As a loser of multiple Championship games over the years, it's a right of passage and honor to shiat all over our team that was one game awy from the frickin Super Bowl.

It is natural and part of the healing process.

Yeah, they totally suck. They only made it to the AFC Championship with a roster full of no names after losing their best players to injury and having one of their best players be charged with homicide during the offseason. They're awful!

The Pats had the right game plan on offense: they had several wide open receivers way down the field, and Brady overthrew all of them.  Hell, he missed on several routine throws.  The defense did a decent enough job of getting a few shortened drives out of Manning.  The game plan was nearly perfect, but Brady was not.

\of course, no one in media will note this

"Blame Welker" seems to be the way to go.  Two years ago it was for not catching a pass thrown high and behind him.  This year it was for having the audacity to collide with a defensive back in the middle of the field.

Or injuries.  Did you know the Patriots were the only team in the league to lose players to injury this year?

In any event, they've put together the kind of organization that is always in position to have these conversations in mid-late January.  I wouldn't trade the Giants recent history for the Patriots' run of success, but there aren't many other teams who can say that.  Pretty remarkable job done by Kraft/Belichick.

Hey, they held the Broncs to 26 points at home.  That itself is a minor miracle, especially considering they're 26th in the league.

I mean, yes and no.  The Broncos drip-dried them and converted damn near every 3rd down all day long.  You're not likely to put up big point totals if you have two TD drives longer than 7 minutes.

They did a good job limiting Denver's big plays, but they didn't exactly make life difficult for Manning, and coming out of halftime they needed to keep the Broncos out of the end zone to stay in the game, and gave up an 80-yard, 7 minute TD drive that effectively ended it.

That said, it wasn't all their fault.  Punt-punt-punt for the NE offense to start the game certainly didn't help.

I said this a few days ago in another thread:

I can't for the life of me understand their offensive game plan this year.  They lost Hernandez to arrest, Welker and Woodhead to free agency, Gronk was injured to start the year, and they replaced these guys with a former college QB as their #1 WR, they aquired an always-injured slot receiver (who got hurt, go figure), and two rookie wideouts.  Their offense was built around short and intermediate passes to their TEs, but they really didn't have a single pass-receiving TE on the field for the first half of the year.  They depend on timing routes, which the rookies couldn't handle and the other receivers weren't on the same page as Brady for most of the year.  It was painful watching the Pats offense for much of the year.

Why the hell didn't they revert to a more traditional offense in training camp, when Hernandez got cut and Gronk wasn't ready?  Grab a big full-back off someone's practice roster, and play lots of smash-mouth football?  Two tight-end sets or six O-linemen, and run the hell out of the ball.  Feed Ridley and Blount, and live off of simple play-action passes from Brady to his new receivers.  At least until everyone got on the same page.

/I am in no position to criticize the Patriots' coaching staff, I'm just a fan who watches at home, but this has puzzled me all year.

Brady didn't really have that impressive of a season. People calling for him to be in the MVP race for smoking crack. His backs had over 2000 yards rushing. The Pats had the 4th best average starting position on drives (defense/ST). The Patriots obviously had a lot to overcome in the receiving department (injuries, no Welker, dropped catches), but Brady had his worst season in a decade for reasons beyond that. He took a ton of sacks and his accuracy wasn't as good as it has been in years past. He still had a good year, just not up to his normal standards.

2014-01-22 01:15:53 PM
The Pats defense was the truly impressive unit. They overachieved considerably given their injuries, and the defense coupled with the running game were the key factors for the team's success this year. Brady performed about as well as we have come to expect, however I would lay the success of the offense on the shoulders of Belichick and the OC; calling for Brady to be in the MVP discussion is pure silliness.

Roethlisberger and Romo come to mind. I should have been more clear. Brady didn't really do more with "less." He had considerable help from other parts of his team. Heck I would argue that Luck did more with less as well. For all the injuries the Pats had on offense, the Colts had more with worse line play and a host of other factors.

I think you make a decent point. There were certainly worse offensive lines in the NFL this season. In terms of skill positions, though I'd say the more with less battle is won by Brady. Overall offense, you're spot on with Romo/Ben. As a team... Romo. Dude had the worst defense (almost historically bad) and had his team in a position to win his division.

So, yeah I'll concede your point.

Two things lost the Patriots the Championship game more than anything else:

-No Wilfork.
-Brady missing those wide open passes.

The Broncos are just too good a team to beat in the best of times but when you don't have your best player on defense and your best player on offense is in a funk it just won't happen.

Frankly everyone I know who's a fan felt a big disappointment coming this season, it was just a matter of when it would rear it's head.

I asked the original question and I think Romo is a great answer. Until we can see what he can do with a real defense behind him (re: not having to make desperate passes late to catch up and possibly throw the pick), I submit the dude gets undeserved criticism. I also imagine Roethlisberger would have gotten some notice had Succop kicked Pitt into the playoffs. No small feat to be a top-ten statistical QB when what I mostly heard about Pittsburgh this year was most of their roster is well past its sell-by date.

I'd say Denver played it pretty smart and went ball-control over no-huddle-quick-strike and limited possessions (the Patriots' fewest possessions for the season, in fact) for both teams to keep scoring down.  Most of the snaps came with 2-3 seconds left on the play clock.

It worked out perfect when they got the TD to Thomas after using up half the quarter to start the second half. Dagger, really.

I've always felt as a Vikings fan that I'd love him in Minnesota. Even the day after the famous playoff fumble, I'd have taken him.

And as a Vikings Fan, I would think he would be a perfect edition  addition to our legacy. You know, looking great and then choking when it matters.

Well, they'll need to wait a few years until he's fully past his prime. Either way, I understand this is a Pats convo and not a Romo convo. Some people feel strongly that he chokes. I feel his defense puts him in desperation situations more than other QBs. If he played with a better D, he wouldn't need to throw 30 times in the second half. Others disagree. That's fine.
