Evening, all! Thank Ceiling Cat for Caturday! I worked in my least favorite office (of the 12 I float between) today and the computers were down for the first 4.5 hours. Grrr. It's been around -2F windchill here all day. I saw the kid next door walking down the street wearing his heavy winter coat with the hood up and snow boots with khaki shorts. He's 11 I think he should know he's going to freeze even if his Mom didn't and she's a nurse.

Fred apparently does not like snow... I was online and noticed movement on his monitor.. he went out the pet door.. looked out the window and he rocketed out into the yard and started digging a 'spot'... and then zipped back into the utility room... few minutes later, back into the yard and more digging.. two trips later, he left yellow snow and beelined back to his bed.... and he has a litterbox in his room...  he used to lay on the blanket, now he has figured out how to get under the first layer (of four) on top of the heating pad... very unusual for a feral.. they don't like being confined..  he comes out immediately when I open the door.....

Eli begs to go out, takes one sniff of the snow, or one paw into, and retreats post haste! He is another under cover agent..and he was a feral youngster. I think warmth beats "confined" ..also mega trust..

This is Milo. He has a tooth flosser fetish. I have an annoying space between a couple of back molars that gets food jammed every time I eat. So, I've got these things stashed in the bathroom, by my computer, on my nightstand, etc. And Milo steals them and hoards them. I clean out underneath the diningroom table every so often about a half a dozen of these things at least. Weirdest cat (well, except the one that likes to lick walls).

There's nothing like being stopped in traffic, looking in your rear view mirror and seeing a Honda Ridgeline coming towards you with no driver. The guy was trying to get something off the floor and sat up just in time to see his car smash into mine. I'm fine, my car, however, is pretty crunched up.

Yeah, I'm sure I'm fine, but my car has a gaping hole in the back bumper. I'm not quite sure how an SUV bumper matched up perfectly with my Civic's bumper, but my tail lights weren't even broken. His insurance has taken responsibility, so they'll pay to get it fixed and I'll get a rental. It's just annoying and time consuming. This is the fifth accident I have been in and in everyone of them I was rear ended, so I'm getting to be a pro at this. The good thing about being rear ended is there's no question as to who was responsible. I just wish people would stop using my bumper to stop their car.

If the last round is any indication, Panda will mostly be aloof, for the first while, and warm up and let the kittens cuddle for naps just before they need to go back.  She was even surrogate nursing near the end last time.  Jack will likely be a problem, he loved having some new little tumble buddies last time but he's pretty much full grown size wise, but still kitten at heart... and probably going to be too rough...

Sickapie: Got an email last night from the superintendent of my daughter's school reminding parents to dress our kids appropriately during this cold weather.  Really?  I was going to send her today wearing her favorite gymnastics leotard, but thanks for the heads up, Captain Obvious.  Honestly.

[dl.dropboxusercontent.com image 202x249]

My nephew is a teacher in Downeast Maine. They've had a bit more snow that we have had here and used up their allotment of 'snow days'. His school doesn't get out til 6/20, as opposed to the original end date of 6/6. Not to get all 'when I was a boy' but yeah, back in the day we needed a freakin' blizzard to cancel school.

A generation of snowflakes (no pun intended) is being raised. I fear for our future (and not just for this reason).

Pneumonia is bad, yes, but at least it doesn't feel like someone is stabbing you with a ice pick every time you breathe in. Or out.  Or try not to breathe.  And Cthulhu forbid you should cough.

professional_vampire: Evening, all! Thank Ceiling Cat for Caturday! I worked in my least favorite office (of the 12 I float between) today and the computers were down for the first 4.5 hours. Grrr. Plus I haven't been feeling all that great the past couple of days - nothing serious, just feeling "off". Glad Caturday is here to see me through. Good to see everyone!

I sympathize, PV.  That "off" feeling seems to be going around here, too.  Last weekend folks everywhere seemed all cheerful and sociable.  Maybe due to the January thaw or something.  But this week has been dreadful.  Just dumping myself out of bed in the mornings has been excruciatingly hard.

I actually worked in my favorite office today - HOME - and got lots done in between my first few posts this evening and now.  This is good 'cause now I won't have to work long at the other office tomorrow.

Amazing how Caturday can motivate the soul. ^..^

You would probably not be surprised at what I've seen kids wear in weather like yours....adult supervision is not always there, unfortunately. At least they're trying.....

Oh I hear ya.  The one kid I thought of was 2 blocks away who always wears a t-shirt no matter the weather and no coat. Mom walks him to school every day.  Looks to be about 8 yrs. old.   WTF??

