NOPE

I had enough trouble with the transparent landing at MOMA in SF. And that's only three floors up.

I've jumped out of any number of perfectly good planes. But the Grand Canyon Skywalk? That's just friction' wet-your-pants stupid. The Sundial Bridge in Redding is almost tolerable, especially at night when it's light up. But the Grand Canyon Skywalk? It's worse than the EdgeWalk in Toronto. I've learned I have limits.

I'm just drunk enough to make wandering that trail look like a good idea.  I'm sure I'd chicken out once I got to the planks though, despite the fact that it looks like it's rather well maintained.

Big wall climbers beg to differ - stand in a pair of etriers day after day and a portaledge seems safe by comparison:

Good grief, I don't generally get vertigo, but dayum. . .

I read something at a FARK link or somewhere earlier this week or last week. It was a piece written by a pilot who mentioned that many if not most pilots are afraid of heights.

That struck me as odd, though I admit, I love to fly (SEL with glider add on), and I am mostly afraid of heights.

Is there any reason to think that more pilots on average are afraid of heights than the population at large?

It must be nice to work for NatGeo.  Hey, what's the scariest place you've ever been?

Oh, you haven't been there?  Let us give your a very expensive camera and a film crew so you can tell us all about it.

That would be nice, wouldn't it?

I could probably handle climbing up... but coming down that would be sketchy as all hell!  I might just have to stay there and become a monk at the teahouse.

It's not standing, but I thought those rides on top of the Stratosphere Casino in Las Vegas are scary.

The Grand Canyon Skywalk is perfectly safe and the view is incredible. That being said, it's also rediculously expensive and forget about taking your own pictures of it as they want to scam you out of $30/picture from their "photographers".

I beg to differ because climbers aren't afraid of heights.  Someone standing in a pile of garter snakes is 100% safe.  But, if that person is afraid of snakes, to them it's like a 100 loaded guns pointed at their head.  Much more terrifying than something you do day after day as you say.

RoyBatty: I  read something at a FARK link or somewhere earlier this week or last week. It was a piece written by a pilot who mentioned that many if not most pilots are afraid of heights.

Former high school teacher of mine was an acrobatic pilot who was terrified of heights. She explained it as a control thing; if she's at the controls, she knows when she's going to "fall." Much different than being on a platform that could fail at any moment. You also generally only see the horizon in front of you, and don't look straight down.

I've only been on the roller coaster on the Stratosphere and all I have to say is it's a bunch of meh.  The inside observation deck with no railing by the curved glass has a more sphincter clenching experience than the roller coaster.
