Oops-- too soon. *ahem*

The author's skepticism based on the fact that a lot of people don't use Facebook underestimates the extent to which those people's daily interactions will be influenced by people who do.

(IMHO)

Well, yeah. You are not dealing with a random sample pool. The type of people who are involved in social media (much less motivated enough to indicate political preferences while online) are a self-selecting population. It is almost the reverse of the land-line phone survey.

Predicting the outcome of a binary decision outcome (50/50 chance) isn't hard to do. You're right 50% of the time, so long as you stick to random choices and ignore your biases.

Using data to model the outcome of that decision can give you an edge on those odds if your model is able to hold through cultural shifts. But often, those models are only as good as their assumptions, and those assumptions are based on thought processes that make sense the day the model's created, but which are outdated 5-10 years down the line.

So, the author's right to be skeptical. I'm just not sure he understands WHY he's right.

Kelly is a satirical political cartoon on The Onion.  It mocks the smug, self-satisfied and fundamentally ill-informed opinions of a lot of political cartoonists.

(along with their abuse of labels for obvious things, overuse of important metaphors, and treating their own lives as relevant political commentary)

It's a continuation of a long-running series of comics where the cartoonist ("Kelly") biatches about the youth and their new-fangled technologies.

I find they hit the perfect Kaufmanesque sweet spot in that, if you didn't know better, any one of them could pass for a truly terrible but sincere comic.  Kind of an inverse Jack Chick, in that Chick is dead-serious but virtually every panel of his is utterly ridiculous.

goodbomb: 'media' is plural. 'social media is...' is incorrect. they are.

But the singular COULD be used if the implication is the singular collective opinion of all social media sites.
Or "social media" could be inferred as a generic descriptor for an unnamed site.

Point A: The opinion of social media is that cat pictures are funny
Point B: A social media (Facebook) poll is going to decide if cat pictures are funny

/Yes, in the second one, "social media" are supporting adjectives of the word poll, but the singular still applies

Which would be more humorous: that silk-screened on a cheap t-shirt, or nicely embroidered on an Oxford shirt with french cuffs?

Snarcoleptic_Hoosier: Yes, in the second one, "social media" are supporting adjectives of the word poll, but the singular still applies

And yet you completely miss the fact that the singular subject in the first sentence is "opinion" and not "social media." So both are really piss poor examples.

Social media is a recent cultural and technological development.
Various social media are good ways of getting your message across a wide audience.
