Not that he cares I'm sure. We're all here clicking on the links and he's getting paid. But in deleting my Fark app that notifies me of new flashes.

I would sit tight in my office, but not freak out. Purdue has 40,000 students, staff, and faculty. A report of someone shot on Purdue's campus is like a report of someone shot in a small city. That's not even counting how Purdue is blended into West Lafayette.

Where I went to undergrad the town + college numbered about 25,000 people total. There was one homicide while I was there (which did involve a student, incidentally), and while everyone was aware that it had happened, no one I knew felt personally afraid.

At approximately 11:17 AM (CST), Norman (Oklahoma, home of OU) Police received a report that simply said "Shots fired" at Gould Hall, the architecture building just west of the football stadium. Everyone was told to shelter in place while it was investigated.

At approximately 12;05 PM (CST), OU announced (home page, tweeted, sent text messages) that there is no evidence that there were shots fired, nor of any injuries. Shortly thereafter, they told everyone to resume normal activities, except for avoiding the one building in question. They are still searching Gould Hall floor-by-floor just to be sure.

There is road re-construction going on immediately west of Gould Hall on a small, non-through road (part of the South Oval), and many are speculating that someone reported construction noise as a gunshot.

There are no reports of anyone brandishing concealed weapons for any reason, thankfully, as that could have gotten out of hand quickly. The University is busily patting itself on the back for a quick and efficient response (which seems true, but could have waited a few hours), and everyone in the area goes just a little bit more on edge.

11000 gun homicides per year*/365 days = ~30/day.

* Keeping in mind that a non-zero are (actually honest-to-god) self-defense, and there's another 17000 suicides, so it's more like 76/day.  Still not hundreds though.

January the 22nd, 2014, was much like any other winter's day in Norman, and Ralph Melish, a file clerk at an insurance company, was on his way to work as usual when...Nothing happened.

Scarcely able to believe his eyes, Ralph Melish looked down. But one glance confirmed his suspicions. Behind a bush, on the side of the road, there was *no* severed arm. No dismembered trunk of a man in his late fifties. No head in a bag. Nothing. Not a sausage.

For Ralph Melish, this was *not* to be the start of any trail of events which would not, in no time at all, involve him in neither a tangled knot of suspicion, nor any web of lies, which would, had he been not uninvolved, surely have led him to no other place, than the central criminal court of the Old Bailey.

The Purdue situation involved a student bringing a gun into a classroom and shooting someone multiple times in front of a class. That is not a "normal" shooting. It involves popping of a perceived bubble of innocence.

It may have been targeted, but in that moment no one knew that.

Obvious we're looking at a cover up by the conservative constabulary who are worried that a shooting in their own backyard would undermine pro-gun arguments.

2014-01-22 01:43:25 PM
No NEW evicence of shots fired at OK-U   pleanty of evidence of previous gunfire, I suspect someone was counting the bullet holes in the ceiling and came up with the previous number +1 and panic ensued.   after a recount - pre-empted by Bush vs Gore they decided that recounting was not needful and sent the swat team home.

YAY.

cygnusx13: Days since last school shooting = 0

Except that nobody shot anybody at OU.

Cyberluddite: As of right now, the entire text of story reads as follows:

Norman, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma says authorities have found no evidence of shots being fired on campus and no injuries have been reported.

University spokeswoman Catherine Bishop says in a statement that normal campus operations have resumed except for Gould Hall, where additional checking is continuing Wednesday.

You know gun violence in has gotten really bad when a story about a college campus where  no shots are fired for one day is a News Flash.  Hell, back when I was in college, no shots were fired on our campus damn near every day!

Except that's not the story at all... The STORY is that someone reported shots fired, and they are correcting that to say that it was a false alarm, rather than leave everybody hanging, or let the false stories float around.

Jesus, already the disinformation is spreading.

This seems to make the point made in the last thread of this type sound even more valid:

Sliding Carp: I suspect the cops watch the hoopla (which expands every time) during and after every event, and don't want to be seen as doing less than somebody else, so we end up with bigger and bigger disruptions and more and more control of our movement ceded to 'the authorities' even when it seems very likely the event is over.

i.e. "shooter in custody", coupled with "remain in place until further notice" and a labor- and time-intensive sweep of a large campus, worried about almost certainly non-existent accomplices.
