(Politico)   Early reviewers say that made-for-Netflix documentary on Mitt Romney, shot under a secrecy agreement during the campaign, reveals a likable, more human Mitt Romney. Apparently Hollywood SFX wizards have finally solved "the Uncanny Valley"   (politico.com) divider line 65

Every time I see that scene, I can't help but wonder how long Brent Spiner was able to hold that face without him (or anyone else in the room) LOL'ing their ass off.

well, if you could edit reality to fit a narrative, he probably wouldn't have came across as such a twatknob.

we just need a larger cutting room floor, so to speak.

So what? Sure he was probably a "nice guy" in person. That doesn't mean he wouldn't have been a a-hole as president or even as a boss. I've know many people who are pretty likeable as a person but when it comes to business (which Romney thought the presidency was) they are just a-holes who do whatever to get their way.

I'm sure he's a nice guy to people he personally knows. I'm also sure his policies would have thrown the 99.99% of Americans whom he doesn't know under the bus.

The best part of RNC for Romney was the personal stories people told about him.  How he ministered to them when they were depressed and helped them out on an individual level.  They were very humanizing.  And I said at the time - and still believe - that Romney should get out of politics and go back his church, because his passion seems to be helping people in a one-on-one level.

But no matter how NICE the man might actually be, his national politics weren't going to help the majority of the country.

You know how when you're on a date you should pay attention to how they treat the waiter? This sort of feels like someone saying "But they're so nice to you. Forget that he spent five minutes chewing out the waiter for letting his water glass stand empty for a minute."

Romney's 47% comments and general view of the less fortunate aren't really redeemed by being nice to the guys filming him.

That disparity, Whiteley says, "is something that the campaign and the people who worked on his campaign should probably take a look at."

Why would they? The Republican mantra is "act like an asshole". Look at McCain, he actually used to have some class, he reached across and worked with the Dems, he was the first Senator to call for an investigation into the Iraq WMD fiasco when we spent all that money and those lives and found nothing.

Then he runs for President and turns into a total douche.

This is an important point to realize about people like Romney. People like them can really only empathize with a very narrow circle of contacts. While I do not doubt he is an angel to those who know him and interact with him on a personal and 'familial' level, he has shown he is a cold machine of business when it comes to macro issues.

While you need a cold executive for many parts of being a President, you don't want to be ONLY that. The government can't be run strictly by what the spreadsheets say.

Well that's because they didn't show the ones where he threatened a feminist with excommunication and said a single woman should give up her newborn for adoption because she reflects poorly on the church.

It's what you get when a Mormon does a story/documentary on another Mormon.

Shiny, happy, feel good family values story with a bit of 'aw shucks!' emotion thrown in.

2014-01-22 05:47:31 PM
Of course citizen Romney is a whole hell of a lot more likeable than candidate Romney. That is the whole problem with the Republican candidates. They have to court an unholy mess of conservative Christians, Tea Party anti-poors, and big business special interests that make their platforms, speeches, and general personality completely unlikable.  Happened to Bob Dole, John McCain, and now Mitt Romney.

I don't understand how anybody can vote Republican their ideas and policies are destroying the United States.

2014-01-22 05:51:04 PM
I don't think Romney is entirely a bad guy, like McCain, they are both hung up by their Buster Browns by the far right wing who think that even saying good morning to a democrat is near treason.

If Massachusetts Governor Romney ran he might have had a better chance but the right hated him for even giving healthcare to the pours and if he had reached out they would have never let him win the primaries and even that was a battle for him because of the fact he worked with the dems in Mass. So he played it up that the half of the country is a bunch of no good deadbeats, corporations are people thing and ran from his healthcare plan like it was on fire. Helping people is not the GOP way. Helping only themselves is.

Plus the whole Mormon thing creeped alot of people out. The magic underwear you can plainly see on them and the fact he really got prickly when asked questions about it. But it was mostly catering to the far right Fox News crowd that made him lose and will make many a GOP hopeful lose in the future..But dont tell them that.

Shocking a movie made with the consent of a public figure shows the public figure in a good light, I mean it isn't like you could edit the footage to make someone look good or bad depending on the message a film maker was trying to express

it is kinda humorous that it's an openly accepted fact that one of the biggest hurdles their campaign had was making their candidate seem like a human.

by the end, they were willing to accept 'vaguely mammalian'.

Anonymous Bosch: So a documentary that was made in agreement with the Romney campaign shows him in a positive light?

Okay.

NPR interview with the filmmaker revealed that he had the idea to do the film. Found out that a friend of his knew/worked with Tag Romney and passed along the idea. Tag was into it and came back and said Mitt said no (this was all before announcing a run for Pres.) More persistence and he found out that Mitt's wife liked the idea but Mitt still blew it off as a "why would anyone want to do a boring take on me?"
Fast forward, after more calls to Tag, Tag said that Ann thought it would be great and to show up Christmas Eve because they would be having a family discussion about the run for Pres. Filmmaker promised that he'd just call it a favor and film their night and give them the footage afterwards. If they liked the idea, then he'd continue.
So he showed up, Mitt answered the door, rolled his eyes and let him in.

I doubt John Lauber thought he was a "nice guy" in person after being assaulted and humiliated by him.

No, no... just thought it was a telling piece of the puzzle. Didn't know who did the film, but listening to the interview, I realized it was just more Mormon propaganda disguised as a documentary.

Just wondering why I've stayed here so long... there are some cool aspects of Utah that we rather keep on the DL. No need for outsiders to ruin it for us.

He's an extremely wealthy asshole, who doesn't give a shiat about the middle class and poor, unless it's to pay lip service to them in order to make himself look better... Yep, it was pretty amazing the way McCain suddenly changed when he became "handled" by the RNC instead of acting on his own (as he did during the primaries).

And I guess one could also be more human when out of the spotlights of the studio, being harassed by liberal plants, filing women in blinders.

Except that Obama guy. When he's not "vacationing" in Hawaii, I'm sure he's cozying up with some America Hatin' fanatics.

I've seen the trailer and Mitt does look relatively human (relative to how he made himself look during the campaign).  Very out of touch, but there is definitely some feeling in there somewhere.

Tag came off as a complete asshole, though.

I have zero problem believing the man is a decent human being to his immediate family.

Its when he puts on her public persona that all animation drains away,  He was the Chameleon Candidate, all things to all people, but ultimately was nothing to any one person.
