Hello? Is this thing on?

i415.photobucket.com

I can haz Caturday at last ... due to something totally weird - I still can't believe this (keep reading):

So, I go to take out my trash earlier today and run into my neighbor across the hall who is trying to drag some furniture out of her place, and I offered to help her with it (assuming it too was going to the dumpster). Turns out, she lost her job and has to move, so I spent the next few hours helping her carry stuff. At one point she asked me if I didn't have anything better to do, and I told her that if my internet had not been cut off, I would be spending my time with my Caturday friends. Turns out, she is a long time lurker!

A few minutes ago, she rang my bell and when I answered the door, she looked at me and said are you sherpa18? I admitted I was, and asked HTF she could possibly know that. She pointed to my head, and it hit me that I was wearing my Alien Invasion "Official Sherpa" cap all the time I was helping her.

She then informed me that she had just caught up on the thread and that people were worried about me, and gave me her wireless password so that I could come and check in. Unfortunately, my access will only be be good for a day or two until she leaves, but I want to thank her for doing this for me. (And I hope to drag her into posting on Caturday eventually)

Meanwhile, there is no way I can read the whole thread and respond to everyone, so let it suffice to say that I have missed you all, and hope to be back in the near future. Since I have an ISP/phone/TV package deal, my phone is also FUBAR, but hold on to my #, if I can get this situation straightened out in the next week or two, it should still work. However, please do NOT use my PO box #, that is probably gonna be closed in a few days.

Who's the culprit? Jack or Gremie? Definitely a captionable pic!

They totally look like Jack & Gremie!  I thought there was something familiar about that pair.  Don't think Gremie is quite as fluffy as the cat in that pic though.   And I'm sure neither of them would EVER destroy a feather pillow.... would they, Gremlin1?

D'oh! Totally didn't realize you were the poster and not  Gremlin1!

Would these faces destroy furniture?

Tommy just walked through the living room carrying another bird.
That is the third on this week, I have saw a lot of small birds in the yard today, now there is one less.
The sky is clear blue and it is near 80 today so I have the door open to get some fresh air. I will have to get some screen doors up this summer. Why does he bring them inside to kill and eat?

To show you what a great hunter he is!!!!  Duh.....  :D

I guess I should stop making fun of him for having to use a trap to catch mice,

I just saw a flicker of movement in the front yard and looked up in time to see three deer running across the yard! I thought I saw two more and when I stepped out to the porch I saw the horses standing by the clothes line staring at the the deer as they ran off. Those deer crossed right in front of the horses. I should raise the blinds more often!

Don't be.  I miss the furry little boogers, but I'm embracing my new life, and not looking back.  Dexter is a good kitteh, and Sophia has added a wonderful bit of insanity, but it will be nice to settle back down and not have the fur kids fight for attention.  Who knows?  Might get something else in the house at some point, but I am happy with what I have, happy with my place right now, and happy that I've got my smile back.  Yesterday showed me I can be happy again, and it really opened my eyes.  Yes, it was a great day, and yes, I was stunned that it went as well as it did.  But aside from some nervousness, I just relaxed and let myself enjoy the day with no expectations whatsoever.  Now that I'm past that first hurdle, I know that life can go on, and I don't have to hide from it.

Diocletian's Last Cabbage: Happy Birfday, Valnt9!  Fresh, hot cabbage cake for your birthday!

I was being snarky, but I did a GIS for "cabbage cake" and found this...

/reading the recipe and seeing the results, words fail me

My mother used to make sauerkraut cake - which is basically hot cabbage. It was really good actually, of course if you put enough chocolate and sugar in it you can make almost anything taste good.  Sauerkraut cake recipe

Precisely! I was driving with my Dad on his yearly Snowbird migration. To plug in the timer for the lights he unplugged the cable box, Incidentally this is the very first thing I said to everyone @ Comcast. Supervisor said it was a common problem too!

