If she travelled to Pakistan for fun and got her guards killed protecting her from danger in a lawless region, I might find it in my heart to blame her a little. Not in civilized lands, though.

Also, nothing happened to him, his guards died protecting him. While he went bicycling, not transporting vital medical supplies or raising money for a charity, or anything but riding his bike. The only difference between his bicycling hobby and someone playing WoW obsessively is no one dies protecting the WoW player.

I had a friend who wanted to travel to Pakistan and was asking for advice on her Facebook page, but requested no one post anything from Western media because they're all lies.  Then the two Czech women got kidnapped.  She changed her mind pretty quickly after that.

This being the same person who while in Japan when the 2011 earthquake/tsunami occurred basically said everything in Fukushima was totally OK and that all other media outlets were totally exaggerating the damage done at the plant and the potential effects.  I wonder how that one turned out.

A message on Facebook said he intended to continue his trip from Europe on into Asia and the rest of the world.

It takes a special type of personality to go on one of these global bike trips -- for whatever freaking reason -- through war zones and just accept the fact that folks get their shiat blown away so you can make some kind of statement or record.

I still can't fathom the personality it takes for civilians from the USA to vacation in a war torn nation, knowing that the chances are very high that (A) civilians may get killed around them as insurgents try and knock off the Americans and (B) they may as well have targets on their backs.

Such folks usually gush about how they like the people, the food, the culture while they duck bullets, have to get security forces to escort them about and, on at least one occasion, had the car they were in riddled with bullets.

Yeah. Makes me want to run right over to some dirt nation, squabbling over religious stuff, blowing up as many civilians as they can with suicide bombs and more than happy to kidnap or gut a tourist, especially one from the USA. Just because I like the ambiance.

I think such folks figure their passports give them actual immunity from being shot to pieces.

And never let a little thing like a bloody civil war along with genocide get in the way of your walking or biking trip across the globe because your statement is more important than the little things like folks wantonly slaughtering each other. Tweet and blog about it as you go.

This guy and his associates come off as complete an utter assholes. Six people die for his bullshiat quest that nobody cares about and there's no mention of condolences or anything, just "First of all, we want to thank the Spanish consulate in Pakistan for all their help. We've received a call from the embassy and they have informed us that Javier is well and not hurt."

Then again maybe BBC is just being short on the pleasantries.

Because he doesn't believe that people should spend one day of the year hitting themselves in the head with boards, because of something that happened sometime.  Or is it whipping themselves with chains?  I think they should update it and stick loaded guns in their mouths and pull the trigger, on that special day.

Or it could have been his smug expression, as he rode by on his fixie, after telling them he was headed for counties they had probably never heard of.  They really hate hipsters over there.

Whoever the victim is, if they walk through `firebomb alley` wearing a suit made from petrol then there is some thing you might expect to happen.

Your Alanology (Named after Alan the nazi troll - he godwins himself) had some merit if we match it to the situation.

The matching situation here is if the rape victim dragged the accused into an alley got naked and asked the accused to have sex with them, which they did and then reported them for rape.

He`s an idiot. Everyone seems amazed that people are letting him be *such* an idiot that he is getting other people killed now.

The `least damage` situation going forward is if this idiot gets himself killed as quick as possible so other people stop being killed trying to keep him alive.

You don`t need to actively kill them but stop keeping them alive at the cost of others...

I imagine a lot of people just have a hard time imagining perfect strangers wanting to hurt them simply because they're there.

When you're in your hometown you can generally recognize the sort of derelict portions of town that may not seem safe, but you go off to some other city or country even and you may not readily recognize the signs of someone that may be dangerous.

It seems like the sort of person that probably think others are just being really cold and emotionless for not wanting to strike up a conversation with someone on the street that looks homeless, when those people may be familiar with stories of such people actually attacking others due to being insane and/or violent drug addicts.

Mexico City however?  Yea fark that place, be safer in Beirut.  Showing up there white is like wearing a "Please kidnap me" sign.

I've been to Mexico City many times.  Never had any problems.  They don't have the cartel crime that much of the rest of the country has, just big city crime.  However there are certain neighborhoods you don't visit.

spawn73: legion_of_doo: But they're European! Why would anyone attack them? They're not even American!

If the guards had went alone, they would still have been killed.

I'm guessing this is why they even attempted this. They can't admit that their country is so farked up that there's parts of it where 12 armed guards can't enter without half of them being killed.
