The bat may fly south with the sun or the house martin or the plover may seek warmer climes in winter, yet these are not strangers to our land

You've just got two halves of a submarine's sonar and you're banging them together.

On second thought, let's not go to the Netherlands.  Tis a silly place.

When bats migrate they're called "snow birds".

Having come to late for the Monty Python jokes...WTF Britain, miles? I thought you were on the metric system.

Well, they don't have to migrate but they can't stay here!

2014-01-22 11:05:07 AM

It's not a question of where he grips it! It's a simple question of weight ratios! A five ounce bat could not carry a one pound coconut.

It's a matter of where it grips it.  It's a simple matter of weight ratio.  A 5 oz bat cannot carry a 1lb coconut.

I did a GIS for the migration of bats and yes, indeed, a few species of temperate zone bats are migratory, including the belovèd  Little Brown Bat in North America.

If they can do it here, they can do it anywhere.

British bats presumably spend two weeks on the Costa de Sol or in Greece each year, while some of the more prosperous British bats live in Brittany or Normandy and commute to work in London.

I'm having trouble with my browser (as usual) but hoary bats migrate from SoCal, Mexico and Florida to Canada in the Spring (the SoCal bats fly across Arizona and New Mexico and up around the Rockies on the East side). Flying from the UK to the Netherlands would be a cinch, seeing as the distance across the Channel at its narrowest is between ten and fifteen miles, IIRC. I expect most species of bats could fly that in a single night just to feed.

What if the bats were walking and dragging the coconut?

I would think a more likely scenario would be that the bats would chew a hole through the outside, drink the flavorful and nutritious natural coconut water, perhaps mix up some nice pina coladas... enlarge the hole... crawl inside... nosh on some delicious fresh coconut... then walk inside the coconut like a hamster wheel in the direction that they wish to go...  bats 'dragging' coconuts... HA!... what a maroon!

What is the air-speed velocity of an unladen bat?

There is a huge bat colony in Austin most of the year.  But not right now, because bats migrate.  They are in Mexico right now, and they'll be back in March or April.

Any "scientist" who thinks "OMG, do bats migrate!" hasn't gotten out of elementary school.
