I've jumped out of any number of perfectly good planes. But the Grand Canyon Skywalk? That's just friction' wet-your-pants stupid. The Sundial Bridge in Redding is almost tolerable, especially at night when it's light up. But the Grand Canyon Skywalk? It's worse than the EdgeWalk in Toronto. I've learned I have limits.

I read something at a FARK link or somewhere earlier this week or last week. It was a piece written by a pilot who mentioned that many if not most pilots are afraid of heights.

That struck me as odd, though I admit, I love to fly (SEL with glider add on), and I am mostly afraid of heights.

Is there any reason to think that more pilots on average are afraid of heights than the population at large?

The Grand Canyon Skywalk is perfectly safe and the view is incredible. That being said, it's also rediculously expensive and forget about taking your own pictures of it as they want to scam you out of $30/picture from their "photographers".

little big man: Big wall climbers beg to differ - stand in a pair of etriers day after day and a portaledge seems safe by comparison:

I beg to differ because climbers aren't afraid of heights.  Someone standing in a pile of garter snakes is 100% safe.  But, if that person is afraid of snakes, to them it's like a 100 loaded guns pointed at their head.  Much more terrifying than something you do day after day as you say.

RoyBatty: I  read something at a FARK link or somewhere earlier this week or last week. It was a piece written by a pilot who mentioned that many if not most pilots are afraid of heights.

Former high school teacher of mine was an acrobatic pilot who was terrified of heights. She explained it as a control thing; if she's at the controls, she knows when she's going to "fall." Much different than being on a platform that could fail at any moment. You also generally only see the horizon in front of you, and don't look straight down.

I've only been on the roller coaster on the Stratosphere and all I have to say is it's a bunch of meh.  The inside observation deck with no railing by the curved glass has a more sphincter clenching experience than the roller coaster.

when I was 14, spent a couple weeks at a friends house in Midland, Tx. The older kid was in to ham radios a lot, and his Dad installed a 140' tower in the backyard for him. His Mom said no, but late one night, her used some 12-2 electrical wire as a safety line, and I climeb it, not looking down until I reached the top. The house looked really small from up there. t breakfast, he told his Mom, and boy was she mad.

None of those would bother me, but standing on a perfectly sound bridge as flash flooding water passes under it scares the crap out of me. Something about the water. I had a similar problem with a lake in Michigan. I'm used to lakes in Arizona, being that they're just dammed up canyons and there is always higher ground, but that lake looked and felt like it was at the same elevation as the ground I was standing on and could drift my way at any moment. It was a strange experience, I might have been on something.

Anyway. Weirdest experience. Thanks to the magic of adrenaline, I went from drunk to sober in the 30 seconds the ride took. Or felt sober, at least.

Work in Chicago, finally got around to the skydeck recently playing tour guide for some out of town friends. I've been sky diving, done bungee a dozen times, even the terminal velocity back when Wis. Dells had that going.

I completely get the engineering involved, mentally I knew it was perfectly safe, watched a group of grade school kids jumping up and down in the cube and bang on the windows. I still had a hell of a tough time walking out over Wacker Drive and looking down. You can see how thick the glass is, and yet my brain kept screaming at me to get off the thing.

Have done many climbs in the Red River Gorge area of KY.  Lots of 100'+ climbs (5.6-513/14), but little in the way of sweeping views that might cause vertigo/dizziness.

CSB:  I was doing a 150', 2-pitch climb on Seneca Rock in W. Va. when a W.Va. Air National Guard fighter came rumbling up the valley floor at about 300'.  I was standing on a 1' ledge, clipped into some 50+ year-old pitons left by WWII soldiers who trained on those rocks.  I was belaying my partner to the top when it passed several hundred feet below me.  I watched it go by, and then completely freaked out.  Took me about 10 minutes to get over the exposure and complete the climb to the top.  Something in my head said there was something SO wrong about watching a jet pass under you while in flight.

One of the few things I will absolutely not even consider doing, being a longtime kayaker/rafter I have way too much earned respect for the power of moving water for my mind to allow that to happen. The heights don't bother me, heck I flipped over the bar at the top of niagara falls, but the idea of being that close to moving water near an edge like that just freaks me out.
