Life is sacred. Which is why we're going to grow this hydrocephalic fetus in a corpse. YEEEEE-HAAWWW

At least this is consistent with the anti-abortionists' view about what women are good for.

Brain dead in Texas? How could they tell?

Clearly this isn't a big deal because a woman over-simplified her life story and furthermore.

Challenge the legislator who sponsored the law to adopt the infant. Make it a very public campaign.

It's a backwards hellhole run by pious morons. If you're unaware of that and living there, the rest of us can't really help you when shiat like this goes down.

In fairness, this kid is forever immune from middle school "your mom" jokes.

Rural and small-town Texas is a conservative backwater, but Houston, San Antonio, El Paso and especially Austin are pretty liberal. We're slowly making things better.

I'll admit, I thought keeping a corpse on life support in order to grow an Eraserhead baby against a woman's own wishes and the wishes of her husband and parents was beyond even Texas. That'll learn me, I suppose.

Its a perfect combo of the only two types of people conservatives care about, the unborn and the vegetative.

2014-01-23 01:33:55 PM
This may seem cold, but if she is, in fact, brain-dead, I don't necessarily see the problem.  If there's really zero brain function, she's not aware, she's not in pain, she's not anything.  I take issue with doing it over the family's objections, but it's not as though they're doing any harm by keeping her body functioning as an incubation chamber.  The law is completely nuts, but this isn't necessarily the worst-case scenario.

/Unless I misunderstand the definition of "brain death," which is entirely possible.

jesus christ.  There aren't enough sad things I can say about that.  How awful for the family.

You should do some research on Margaret Sanger, with special emphasis on the word "eugenics", before you mouth off about Pro-Life.

This here case is an aberration.  A legal conundrum.  But they really should have allowed this woman's family to do what they thought was best for their own flesh and blood.

The problem is not about abortion, dude.  It's about government intrusion and inherent mistrust of its citizenry.

FTA: ""Quite sadly, this information is not surprising due to the fact that the fetus, after being deprived of oxygen for an indeterminate length of time, is gestating within a dead and deteriorating body, as a horrified family looks on in absolute anguish, distress and sadness," the attorneys said. "

Does that help?

It made me smile.

I'm not a doctor, but it doesn't exactly sound like this fetus is going to be viable.  I have a feeling that in the end, nature will sort this all out.  But yeah, this is stupid and sad.

Last Man on Earth: but it's not as though they're doing any harm by keeping her body functioning as an incubation chamber.

The hospital is dedicating thousands of dollars worth of resources every day to do something that nobody except the State of Texas wants. Now, this being Texas, we'll leave aside the fact that that's resources that could go to caring for actual living people instead of a dead body, since it's a matter of policy there to not give people medical care unless they wear top hats and spats. In addition to that, though, they're working as hard as they can to bring a f*cked-up kid into the world who is not wanted by anybody who, if it even lives, will experience pretty much nothing but pain and misery for the duration of its truncated life.

There's also that whole "women are best used as baby-making chambers regardless of what they would like" thing going on, but, again, Texas.

This is not, by any stretch of the imagination, harmless.

I know all about Sanger, and the "Pro-Life" movement is still disgusting. This is what their policies look like in practice.

If she signed a valid DNR, it's also over her own objections. And you can't just gloss over the family's wishes or their suffering. That is pretty much the point here.

Ruggedly Independent Texas will be the first state to legalize the forced harvesting of human organs for resale.

It's like a Christian ressurection, only more profitable.

You should look into rural vs. urban rates of unemployment and use of "entitlements."

Can't Texas find the woman guilty of some crime (such as being a woman) and execute her?

I realize that the fetus is absolutely sacred until it's born but maybe after birth they can execute it, too? I mean, it might be gay one day.

Isn't that how they think?

I'd imagine all this is very expensive.