TY for the welcome back! Over the last 3 weeks, 4 days a week I've spent 117 hours editing an audio-book. It leaves little time to even lurk :( Thankfully I have all of Feb. to edit the next one! It's a YA Sleepy Hollow retelling.  So far it's a really good book!

Funny, I saw torbie and calico...this pile of floofy is the kitten of a tiny all-black Mommy and a Maine Coon Daddy (who may or may not be full blood - you are welcome to try and catch him.) She was part of an unexpected litter.

I love my cat. I really do.She does a really good job of keeping the house varmint free. However, I wish she would 1) Stop playing with her food and 2) stop bringing me live foods to play with. I mean I really appreciate the thought and all. And it's very sweet. I also really wish she would rethink her plan to bring her live foods to me while I am sleeping in my bed. I really appreciate the gesture but mouse with cat spit sauce is not on my menu of favorite snacks. She thinks it makes the perfect midnite treat, especially since I didn't even have to get out of bed to enjoy play-kill-eat time.  She then let it escape so she could hunt it all nite. In the bedroom. Of course. Because she wanted me to share in the fun. She is one thoughtful cat. She finally killed it about an hour ago and is now tenderizing it. Her method of tenderization is throwing the thing all over hell and gone. She is currently bouncing it off the ceiling and batting it like an All Star big leaguer. The look of pride on her face when it landed on my keyboard was priceless. It brought a tear to my eye (mostly because I was screaming like a little girl but that's beside the point).  Like I said, I really love my cat.

PS She is really mad at me now because I took it away from her.  I'm sorry, I really can't like the sound of crunching mouse bones. Nor do I like playing mouse head ping pong or squish the carcass with your toes.

hawaiijenno: Does anyone have any advice related to an intercostal muscle strain?  I fell flat on my back on ice a few weeks ago. I thought I was better, but I reached up to a shelf this evening & felt a pop in one of my ribs & had about 60 seconds of really intense pain.  Now it's just really, really sore if I try to lift anything with that side or raise my arm above shoulder height.  I think I just pulled one of the muscles, since there's no swelling

That happened to me (falling on my back on ice), but I got checked out by a doctor.  Nothing was broken so he gave me a regimen of stretches to work it out.  If you can manage it at night, move your arm on the affected side above your head, elbow bent to start.  The next night try to sleep with your arm straight above or even elbow level, then the next night sleep with your arm straight clear above your head (as difficult as it sounds).  That keeps the muscles in your back stretched out so they don't get used to being tight.

He also gave me a printout of leaning stretches that looked like a Jane Fonda 1985 workout tape.  Just imagine throwing your arm over your head and trying to touch the opposite leg.  It's exactly as painful as it sounds.

I'm not sure any of that helped - it still took two weeks before I felt "right" on that side of my back.

I am going to say, take either ibuprophin or naproxin, and call your Doc asap. Muscle strain can be very difficult to deal with, let a pro evaluate you. I suffored for 8 months with a foot injury. Within a month, p.t. Made it feel sooo much better. And now I know how to strengthen my feet, so I don't have this issue again...

Been a 'fun' week.  Right now the idiot kid next door has his car doors open blaring supposed music...and I am at the back of my house and I can here it!

Then Hoover, one of my dogs, has had the squishies.  I tried pumpkin, it helped a bit but he still has squishies so off to the Mean Dr Lady today.  The bad bacteria is greater than the good bacteria and this equals squishies.  He has medicine, special foods and is currently sleeping next to me.  I really do not want to clean up more squishies.  I have to clean the carpet tomorrow, it was time again anyway but dang....

Oh gosh, I didn't see your original post. After my last accident. (A jerk late for his dr. Appoint was doing 120 in the fast lane, pulled into the slow lane not seeing me and totaled my car) I immediately emailed the driver's (now former insurance company) with my aches and pains, followed by a trip to the doctor the next day. Please do the same.... Four years later still in the court system looking for progressive to even pay a start on my medical bills. Fortunately, MetLife, my insurance co stepped in and covered most everything. Complain about any/everything, get yourself into a doctor for any complaint, etc. in my instance I required knee surgery. I did not think it was anything but a bruise at first.

