p the boiler: The Purdue situation involved a student bringing a gun into a classroom and shooting someone multiple times in front of a class. That is not a "normal" shooting. It involves popping of a perceived bubble of innocence.

It may have been targeted, but in that moment no one knew that.

The vast majority of gun homicides in America are categorized as arguments or personal conflicts that boil over into violence. The shooting at Purdue was not exceptional in any way other than the media has decided that shootings on college campuses are newsworthy.

Also, random spree killings are exceedingly rare in America. If you see someone walk into a room and shoot someone, it's a pretty sure bet that they're not going to start shooting everyone else.

Colleges make a lot of effort to make everyone feel like they're a part of a special community, so violations of trust (like homicides) are a big shock to everyone involved. That's the real reason that people care.

Of course, it was a news story because someone reported gunshots, and they locked down the University. God forbid they give the 'All Clear!'. What were they thinking? They all could have gone home early if they hadn't pulled THIS move.

You wouldn't freak.

We had an incident a few months back on my campus (I work at a college) where we went into lockdown and had the local police crawling all over campus looking for a person armed with a rifle or sword (turns out it was an umbrella).

You just lock the doors, turn off the lights, keep your mouth shut and just wait it out.  Oh, and you gather a bunch of heavy objects in your office to throw at anyone who might come through the door.

Interesting part of that:  My boss came by and said something we couldn't quite hear through the door, so we didn't actually know it was him, and one of the people in my office said "I don't know you, I'm not opening the door".  At which point I said, quietly, "It's probably not a good idea to let unknown people know this office is occupied".

She *BLANCHED* when I said that, realizing what she had done.

But no, you probably won't freak until you actually hear gunshots, unless you're the kind of person who is always tightly wound anyway,.

Apt. Funny. And a great gif.

Comics are uncanny. Think about the funny walk that Michael Palin's character was trying to get a grant for in the Funny Walk sketch. It had to be funny but not as funny as the original. So, they had to calibrate funny. I get dizzy thinking about it. And here's Izzard doing a series of the same gag except each look slightly different. And the first time I saw the routine, each was funnier than the one before.

It's tough to tell anymore. I've heard tell of sinister guns hijacking innocent people and using them to commit horrific atrocities. They say that the big black ones do it most often, but I'm not really sure, as I don't know if surface-color-based profiling is acceptable or not.

You guys are making fun, but it's not like an actual gunman on campus is some sort of stretch.

Schools have to react IMMEDIATELY to any sort of threat- and if they don't they get sued, fined by the Department of Education and have to hear about how "this tragedy could have been prevented" for years.

True, I guess it depends on how close you were to the action.  Luckily I work in the business world and that seems to be on the decline these days.  My wife does work at a school though and they have had several lockdowns with the kids.  The kids make it much much worse.

meyerkev: Perducci: R.A.Danny: NEWSFLASH: Nothing happened and people are upset at the lost opportunity to talk gun control.

Don't worry.  Hundreds of other people have been senselessly shot elsewhere across the United States today.

11000 gun homicides per year*/365 days = ~30/day.

* Keeping in mind that a non-zero are (actually honest-to-god) self-defense, and there's another 17000 suicides, so it's more like 76/day.  Still not hundreds though.

"Shot" doesn't always mean "killed", though.
According to CDC statistics, there are another 160-or-so people wounded by gunfire in an average day.  And then there are even more who are shot at but not actually injured.  Many of these incidents could be fairly called a "shooting".

So, semantics aside, I still think it's fair to say that there are an enormous number of senseless shootings across the US in a given day.  School shootings just concentrate a few of these into a single location.

First rumor that swirled through campus was that it was some kind of long gun like a rifle or shotgun.  Then it was said to have been a sword.

According to subsequent news reports,  a "well-meaning citizen" flagged down a police officer and told them they saw a person entering one of the campus buildings with what looked like a sword.  Police locked down the campus, and when they reviewed the security footage, they figured out that what the person thought was a weapon was in fact an umbrella.