WTF, indeed!  That's really sad, and infuriating.  Those parents are just asking their kids to hate or at least disrespect them when they reach adolescence.  The local elementary school has coats to lend.  It's a small enough community that the school usually gets them back.

i know what you mean... the only year i remember going over was when we used our snowdays during winter, and then mother nature went bipolar the first week of may and randomly dumped half a foot of snow on us...  wouldn't have been much of an issue, but as the buses had no way to get to the rural kids, they just shut down for a day while it all melted...  otherwise the bus company would send someone out to drive the routes every morning when it snowed, and if the buses could make the routes, school was on...

Nevertheless... very punny.

John Buck 41: spinach gunk: John Buck 41: Buck Manor is doing its part here in midcoast Maine. Here's (from L to R) Ripley and Jasper. And no, they don't care for each other. Of the 2, Jasper is more likely to snuggle with me. They both like Mrs. Bucks lap. Not at the same time however.

Good to see our man in Maine is here representing!

I have a bunch of fellow Mainers (favorited in red) but other than iBette they seldom show up here in Caturday.

I have a Maine list, too.  True, we don't see many from this corner on Caturday.

But they're out there.

Lurking.

The guy was trying to get something off the floor and sat up just in time to see his car smash into mine. I'm fine, my car, however, is pretty crunched up.

How about going to help a friend jump-start her car, on I-75, in 5° weather with wind chill below 0°, and having a f'ing snowplow come up behind you at 40-50mph! He pulled up the plow blade and dodged around us at the last minute, but we were freaked out!

Whoa!  Good thing for you guys that plow driver was on the ball.

That's cool.  Probably the most information I've read about so far about the upcoming Sochi Olympics.  Usually I'm all revved up about the games by now.  I suppose I'll get there, as soon as year-end sh-stuff is done and overwith.

John Buck 41: spinach gunk: How's Buddy?

He's not too bad, thanks.  His appetite's still a bit weird, but nevertheless he's eating a healthy amount each day.  Still likes his prescription food (when he feels like eating that is).  Taking all his meds like a good boy.  Things still coming out the other end OK.  He doesn't want to do much walking these days, we only ever walk as far as the street / front garden of the building now, but there are still all kinds of people and things to sniff and bark at out there so I take him out fairly frequently for his amusement.

At night he "walks" with his nose and ears.  We go to the end of the path, stand very still, and for a few minutes we sniff/listen as far as we can to the east.  Then we turn around and do the same thing to the west.  Once we are satisfied that all the pertinent information has been gathered, we go home for a treat and a nap.

Yup.  Our school district is extremely hypersensitive when cancelling school, and they've used up all their allotted days as well.  When I was in school, it was almost never cancelled.

Hello, everybuddy! I am glad to see we've got all good news so far, with wonderdogs eating and probationary periods passing by and people not being splattered all over the highway and stuff. YAY! and Conga-rats and general happy bounces and skritches and whatnot for everyone! Also, I think Predle needs to take the "kick me" sign off her car's bumper. That happens entirely too much to you, hon. Scary! Glad you're OK and I do count that as "good news", but it still sucks.

I woulda been in last night, but I decided to try the water marble technique for my nail art and it is messy and a tad time consuming, so I had stuff all over my hands and realized too late "CATURDAY IS STARTING AND I AM PRIMPING!!!". I was very disappointed in myself and my poor timing. However, I am very proud of the results and will try to get a pic later. This is my first attempt at what I usually see labeled an "advanced" technique and while they aren't totally perfect, they are still very much AWESOME. I'll also get better at it, so after a few more runs with it, my results WILL be perfect. YAY!

For those who don't know the water marble technique, these are not my nails (mine are longer and I cleaned up my cuticles much better - I'm incredibly fussy about that sort of thing), but that's about the same V-day appropriate color scheme I went with and what it looks like when it's done.

1.bp.blogspot.com

I gotta go clean the kitchen. Someone made a mess in there while I was out yesterday and I'm tired of looking at it. Maybe I'll make myself diet treats when I'm done. I'm not so good at this "diet" thing. :-(

Let me add to the good news folks. I missed caturday last week delivering two cats from a nice lady who passed away to her grandson. I spent a couple of late evenings at her assisted living place so the cats could get used to me then drove them "up Nordt" in a four hour trip that the cats were NOT appreciative of. However, they were very happy at their new furever home, and started exploring, using litterboxs, after an hour or so. I got an email from the grandson that they seemed happy after a couple of days. Kudos to the assisted living place letting the cats stay there for a week until they could be moved out without charging rent.

YAY!!! I LOVE nice stories like that! Kudos to you and the assisted living facility for your deeds! My faith in humanity is shaky at best, and the only reason it hasn't fallen right off the cliff into the chasm of dirty looks and "gods, you all suck" is because of stuff like that. It doesn't seem like much, but it really, truly is.