^^ This ^^

Long story much shortened: Accident in about 2000 (rain, highway, idiot merged without seeing traffic slowing and nailed our poor car in the trunk) left me with whiplash and a dislocated sacrum. I felt no pain, just stiff, until the endoprhins wore off: funny how many endorphins are released when you watch someone coming at you at increasing speed.

Police responded and made note of any stiffness/soreness, as well as what had happened, so when I saw a dr the next day the other driver's insurance had no wiggle room about paying medical bills.

/miss that car

She has eip, but will be lurking here this Caturday.  Could you please email or add thread message telling her nice things, giving good vibe/mojo, and letting her know she is not a forgotten lil Alien?  She is having an awful time of it up there, and could use some cheering up.

Thank you all.

ALIEN!!!!

HAPPY THOUGHTS, PRAYERS, HUGS FROM CATURDAY LURKERS

If you think sunshine brings you happiness, then you haven't danced in the rain.

When I was in grade school, they told me to write down what I wanted to be when I grew up.
I wrote down happy.
They told me I didn't understand the assignment,
I told them they didn't understand life

A smile is as close as
A hot shower.
No lines at the supermarket.
Getting mail.
Hot towels fresh out of the dryer.
Waking up and realizing you still have a few hours left to sleep.
Knowing that Caturday friends love and miss you.
Knowing you've done the right thing, no matter what other people think.

You ever wonder about the people who post pics on the net, probably just to a group of folks they know, and how they react if they are just cruising around the net "la de la la la" *clicks link* and suddenly they're looking at a pic they posted, like elebenty months or years ago, except now it's somewhere completely different they'd never been to or seen before? I wonder how common that really is.

I should start making up back stories for some of them.

I understand how people could feel about that.
It's hard to believe but the the picture below set off an argument between me and my sister at Christmas.
I was showing her the photo at my niece's house on the day, I had said I posted it on fark for something and she went nuts. "You posted that where anyone could see it?""How dare you." etc, etc.
This from the person with a facebook page full of real life info and photos. A person who's email address is their real name and has my info posted on ancestry dot com complete with name, birth date and city of birth so she could track our family history. But she was worried about this picture.

Hector is a water kittie. I have caught him splashing around in the water bowl and the toilet bowl, not trying to drink, just stick his front paws in and splashy, splashy.

Here he is at the sink. He tries to bite the water stream, then tries to catch it and licks the water off his paws. I need to get a Drinkwell 360 (eventualy when i can afford it) instead of using a mixing bowl for water. I think both cats would love it.

*blush*. Thanks.
In my area I have seen severe differences in upbringings and I as well have a less than stellar view on my semi-urban area for the next generation. Some are awesome, but like the 14 year old who an officer was going to ask why he was not in school that ditched a gun that went off, had an arrest record at that age as long as your arm, I am seeing more and more of that due to disconnected parents. (The extreme far end, obviously). Income does not seem the issue, just the involvement of parents.

Let me add to the good news folks. I missed caturday last week delivering two cats from a nice lady who passed away to her grandson. I spent a couple of late evenings at her assisted living place so the cats could get used to me then drove them "up Nordt" in a four hour trip that the cats were NOT appreciative of. However, they were very happy at their new furever home, and started exploring, using litterboxs, after an hour or so. I got an email from the grandson that they seemed happy after a couple of days. Kudos to the assisted living place letting the cats stay there for a week until they could be moved out without charging rent.

John Buck 41: spinach gunk: How's Buddy?

He's not too bad, thanks.  His appetite's still a bit weird, but nevertheless he's eating a healthy amount each day.  Still likes his prescription food (when he feels like eating that is).  Taking all his meds like a good boy.  Things still coming out the other end OK.  He doesn't want to do much walking these days, we only ever walk as far as the street / front garden of the building now, but there are still all kinds of people and things to sniff and bark at out there so I take him out fairly frequently for his amusement.

