At least he didn't go to the Dodgers. That's all I care.

As a Cubs fan, I'm just fine with them not spending that much on him.  They aren't contending for the next few years anyway, so why invest THAT much money in a guy who is unproven in MLB?

MLB has become a sham. The lack of a salary cap will eventually cripple the game.

that's why the only World Series in the past few decades you can argue was "won by payroll" is the 2009 Yankees.. or that MLB generally has more diversity in teams making it to conference and league championships than the other major 3?

Actually, more and more, its turning out the good pitchers in Japan are - surprise! - good pitchers here, too. JPB is closer to MLB quality (whatever that means today), than a lot of people suspect. There are a couple of places on Roku where you can get streamed JPB games early in the morning, and some the games are just as much fun to watch as any MLB game...

$22 million a year for someone who has never pitched in MLB. Yep, Yankees are totally committed to financial responsibility

It would more likely be "Tanaka-senshu (選手)" as they tend to use that honorific for baseball players.

All well and good, but I would hesitate to throw a deal like that at the most proven of MLB pitchers. They just don't last.

I WAS however amused by THIS quote ftfa:

"There has been criticism of myself and my brother the last couple years that, gee, if our dad was still in charge, we'd be spending this and spending that and doing whatever it takes to win," Hank Steinbrenner said, referring to late Yankees owner George Steinbrenner.

"He didn't have revenue sharing, at least for most of his time," Hank Steinbrenner added. "That's what these people in the sports media don't seem to get. If it wasn't for revenue sharing, we'd have a payroll of $300 million a year if we wanted to. So we're doing this despite having to pay all that revenue sharing."

I wish it was him, that would be awesome and I'd go to every Yankee game next year.

I just hope we don't get Irabu'd. At least George won't be around to call him a fat toad.

Even so, a decent quality pitcher combined with pitching at Dodger Stadium 17x a year is going to help their ERA and WHIP.

Sony could air that one MLB The Show ad lampooning Cubs fans every year for a decade more and it will likely still be relevant

He went 27-0 with a 1.27 ERA last year. But I'm sure his WHIP and defense-independent pitching stats weren't very good, so I'm sure he's overrated.

If you truly hate the Yankees, you'd be wishing for him to end up like Kei Igawa.

Couple things I enjoyed about the article.

The Yankees' offseason plan since the beginning of their organizational meetings in October was to go on a massive spending spree, while trying to drop the payroll...

The Yankees' fifth starter spot will be a competition between Michael Pineda, David Phelps, Vidal Nuno and David Phelps.

Phelps gets two cracks at it.
I completely forgot Michael Pineda was alive.

It just strikes me as an intentionally long term deal where they'll start wisely replacing those infield pieces one at a time as opportunities arise.

There is I think a 3rd year opt out for tanaka if the yanks don't go that route.

So how many years in a row is this that the Yankees have lied about getting under the luxury cap?  Clearly the penalty still isn't high enough.

For every Steinbrenner, there are 3 Lorias, and every Loria is twice or more "crippling" than any Steinbrenner could be.

Opening Day isn't here yet, and the penalty skyrockets this year if they don't make it (I believe 50%?). This was the year they would've had to make it to avoid it.

What boggles me is why you would care what the Yankees' internal financial goals are.

I think it's been at 50% for a while.  If they had hit the 189 million mark that would have reset to whatever the base level is next time they went above the threshold.

Well, you can argue about the defense-independent stuff if you'd like, but WHIP is pretty straight forward.  It's walks plus hits per inning, aka how many men are you letting on base during a game.  Not many decent pitchers have good seasons with an awful WHIP.  I'm pretty sure if we investigated, Takawa probably has a pretty good WHIP to go with that record and ERA. Let's see...yup 0.943, that's pretty good.  But don't let me put a damper on your nascent rant, got any mom's basement jokes?