You ever wonder about the people who post pics on the net, probably just to a group of folks they know, and how they react if they are just cruising around the net "la de la la la" *clicks link* and suddenly they're looking at a pic they posted, like elebenty months or years ago, except now it's somewhere completely different they'd never been to or seen before? I wonder how common that really is.

*blush*. Thanks.
In my area I have seen severe differences in upbringings and I as well have a less than stellar view on my semi-urban area for the next generation. Some are awesome, but like the 14 year old who an officer was going to ask why he was not in school that ditched a gun that went off, had an arrest record at that age as long as your arm, I am seeing more and more of that due to disconnected parents. (The extreme far end, obviously). Income does not seem the issue, just the involvement of parents.

Hector is a water kittie. I have caught him splashing around in the water bowl and the toilet bowl, not trying to drink, just stick his front paws in and splashy, splashy.

Here he is at the sink. He tries to bite the water stream, then tries to catch it and licks the water off his paws. I need to get a Drinkwell 360 (eventualy when i can afford it) instead of using a mixing bowl for water. I think both cats would love it.

I understand how people could feel about that.
It's hard to believe but the the picture below set off an argument between me and my sister at Christmas.
I was showing her the photo at my niece's house on the day, I had said I posted it on fark for something and she went nuts. "You posted that where anyone could see it?""How dare you." etc, etc.
This from the person with a facebook page full of real life info and photos. A person who's email address is their real name and has my info posted on ancestry dot com complete with name, birth date and city of birth so she could track our family history. But she was worried about this picture.

lilyspad: predle: There's nothing like being stopped in traffic, looking in your rear view mirror and seeing a Honda Ridgeline coming towards you with no driver. The guy was trying to get something off the floor and sat up just in time to see his car smash into mine. I'm fine, my car, however, is pretty crunched up.

OHNOES!!!!!! Are you sure you're okay? GAH!!!!

Yeah, what lilyspad asked!  Did you get yourself checked out at Dr Tinycat's at least?  If you end up with medical problems later (sometimes it happens), you might need to establish a paper trail to prove that you aren't just trying to cash in on an unfortunate accident.  Especially when the insurance company has decided to be a dick about paying up.

Sorry to hear of the loss of any "radio club" member, be it a ham, an am-dx'er, scanner aficionado, etc. I am thinking at this point that I am the tag generation on those. While I am nowhere close to retirement age, the local radio folks I meet with are mostly in elderly homes or well past retirement ago.

*blush*.
/rant off

I can see (and have seen) where income and education of the parents can impact the level of involvement with their kids, but you're right - it does come down to involvement. Growing up on the edge of SoCen LA I noticed very early on that kids who had no parents around - either at work all the time or 'out to lunch' for assorted reasons - tended to adopt backup family members, sometimes gangs. Other times they'd end up with families like mine who were pretty laid back, welcoming and well behaved (most of the time). It was almost always just a reaction to not having anyone else in their lives though. To think, there are entire tousanbajillion dollar studies done about that sort of thing and all they had to do is come over to my house for krumkakker and kaffe and ask "what the dealie-o, dudes?". I coulda told 'em by the time I hit jr high - if not sooner.

I should start making up back stories for some of them.

My mom is notorious for oversharing online. I follow right behind her and do "mop up" when I catch her doing it. I think at this point it's a lost cause.

"Yes, sis, I posted that kiddie pic for everyone. I'll take it down when you remove my personal information from your own virtual display of derp".

By the way, I was catching up on my spam (I like some of my spam. Probably because I like to shop - just can't afford to shop right now) and taking a break from my cleaning and got some Caturday appropriate V-day ideas! OK, just one idea and it's from Think Geek, but it's cheesy cute.

Long stem kittens! They're $50, so about the same as long stem roses and will last FUREVER. I know which one I'd prefer!

At bottom of page 3 now.  No wonder I can't get a job, Caturday keeps getting in the way!  If only I could make a living off high-larious cations...

And now, a floss.

Oh gosh, I didn't see your original post. After my last accident. (A jerk late for his dr. Appoint was doing 120 in the fast lane, pulled into the slow lane not seeing me and totaled my car) I immediately emailed the driver's (now former insurance company) with my aches and pains, followed by a trip to the doctor the next day. Please do the same.... Four years later still in the court system looking for progressive to even pay a start on my medical bills. Fortunately, MetLife, my insurance co stepped in and covered most everything. Complain about any/everything, get yourself into a doctor for any complaint, etc. in my instance I required knee surgery. I did not think it was anything but a bruise at first.
