Brazil has to survive the World Cup first, which has the potential for all kinds of bad.

The good thing is the Olympics are going to downscale after this debacle and Brazil next time.  The IOC will go with 'safe' cities for the next 100 years. It will basically be a cycle of US, Canadian, and Japanese cities. I vote for Berlin to get at least one in there somewhere though.

What really sucks is that NBC won't show the bombings until 24 hours later.

They won't even mention them at all unless an American is killed or injured.

Russia is really looking bad in all this. I was born in 1985 so to most people my age Russia wasn't the big scary bad guy we grew up hating. But between this and their treatment of their LGBT population, while they're not as scary as they used to be, Russia looks like a thuggish bully of a nation

2014-01-22 01:31:01 PM
But how would the bombings effect Lindsey Vonn's relationship with her mother?  Which American skier had a similar event in his background?  Does the threat of a bombing make it harder for a figure skater's grandma to make it to the games?

Come on - tell us about the IMPORTANT stuff!

Born a year earlier and same here.  Never grew up afraid of Russia.  The nice thing about Russia is that it's really only motivated by two things:  (1) Putin and his mobster buddies making money and (2) Putin and his mobster buddies maintaining their little sphere of influence in international relations.  Once you understand that, you understand Russia.

Outside of that, Russia's main role in the world appears to be proving that Neanderthals never really died out.

From what I gather NBC will show a highly edited version of the games during primetime. If I wanted to watch and don't want to fark around with an online stream, are there any options?

Sounds like a Warren Zevon song. "Black Widows, Guns and Money."

Also, it's too bad that Hunter S. Thompson is dead. I would love to have him cover the games.

Isnt the US the only Olympics that got bombed so far? and West Germany the one with worst terrorism? I mean its good to hate the evil Russians and all for the turrible Olympic bombing it is about to receive. And Lord knows we should attack them with our shrillest voices for being mean to homosexuals until their evil Russian ears burn like the fires of hell. But maybe, just maybe we should wait for a literal bombing  to happen in Sochi before we gleefully dive in for the internet coup de grace on Russia's throat for allowing itself to be bombed? Otherwise it'd seem just a skosh hypocritical.

It might be awesome if you could avoid being affected by the world collectively losing it's mind.

Also, hoping for an event which would surely kill thousands of people directly, and who knows how many via the reaction, just for schadenfreude?  Not cool.

The games may downscale on the lavish spending side, there's only so many developing superpowers and oligarchs, but the cost of security will continue to skyrocket. Lots of potential locations that have existing infrastructure want nothing to do with the games because of the cost and hassles of security.

I live in Denver, a 'wanted' host for the 2022 games or 26 etc. Fark No! We even have a lot of infrastructure to accommodate the winter games anyway. But, Fark the cost. Fark the security. Fark the traffic. Fark the hassle. Fark it. I will use my vote, money, and time to lobby against the games coming to Colorado.  No way I want them here.

No there was another lunatic in an earlier thread hoping for a right good bomb too. Only he hoped that some magic anti terrorist group defused the bomb at the last second so people got good and terrorized but not killed.

To be honest Im not sure which one of you is less sane.

agreed. not going for the games here last time was the right choice. can not imagine what a dangerous mess i70 would be. particularly in a storm.

where would all the people stay, assuming they do the snow stuff at breck/vail/bc? aspen and sw colorado are both non starters to hold events.

would be nice to see olympic athletes tearing up silverton though.

Why not both?  Like the scene in Fifth Element when that guy defuses the bomb and it reactivates

See, everyone wins!
