minuslars: And people whine about snow days wussifying America.

Yeah. Snow days are snow days because sometimes they are actually dangerous. Up north, at least. (It takes quite a bit of snow and/or ice and/or extreme cold for people to call a snow day.)

Back in the day I left my electronics box on a train. I forgot it and went to lost and found at the next station. It had a breadboard with a 555 timer and LEDs. Binary counter project. They just handed it to me. Circa 85. People were not so paranoid then.

Pipe cleaners do not a pipe bomb make.

caddisfly: "This incident serves as a strong reminder for the public to remain alert for unattended packages or suspicious activity," Skinner said. "Any unattended packages should be left alone and not moved by members of the public."

No, this incident serves as a reminder that the odds of something left on a bus or train actually being an explosive device is infinitesimal, and that continued paranoia and overreaction by the public and officials makes us all look silly.

Making people in the US afraid of everything wasn't caused by terrorism.

You guys did that to yourselves.

Gyrfalcon: Ctrl-Alt-Del: Inside the shoebox was a small black box with wheels attached to the side and taped on top was a straw with a balloon attached to an end... "The (NJ Transit) employee peeked inside the shoebox, saw pipe cleaners and the black box," Skinner said. "Without looking closely he felt it could have been a bomb."

What kind of training do these people GET?!?!?

OK, nevermind. Forget I asked.

If he was already opening the box, and it didn't explode, he should have taken a good look. Obviously that was safe and the few extra seconds spent verifying the contents weren't like to kill anyone. None of this bullshiat would have happened then.

Then and now.

Now gets you arrested for wearing this

Yeah,  it's a proto-board with blinking LEDs.  Maybe it uses a 555, but these days a cheap PIC would be simpler.  Or even those LEDs with built in blinking.
