dletter: I guess so... when you are talking that your religion isn't the absolute truth, you might as well be Unitarians.

/coming from a non-church going Unitarian

He's not saying Catholicism isn't the absolute truth, he's saying Catholics alone may not have the absolute truth.  There's a difference.  I think he just would argue we view that truth through different lenses, and sometimes we twist it because we are flawed beings.

Cortez the Killer: So the Pope is an agnostic theist. I'd say that's better than a gnostic of any stripe.

/agnostic atheist

I have a suspicion that most senior members of any religion are probably agnostic tending towards atheist and this goes doubly for the catholic church.  It just seems that advancement would be easier for the cynical or someone willing to accept compromise in the name of the greater good.  A truly devout person would likely create friction at some point or another during their career by interpreting dogma in a manner that is not politically expedient and they are unlikely to revise their views in favor of further advancement whereas an agnostic or atheist would be used to a little bit of window dressing in the name of advancement.

Also as a side note I've found that on average Catholics at less likely to claim absolute truth than many other faiths.  Their church been around for a long time and survived huge changes over it's lifespan.  They are accustomed to re-evaluating their beliefs.
