In comments that will likely rile the more conservative wing of the church, Francis suggested that in engaging in that dialogue, Catholics shouldn't be arrogant in insisting that they alone possess the truth.

So, when does Ashton Kutcher finally pull off the Pope mask?

Ashton Kutcher couldn't pull that off with a straight face. There's something big going on here.

I guess so... when you are talking that your religion isn't the absolute truth, you might as well be Unitarians.

Proof that god loves to watch. Garden of Eden was all about voyerism, that's why Eve getting aware of her being naked pissed off the old pervert.

So the Pope is an agnostic theist. I'd say that's better than a gnostic of any stripe.

/agnostic atheist

He's not saying Catholicism isn't the absolute truth, he's saying Catholics alone may not have the absolute truth.  There's a difference.  I think he just would argue we view that truth through different lenses, and sometimes we twist it because we are flawed beings.

Well, at least he used the right Al Gore rhythms to come to that conclusion.I'll just wait over here.

"Catholics shouldn't claim absolute truth" is an interesting statement from Mr. Ex Cathedra.

Maybe this Pope realized religion was a joke years ago and he is trying to pave the way for the Church to go from "Worshiping an invisible sky wizard " to "A group of philosophers that help teach people how to get along in the world".

To be fair, god invented sex and boobies so porn is just another way to spread his "good works"

That's only a slightly bigger step than forgiving daVinci for being right. That only took, what 350 years?

I have a suspicion that most senior members of any religion are probably agnostic tending towards atheist and this goes doubly for the catholic church.  It just seems that advancement would be easier for the cynical or someone willing to accept compromise in the name of the greater good.  A truly devout person would likely create friction at some point or another during their career by interpreting dogma in a manner that is not politically expedient and they are unlikely to revise their views in favor of further advancement whereas an agnostic or atheist would be used to a little bit of window dressing in the name of advancement.

Also as a side note I've found that on average Catholics at less likely to claim absolute truth than many other faiths.  Their church been around for a long time and survived huge changes over it's lifespan.  They are accustomed to re-evaluating their beliefs.

He might also just be saying don't be arrogant about it.

There's definitely a large bit of that in their too.  This Pope's overall message seems to be "Don't be pompous asses".

I agree with your take on Catholicism, for the most part. I should have also stated that I am a former Catholic...I got better.

The article's headline misquotes him. From the article:

"In comments that will likely rile the more conservative wing of the church, Francis suggested that in engaging in that dialogue, Catholics shouldn't be arrogant in insisting that they alone possess the truth."

So what he said was "Catholics alone possess the truth, but guys, don't be dicks about it when talking to other people of other faiths."

Pretty much, I'm not denying that, it is a semi-joking term I use.... although saying it that way does sound a little better when it conversation with some people in Indiana.   And, it is kind of where I am at.... my wife doesn't push us to go to church regularly, but, if she was going to, it is known that Unitarian would be the only choice.

/and since the only Unitarian church in town is about 15-20 minutes from our house, not likely to happen.
