Penfield Fire Chief Chris Ebmeyer said discussions are under way to give Tyler an honorary firefighter's funeral to recognize his heroic actions.

They should do that. They really should.

I'm with the uncle.

Mom, $50,000 can be a down payment on a house, sure, but no one trusts you.

Dad, obviously you had a great son. But Tyler was an 8 year old boy. He'd blow the $50,000 on a trip to Disneyland or something.

An outside manager making sure the fund was managed to help the survivors seems like a solid idea.

There were 6ish people in a 10'x60' trailer; I'm thinking that there was a lot money mismanagement for that situation to occur. I agree that we shouldn't just give anyone 100% control over the funds. Set up a trust in the child's name; with the third party as administrator.

Barry Lyndon's Annuity Cheque: She he died saving a bunch of assholes, maybe he's a villain instead of a hero.

The article says the mother didn't live in the trailer & wasn't there when it burned.  She also basically says she is entitled to a nice home & not a trailer.  Draw your own conclusions.

I thought it said Tyler Durden for a moment there.

Can we throw the family in the burning trailer and get the kid back?

You mean the trailer park menagerie wasn't independently wealthy?

Use [the money] the right way, on what Tyler would want it to be spent on.

$45Kon videos games and moon bounces, it is!

No matter where she ends up living she's still trailer trash.

I would have gone with the "obvious" tag, personally.

I think the world is crying out for an obvious/sick hybrid tag.

Sad this woman just lost her son and the only person she is thinking about is herself. Give the kid a great funeral and give the rest to burn survivors or the families of fallen firefighters.

2014-01-23 09:53:39 PM
They're giving it all they got, cap'n.

I was 9 once.  I have a theory as to how that fire started.

Thanks for reminding us people are awful again, Fox News.

Way to reinforce the trailer trash stereotype dumbasses!

2014-01-23 10:05:27 PM
This is like a kickstarter for the trailerpark set.  The woman who organized the collection named the mom as beneficiary.  Everyone who donated then donated to the mom.  So she has the kid cremated for a few hundred dollars and pockets the rest, where's the problem?

2014-01-23 10:12:37 PM
it makes sense for the money to go to the mother in the context of a trailer park, since its not like any of the little fellas siblings (present or future) will have the same father.

2014-01-23 10:13:15 PM
I know the gist of this story from the headlines, but it's so sad I've been avoiding reading the details.

Hopefully the Bieber stuff will push this from the news so I can get back to my my head back in the sand.

Well, at least he was able to bring honor to his family's name if only for a day.

/RIP

Yeah the court to appoint some one to manage the fund, the kids family will just squander it.

Honestly i would trust the kid to wisely choose how to spend the $50,000 than his mother.

Assuming outside managers are any more trustworthy.

I hope to read this in a follow up soon.

Why do people give money without first finding out how it will be used?  I would rather give 500$ to someone that was a victim then a "fund".

2014-01-23 10:29:10 PM
God. Maybe this kid is better off now. His family are a gaggle of assholes.

Indeed, in fact as the article quotes her: "My son just got lost in a huge tragedy," Vrooman told FoxNews.com. "Do you think I want to move into a trailer? I want a nice house [as] I have always been telling the kids, and to give my kids a great school district."

Translation:  "I just hit paydirt.  Do you think I'm gonna be stupid enough to move into a trailer now that I have the cash?"

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Don't insult geese, man. They're already vicious, hissing poop monsters. Do you think they need any more bad PR?

What should she do with it? A new house could be good for her and her remaining children. It is not like she is blowing it on a nice car or something, a house is for the family.

No kidding. Eleventy people and an ark's worth of animals in a single wide. This is not surprising.

2014-01-23 10:44:58 PM
Jesus Christ this story just got even more f*cked up.  Are they sure the kid ran back inside so he could save someone?

2014-01-23 10:45:18 PM
I dunno, man, but I'mma give the kid's old lady the benefit of the doubt. Also, they were expecting to raise $5000 for the funeral and got $50K, so it's not like they're saying the money was going to go to a burn charity to fleece a bunch of saps...

Yes, in concept that makes sense.  But the article raises some issues on the woman's ability to handle the money correctly and her comment seems to me a little bit off.

The great thing about being cynical is, this story doesn't disappoint me at all.

And also... keep in mind what the mother wants. Not a trip to Disneyland, some new boobies and a Harley. But a decent house in a good school district. Seems eminently reasonable. The relatives are concerned that she'll in fact get new boobies and a Harley. And perhaps relapse into substance abuse. Not necessarily in that order.

You can take the trash out of the trailer park, but you can't take the trailer park out of the mother.
