Normally I'm all about songs that slam country music. But to listen to this one would also mean listening to country music.

Wee bit of a dilemma.

The gal's song is good. And true. Country music today is pretty much broken...heck, when a "country star" is from Australia (I'm talking to you, Keith Urban) something is definitely wrong. I'm not sure when this all started but, for me, it was Shania Twain who began this crap.

Blech. Made it through about 10 second of this lame "song," because I was falling asleep. Reminded me of Muzak but with a voice.

Seems to me that most of the country music that I've listened to in the past was about trucks and beer, along with cheating, honky-tonking, and illicit affairs.  Seems to me that she's singing more about the decline of folk music.

Good singing though!

Been discussed in many ways . . . music industry is the antithesis of music.

The first that comes to mind: Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" album.

That said, nice voice, and a little bit of irony. She complains about language, then uses "crap" in her lyrics - hmm.

Her music is nice, her lyrics are a little light (give her some years), and her chorus is to the point.

Hope she'll go far - shine on you crazy diamond.

So do what every other genre of music does.  Start your own record labels and release the music you want to.

Mainstream media and major labels are never going to change.

True dat. I admire your taste in music.

There's plenty of pop country in Nashville. Oh you don't like pop country? Then truly the best course of action is to whine about there being no country music in Nashville instead of going to wherever the fark you think there is real country music.

Coincidentally, if you're a fan of country music you can also get it from places other than Nashville, you don't need to cry about the music out of Nashville not meeting your standards.

MelGoesOnTour: heck, when a "country star" is from Australia

Yeah, because its not like Australia has a huge rural community facing the challenging and hands-on work of agriculture. Nope, people who get on their horses and drive cattle for months across a mostly empty land to graze them/water them. No one knows how to sheer a sheep in Australia. No one's faced the problem of their entire crop destroyed by either drought or flood for the third year in a row in Australia. Its not like the major party that's in control of the government is formed by a coalition of the rural/farming party and the conservative party. Yeah... no country roots in Australia.

Correct. Australia has nothing to do with the American South which is from where "country music" hails. Likewise, even though I can sing and wax poetically about traditional German music, it would be weird if I tried to pass myself off as a German being how I'm not.  But, yeah, there are plenty of faker's to go around.

Country music is great, fantastic music that relates to the problems of the common person, and this is not what is coming out of Nashville.

What is coming out of Nashville are beer, whiskey and truck commercials.  Its everything conservatives complained about rap, but is okay because steel guitar replaced the drum machines.

Found it - she's really good.

2014-01-23 05:07:13 PM
The point being that its called 'country' music, not American music. A lot of the imagery and challenges country music sings about is an important part of Australian culture as well. Are you trying to suggest that rural Australians shouldn't be allowed to sing about their trucks, farms, and horses because their trucks, farms, and horses are on the wrong continent? Maybe we should stop all of those urban English rappers rapping about the challenges of poverty and discrimination in the city because they aren't from America. Better make sure those 'fake' classical composers from America don't get any recognition since they aren't from Europe.

I've been saying this for years. She says it much more eloquently and musically than I could. My buddy and his wife left Nashville because it was all about Pop Music with a Twang, not country anymore.

20 years from now, people who grew up on and love today's country music will say "This isn't country music."  It's been like that since the day the genre was invented.  That's the trouble with a lot of music fans.  They always want to hear the same old stuff, always remaining stale and never changing.

I've actually sat and thought about this... modern pop country is the easiest music to fake. Change up one guitar and create a crappy southern drawl, and you have a shot by simply playing bad rock music from a couple decades ago.

2014-01-23 11:49:36 PM
And, seriously, pop country is an abortion.

A German country-music band. And they are really good too. Better than a lot of American ones tbh.

I agree with her sentiments, sure... but it'd be nice if she could have done it using a country song instead of that acoustic folk-rock ballad

It is like saying you have to be from the U.s to sing the blues. Country and the blues aren't about where you are from, it is about your feelings and experiences.
