They're not a bad news source, really.  I've heard it said that their Arabic language news is a VASTLY different animal, but I don't speak Arabic so I wouldn't know that first hand.

+1 nekom

When traveling in Europe, I found their English coverage to be the most evenly balanced newscast I'd seen in about 10+ years.

2014-01-23 05:05:09 PM
I'm liking them more and more for not manufacturing news.                              |

AJE is actually quite good. That's why they're not going to report non-stories packaged for idiots.

2014-01-23 05:05:30 PM
Nice try, Al Jazeera, but you're not going to fool me.

One minute it's responsible journalism and then BAM Sharia law.

2014-01-23 05:05:45 PM
Difficult to believe a news channel in this day and age would bypass hard news like Bieber's arrest for fluff like peace talks.

As I type this at 5pm on Thurs 23 Jan, guess which story CNN is leading with?  Can you belieb it?

I follow them on Twitter and their editorial pieces have a strong anti-western slant, but actual news reporting seems pretty balanced.

Al-Jazeera and BBC news are the only news stations with any kind of respectability. I'm not saying they're completely unbiased, but in comparison to domestic American news outlets, they're the best there currently is in the world.

I saw their Fault Lines special on the infant mortality rate in Ohio (particularly Cleveland) that's comparable to Sri Lanka. Seeing American politicians walk out on this british guy who was asking extremely basic questions about the topic was extremely nauseating.

2014-01-23 05:07:56 PM
the only news I want to hear about him is his death from drug overdose.  I expect that to be next week's story.

2014-01-23 05:08:31 PM
So Al Jazeera = HBO's The Newsroom, only not as preachy?

2014-01-23 05:08:58 PM
I'm not watching Al Jazeera. I don't want to become mooslim

2014-01-23 05:10:05 PM
I'm still waiting for At&t to add it to their lineup. At least we have CNN International for the time being.

2014-01-23 05:11:09 PM
I actually like Al Jazeera. It used to more or less be the voice box for Islamists, anymore though it's alot more like BBC News but more graphic.

I agree, but then that's what editorial pieces are for.  Their actual news seems on par with the BBC, which is another one I check daily.  A damned site better than faux's BS, CNN's incompetence or MSNBC's horrible layout that makes me want to swing a cactus.

Turned on CNN this morning. They were talking about this tool. I then changed it to Al Jazeera.

CNN, it's not news, it's hollywood reporting.

It's nice to see respectable outlets such as Al Jazeera America and Glen Beck not reporting this non-story.

This.

I was very pleased when my otherwise shiatty cable company picked up both channels. CNN international would be nice too, but two out of three ain't bad.

The Iranian Prime Minister is speaking at Davros? Does the Doctor know?

Al Jazeera America has not covered the pop star's arrest aside from a brief mention in the 8amET hour.

LOL except that they did
What a great article

The Iranian Prime Minister is the 15th incarnation of the doctor. You haven't seen his sonic screwdriver yet?

Now I'm in the position of (briefly) approving of Glenn Beck's approach to the news. It's very confusing for me.

I was so embarrassed for Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC around the noon hour today when she was interviewing a former congresswoman (who looked a lot like Jane Lynch, by the way) regarding the NSA and she had to dramatically break in with the news about ... Justin Bieber being booked for speeding in Miami!!! OMG!!!

It's OK, Ms. Mitchell, I know YOU personally don't make those decisions.

FTA:  Glenn Beck's TheBlaze has also declared itself a Bieber-free zone.

I know he's more politics than anything, but between this and his earlier apologies and attempts to remake his image...it's like...he's trying to...become something good?

I've been watching NHK a lot lately. Mostly for Mai Shoji but it's interesting to watch the news from a Japanese perspective.

I remember a story on AJE.  It was something about Israeli settelments in the West Bank.  The over all tone of the story didn't have the Jew hate I was expecting,  and seemed to have a slight bias in favor of the Jews.   I wonder what the Al Jezera Arabic verion of the story was like.
I'll expect AJE to become more like AJA once they establish a toe hold here.

If you declare yourself a Bieber-free zone, then you are not Bieber-free. They have a front-page link: "Poll: Do you even want us to do a Justin Bieber arrest story?"

Which leads to a Justin Bieber arrest story.

Unless you have kids who are fans of this guy's music, why does any adult over the age of 30 care what happening to this guy?

I've never read one story about him and I barely know who the guy is - he's like a teen idol pop singer, right?

Yes, i know I sound smug (like someone who declares they never watch movies or don't own a TV)... but c'mon why does the media seem to follow this guy so much?

I don't know if that would go over well.  Even if it did, I'd still check them.  It never hurts to have a different perspective on things, even if... no ESPECIALLY if you don't agree with it.  Especially when it comes to stories in their backyard.  When Egypt was rioting, it was very interesting to hear what Egyptians thought of it all.

This might come as a surprise to you, but you don't sound smug. You sound old. The 'kids' of today who are/were fans of Justin Bieber's music are reaching the age where they're going to become a relevant demographic for news reporting.

His debut album was in 2010. Since the fan demographic was somewhere around 13-16, this is 4 years later when they're graduating High School and going to College and becoming part of the grown-up world.

And as grown-ups we're always getting news reports and editorials on stuff that was relevant when we were kids.

Now I feel old.

I don't think so.

this is going to sound like a joke, or an attack, but it's sincere and comes from a place of concern :

I believe Glenn Beck is mentally ill and needs help.

Perhaps Al-Jazeera Arabic is.

Baby Bush railed against AJ, back in the day, didn't he? Before the launch of AJE, perhaps?

anymore These days, though it's alot more like closer to BBC News but more graphic.

FTF English speakers.

/Although I'm not certain what you mean by "more graphic".
//I mean, I'm generally in favour of the evolution of the English language, but Bob the Angry Flower does make a compelling point, IYSWIM.
