A picture of the object would help us properly mock anyone who thought it was a bomb.

a student's science project that had been mistakenly left on the train...

a small black box with wheels attached to the side and taped on top was a straw with a balloon attached to an end.

If someone blows the balloon up, the vehicle should be propelled along a flat surface.

"This incident serves as a strong reminder for the public to remain alert for unattended packages or suspicious activity," Skinner said. "Any unattended packages should be left alone and not moved by members of the public."

No, this incident serves as a reminder that the odds of something left on a bus or train actually being an explosive device is infinitesimal, and that continued paranoia and overreaction by the public and officials makes us all look silly.

On my NJ Transit train they remind you about leaving packages at least twice a trip.
At Penn station in NYC, for the Acela trains they take bomb sniffing dogs on a lot of the trains.

I should rephrase: has any package that has been found in plain view (and subsequently destroyed by police) ever been a bomb?

The NJ authorities were prepared to blow up the train station and the surrounding town as a precautionary measure for everyone's protection. Seeing as the entire event was a complete
waste of time, the police shot three random people for good measure.

I used to work at a small private university in the boonies of western NY, and one day one of the professors, who lived in the town, said something along the lines of 'yes, I am scared terrorists will attack in this town'. I had a very difficult time not laughing in his face.

This came from a physics professor, by the way; you'd think he'd have a little more sense... Then again, they have such a hard time finding top notch professors...

And they say terrorism hasn't won.

Silly me, I thought terror was only a means to an end. I guess Al Qaida's goals had nothing to do with Israel, and everything to do with inconveniencing railroad passengers.

Al-Qaeda's goals didn't have anything to do with Israel.

They did have everything to do with convincing other Muslims that they could strike at the heart even of America with impunity. You need to take a step back from the talking points and expand your world view a little bit.

Well, the 1996 Olympic Park bomb was found by a police officer, Richard Jewell, in a backpack that was in plain sight, under a bench, 13 minutes before it went off.  Bomb Squad was on it way, and I'd assume they would have dealt with it.

/Jewell was part-timing it as a Security Guard at the time of the incident.

My point is that it's retarded to say that "the terrorists have won" every time someone overreacts to something that could have possibly been a bomb. Terror is just a means to an end.
