a particular individual: Rezurok: Steak is comprised of...

To comprise means  to consist of or  to be made up of. It is used to denote that something  is made up of smaller parts. Do not use the word  of with comprise.

Read more at  http://www.grammar-monster.com/easily_confused/comprise_compose.htm#h 6 BthyURjLsgbllO.99

"to comprise" means "to contain" (1), as in "The house comprises seven rooms." In other words, this house has or contains seven rooms. When you use "comprise," you're talking about all the parts that make up something. -

There does not exist a word or phrase in the english language that could accurately convey how little I care about whether "comprised of" is technically correct grammar.  I only replied to let you know that I would really, really like to invite you to my next party.

Anyway - when Catholics want their kids taught their religion, they have the common decency to found and run their own schools.
The damn fundies want it taught to my kids too, and on my dime.

The school also tried to reeducate the parents and was teaching creationism as well as runing biblical scripture on the schools electronic massage board out front. I'd say some one has a problem and it's not the parents of the kid.

2014-01-23 07:58:23 PM
Thinking about it, I can't recall a recent case where religion was quite so institutionalized into a public school.  I mean, there was the school that was forced to take down a picture of Jesus in the gym, or something like that, and there have been plenty of cases dealing with school prayer, and with 'teaching the controversy', but this school seems to have it all:  Mandatory prayer, the bare-faced teaching of creationism and denying of science, affirmations of Christianity on schoolwork, staff and student bullying of students regarding religion.. and it's at every level of their school system, as evidenced by the teacher, principal and superintendent refusing to address the problem--even going so far as racism, telling the parents to put their kid in a school with other Asians, as if there were no such thing as a Christian Asian.

With that kind of bigotry throughout the school system, how do you even begin to address the problem?  I just don't understand how it is possible without nuking it from orbit.  Obviously, the case is a slam dunk, and at some level in the court system, the school district will indeed receive the epic smackdown it so desperately deserves... but what then?  How do you tell an entire school district's staff so obviously filled with the spirit of the Lord that they can no longer make the religion they so love a part of their school?  More importantly, how do you ensure that they follow through, especially given that the students have already been quite indoctrinated to think that religion in school is OK, and they won't understand why suddenly everything has to change?  Students who believe that their teachers want what's best for them, and who know their teachers do NOT want religion removed from the classroom?

It's a little bit mind-boggling.

Oh, I never lived in Monroe. I lived in New Orleans and Baton Rouge. But I went to La. Tech. The only thing Monroe had going for it was Hot Shotz, the gay bar with cheap, stiff drinks served in real glasses and drag shows on Thursdays (or was it Tuesdays).

But I don't know if you understand or not. If you're from southern La. and you've never been up there, except maybe to go to Shreveport for some reason, you might not get just how farked up it is in the northern part. DarkSoulNoHope: Just make sure, when you hear the words "Christian Oppression" in the United States, remember it means to them that the Christians are not freely allowed to push their faith upon people who disagree with them. If a Christian was talking about oppression in Saudi Arabia or China, then we'd have something to talk about, but still remember what was the first thing the Christians did after the Iraq War ended? They came in there with Bibles and missionaries, intent on converting Muslims when their faith was low and their country in shambles. Christianity, just stop with the pressuring of faith upon people who don't agree with your religion and we'll stop "oppressing" you! Hell, we might even let you put up a 10 Commandments display after we put it next to a statue of the Flying Spagetti monster, Buddha, and Cthulhu.

I expect that it is evident that this woman is unfit to teach children science because a) she is a bully; b) she is a bigot; c) she is ignorant of the material she should be teaching; and d) she is violating the separation of church and state by using the bully pulpit of a third rate state school to impose her warped version of Christianity on non-Christians in violation of freedom of religion, etc.

But anybody could see that, so allow me to explain why chimpanzees are not evolving into humans, although there is no real evidence that they aren't seeing as evolution usually takes so much time you can't see it in action, like the brain of Southern Baptist.

I will answer this supposedly knock-down argument in terms that a small child will be able to understand.

Let us begin.

This is my hand. See my hand. My hand has four fingers and a thumb. There are four kinds of chimpanzees, the animal most like Man. There is one kind of human, namely man. Let each of my four fingers be a kind or species of chimpanzee. Let my thumb be man.

As you can see my fingers do not grow out of my thumb. They are opposed. They are joined in my hand.

Let the palm of my hand be the common ancestor of chimpanzees and man. It is not around any more. You can't see it, but it existed several million years ago. We have plenty of fossils of other types of men and ape to prove that this is how it was millions of years ago. We know it must exist even if we can't find it, even if it is currently a missing link, because the acidic soil of forest floors don't allow bones to lie around and because many animals such as ants and mice eat bones for their calcium and mineral content. We know it is missing, which is the same as knowing it must have existed, because there were no humans millions of years ago, but every living thing has two parents, four grandparents, eight great-grandparents, and so forth, barring incest. Our family trees go back to pre-humans and keep on going to apes and then monkeys and so forth, or rather, not to apes, but common ancestors like apes and like humans, not to monkeys but to common ancestors of apes and monkeys, and so forth.

