Glenn Beck is still upset that he found out the world does not revolve around him.

/We would have imprisoned Galileo if he raped and killed a young girl in 1990.

If only there was some place kids could learn about Creationism apart from trying to shoehorn it into science curriculum.

Again, Beck and his ilk need to be more specific.  They want CHRISTIAN creation stories to be taught along side science.  If schoolboards said OK to teaching the Islamic creation myth, I'm pretty sure Beck would be blubbering tears yet again.

I'm not sure it would make much of a difference in the rural Oklahoma school I attended, it's not like very many of the kids were paying attention.

Dear Mr. Galilei,
you really should not have called the Pope a simpleton in your book. Insulting the Holy Father that way is the entire reason you were put on trial, and not because of your scientific beliefs. Heliocentrism vs Geocentrism was just an excuse to put you on trial, chastise you, ban your work Dialogue and commit you to house arrest.

You should in fact be thanking for the Holy Father for your arrest and confinement, because it allowed you to focus on what became your greatest work the book Two New Sciences.

Don't make us dig you up and excommunicate you.

The Holy Father.

While creationism isn't science, there is nothing that has "disproven" the concept of a creator. Sure, the Bible is a big storybook, but nothing has proven that god doesn't exist, and that he didn't create everything.

When creationism shows me how to observe, push, prod, and dissect these creators and how I might replicate their results, then it will be a theory worth teaching. Otherwise that hypothesis has no place in a child's starter biology course.

Glen Beck?  Not even going to read the link.  Instead I'm going to copypasta something I posted in a earlier thread about Creationism:

--- --- ---

You know, I think Creationism should be taught in the Science class.

It should be taught that Creationism is WRONG. And the best way to do that is to use SCIENCE!!!

Geology, Biology, Chemistry, Physics... all the other scientific disciplines have PROVEN that the world is more than 6000 years old, and that Dinosaurs did not co-habit with humans, and all the other things in the Biblical story of creation or any other creation "myth" is just that: a story. And the reason Creationism persists to this day and age is that there are people out there that are just not smart enough or well-informed enough to understand how the world was created, how life originated and evolved and how everything else works in the universe. It is just easier for them to say "God did it".

The problem exists between Belief and Delusion. Believing in something is the first step towards proving it. History is full of people who believed something that was controversial, unpopular, and went against the common way of thinking, and then went out and proved their belief was right! Mind you of course a lot of them were killed for their efforts, but even their deaths were not enough to overturn the proof they uncovered that their beliefs led them to. Now there were a lot of people that believed in a lot of dumb shiat, and eventually they were proven WRONG, by their own efforts or though the efforts of others. Yet some people continued to believe this dumb shiat even after being presented with the proof that it was dumb shiat. This is when belief turns into delusion and this is where the atrocities begin.

Facts support Proof which them supports your Belief, but Opinion has always been the support of outright BS, and opinions can be based on absolutely nothing. Creationism has always been just someone's Opinion on how the world was made, and the hardest thing to fight is the mentality that Opinion is just as good as Fact.

What needs to be done is to constantly point out that these people that push Creationism are DELUDED. Constantly. Consistently. They need to be removed from any position of power or influence just by this fact. It is not religious persecution, it is just that we don't want crazy people making decisions about our lives! We used to lock up crazy people for our own protection as well as theirs -- maybe we should start doing it again. We can use those FEMA camps they are always raving about.

The survival of the human race is at stake. We need to stop wrecking this planet we live on, we need to get off this planet and explore the universe so one stray asteroid doesn't wipe us out. Science is what will do it, and unless gets off their ass and starts biatchslapping these retards every time they try to force their delusions on our kids instead of teaching out kids to learn and think, we are going to all end up dead. And the baby Jesus isn't going to come save us.

--- --- ---

There was also something about burying Kittypie070 under a mountain of industrial-strength catnip-laced squeaky toys before she went on a murderous rampage from the stupidity in that thread, but if you knucklehead don't go off the rails in this one, I think we well all be safe.

ESPECIALLY since it was subjective to begin with. It's not reasonable to assume that a hand span (distance from thumb to pinky with fingers outstretched) is going to be the same for all adult men.
It does allow for everything made with the same set of instructions to be the same proportions. But obviously not the same size. I'd wager it's possible that Goliath's cubit was twice as big as David's cubit.
On the one hand it's a stupid system, on the other *IF* it was the first try by a civilization to standardize a means of measurement I guess it's not so bad, given it's intuitiveness.

Also. I whole-heartedly agree... math rules!

Fart_Machine: If only there was some place kids could learn about Creationism apart from trying to shoehorn it into science curriculum.

I brought that up to an Evangelical Fundamentalist once. She said they need to do it in schools because a lot of kids are not taught the right thing in their homes, and a lot of people don't go to church or the right kind of church. If their were ever any doubt that this was about anything other than the minority pushing their religion on the majority, that conversation cleared it all up for me.

I think the reason the "fundies" have been able to get away with this in the more than 80 years since the Scopes trial and the more than a quarter century since Edwards v. Aguillard is that the argument has been posed as one of science and atheism versus theism. Since most Americans are at least nominally theists, they have seen this as an argument where science has lined up with atheism against them. In fact, of the Christians in America, <a data-cke-saved-href="http://educationfrontlines.net/newspaper/0221.htm l" >"89.6%="" belong="" to="" churches="" that="" support="" evolution="" education."="" here's="" another=""

But, the number of Americans who say they believe in the Biblical account of creation is increasing, even as it goes against what most of their Churches support. The "fundies" have been waging a very successful stealth war against other religions in America by simply pretending that their real enemy is atheism. Ever notice how when Creationist debate evolution, they never debate someone like Sister Paula Gonzalez, PhD? It's always an atheist, and it's always an atheist who is openly scornful of anyone who believes in God in any form. This has resulted in a few, tiny, extreme sects of nearly cult-like status are using American schools and American tax dollars to subvert the religions of the majority. And it needs to stop.