At night he "walks" with his nose and ears.  We go to the end of the path, stand very still, and for a few minutes we sniff/listen as far as we can to the east.  Then we turn around and do the same thing to the west.  Once we are satisfied that all the pertinent information has been gathered, we go home for a treat and a nap.

My nephew is a teacher in Downeast Maine. They've had a bit more snow that we have had here and used up their allotment of 'snow days'. His school doesn't get out til 6/20, as opposed to the original end date of 6/6. Not to get all 'when I was a boy' but yeah, back in the day we needed a freakin' blizzard to cancel school.

A generation of snowflakes (no pun intended) is being raised. I fear for our future (and not just for this reason).

i know what you mean... the only year i remember going over was when we used our snowdays during winter, and then mother nature went bipolar the first week of may and randomly dumped half a foot of snow on us...  wouldn't have been much of an issue, but as the buses had no way to get to the rural kids, they just shut down for a day while it all melted...  otherwise the bus company would send someone out to drive the routes every morning when it snowed, and if the buses could make the routes, school was on...

WTF, indeed!  That's really sad, and infuriating.  Those parents are just asking their kids to hate or at least disrespect them when they reach adolescence.  The local elementary school has coats to lend.  It's a small enough community that the school usually gets them back.

The Ice Queen: Benevolent Misanthrope: The Ice Queen: For the record, Ice Queen hates computer and she hates Windows 8 and she hates Pleurisy.

Now,
YEAH CATURDAY!!!

Oh wow - I had pleurisy the first two times I got pneumonia.  It was hell, because I was still coughing like a harbor seal.

Poor thing. <pat on head>  Feel better.

That's what I figured happened here. Caught pneumonia over Christmas and never complete shook it. Think I'd rather deal with the pneumonia....

Pneumonia is bad, yes, but at least it doesn't feel like someone is stabbing you with a ice pick every time you breathe in. Or out.  Or try not to breathe.  And Cthulhu forbid you should cough.

I'm just throwing this out there for the laughs. Last weekend, one of the guys had a hair bandana for the Seahawks, and took it off during lunch. I put it on for fun, and a manager took this pic. I look completely deranged, but I don't care. :D

LOLOL.... you look cute!  Did they let you wear it while you worked?

There's nothing like being stopped in traffic, looking in your rear view mirror and seeing a Honda Ridgeline coming towards you with no driver. The guy was trying to get something off the floor and sat up just in time to see his car smash into mine. I'm fine, my car, however, is pretty crunched up.

This is Milo. He has a tooth flosser fetish. I have an annoying space between a couple of back molars that gets food jammed every time I eat. So, I've got these things stashed in the bathroom, by my computer, on my nightstand, etc. And Milo steals them and hoards them. I clean out underneath the diningroom table every so often about a half a dozen of these things at least. Weirdest cat (well, except the one that likes to lick walls).

Sickapie: Got an email last night from the superintendent of my daughter's school reminding parents to dress our kids appropriately during this cold weather.  Really?  I was going to send her today wearing her favorite gymnastics leotard, but thanks for the heads up, Captain Obvious.  Honestly.

It's been around -2F windchill here all day. I saw the kid next door walking down the street wearing his heavy winter coat with the hood up and snow boots with khaki shorts. He's 11 I think he should know he's going to freeze even if his Mom didn't and she's a nurse.

dropbox might not be my first choice as a way of getting pics up to the net.... there are a bunch you don't have to download anything... imageshack, photobucket, imgur, tinypic, Postimage, imghost, and several others.
AND you don't even need a third party host anymore.  there is an extra two steps but if your pic is on your 'puter...
try this:

Buck Manor is doing its part here in midcoast Maine. Here's (from L to R) Ripley and Jasper. And no, they don't care for each other. Of the 2, Jasper is more likely to snuggle with me. They both like Mrs. Bucks lap. Not at the same time however.