You can represent and see all of these family trees in the shape of my hand. We still have humans, apes, monkeys and lemurs. We still have cats and dogs, horses and zebras, Indian and African elephants. But we don't have their common ancestors any more because their descendants, of howsoever many species there might be, replaced them as you and your parents have replaced your distant ancestors all the way back past whatever missing links bear the names of Adam and Eve.

Because they are missing, aren't they? We don't have Adam, Eve, the apple, the tree, the Garden, or even the snake with legs. If God made any of these, they have disappeared. But the fossil record has not disappeared, so scientists have evidence where theologians have only words, words, words called "evidences" despite not being very easy to understand or very convincing to those of us who believe other crackpot myths and fairy tales.

So chimpanzees and man are evolved from a common ancestor, as my fingers and thumb grow out of my hand.

But could chimpanzees evolve into man? Should they? Should we be able to see this happen before our eyes in the lifespan of one person or even many generations or even ten or twelve thousand years?

No. Evolution is slow. It seldom repeats itself unless there is something to be gained. And, of course, the only way evolving into humans could happen is if chimps were better humans than humans are. Because if you are competing against humans in a being human contest you are bound to lose.

So you will never see a chimpanzee give birth to a human baby. They just can't pull that kind of Poof! miracle off. There is little advantage for chimps to be humans even if they could. There are seven billion of us. There are so many of us that there's no point for chimps to try to compete by being us. It would be impossible to win that fight. On the other hand, there are so many dumb humans that humans could, if they found any advantage in being dumb, evolve into dumber and dumber humans until we had to consider them fundamentally a different kind of human, or even a different kind of ape.

Thank you for your contribution to the devolution of dumb kids into fundamentalists. A few million years stands between you and the kind of progress that is described in Galapagos by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. or in the Origin of the Species by Charles Darwin.

Unfortunately evolution just does not work the way you think it does and you shouldn't be teaching children outside of a Sunday School, where the dumber kids will embarass you with questions you can not answer, while the smarter kids will be good little Christians and just roll their eyes behind your back.

If you prefer, you can skip the text in italics without losing the science, and only most of the snark. But I know how Farkers love snark, so I chose to leave it in.

Wow, what a coont. And I thought MY high school was bad...I remember once when I was carrying my D&D books in my backpack to play after school, and when my German teacher spotted them, she flat out told me I would go to Hell unless I burned them and repented. Another time, there was a mandatory assembly with two churchies who basically told everyone the same thing; they were like a hilarious living Chick tract.

I used to have religious debates with my psych teacher after class (they were always stimulating and mutually respectful, then she brought in a guest speaker who told the class not to believe anything they said in Sex Ed, because they were just trying to trick us into having sex and getting AIDS.

Of course, in our district at the time, "Americanism vs. Communism" was a required class.

kazrak: Ctrl-Alt-Del: Why am I not the least bit surprised by this? I swear to god, the only people more aggressively stupid than HOA members are fundamentalist school board members,

The difference being that fundamentalists on the school board are clueless enough to document that they're doing things for religious reasons. (See also: the guy in Dover, PA who justified teaching intelligent design because "2000 years ago, somebody died on a cross. Can't somebody take a stand for him?")

My understanding is that HOA boards are usually more circumspect, if no less vile.

Remember, a lot of Fundamentalists, especially deep in the Bible Belt, sincerely, genuinely believe that it's perfectly legal to do that, since (as I heard it quoted to me) "Separation of church and state is mentioned nowhere in the Constitution".  They sincerely believe that the US is a "Christian state" founded by Christians and it's "liberal" propaganda/lies that you can't force people to worship Jesus or require people to be Christian to be a citizen or vote or hold office.

They basically think that the US is supposed to be a Christian theocracy and was until the last few decades, and it's only godless "liberal" treachery that began sometime in the 60's (or thereabouts) that's preventing that.

No, I'm not joking.

I had a physical science teacher in high school open every class with a prayer and a bible quote. He had a bumper sticker stuck to the bulletin board that said "The Big Bang Theory: God spoke and BANG! it happened!" This, of course, meant that any teaching didn't start properly until about twenty minutes into the class and shiat was generally a massive clusterfark.
I went to the school administration to mention it and was met with "What's wrong with a bit of prayer? What are you, atheist or something?"

After that I raised enough of a stink that the teacher got in trouble and made it a point to tell us all about how one disrespectful killjoy ruined it for the entire class by getting offended by some "good ol' Christian values".

So in your tiny little mind you believe an atheist would live their public life as a devout fundamental christian in Louisiana, just to generate backlash for christians?  That's the explanation you're going with?  Seriously?  Are you trolling, or just indescribably stupid?

You obviously have no idea the lengths to which some people will go to achieve their world vision.

Also this.
