Of course. And since insurance actuarials do the same calculations.. for profit insurance seems more and more outrageous and single payer (across more than health) a smarter and smarter possibility...

Ok, while the article isn't specifically about what sub by said....I do have to ask the question

Why do bookies need staff? All they do is feed sheets of OMR paper thru a machine. A computer could quite easily do that...as well as dispense cash, and confirm your bet...it could even have video calling to an 'operator' if you want to place a custom bet.

because you need a way to enforce payment.  if it's legal, you have the courts.  if it's illegal, you have to create recourse.

/ and, of course, since it's illegal, some guy with a gun will just rob you, and you will have no recourse.  unless you create recourse (or pay off the local organized crime element to ensure recourse)

Do Bloomberg terminals cover sports news? I could see some bored Wall St quants glancing at sports and bankrupting sports books.

Article mentions Ladbrokes and William Hill, two very well known bookies in the UK (and probably elsewhere as well).

In the UK gambling is not illegal and frequently takes place at betting shops you will find on most high streets. I'm not really sure why you think gambling is illegal, you are actually quite wrong on this matter.

/Get back to your side of the Atlantic.

I think the mystery may have been solved, as my friend said, it's nice to have a human face and some punters probably go regularly just because of the banter with the staff...if a machine is sucking your £10 notes in then you lose that interaction.

Meh. Online to place bets real time collection for swings $500 or more. Untraceable.

State lotteries took out those kind of bookies decades ago.
