Bendal: MeatGazer: Ahhh...  to be back vacationing in Hawaii...

Whirlwind "tour" around the Big Island a few years ago.  Needed a vacation from our vacation.

Pretty - for the most part.  Great place to visit.  Don't think I'd want to live there (Big Island)

I don't know; we visited both Oahu and the Big Island when we went to Hawaii, and I far preferred the Big Island over Oahu. Fewer people, a much more relaxed lifestyle, and Hilo still provides enough of an urban environment if you want that. Plus you can go from 80 degrees to below freezing on the Big Island in an hour or so.

//had to cancel our visit to the Mauna Kea observatories due to heavy snow

I definitely liked the "lack" of people...   Though staying at the King Kam in Kona when the cruise ships come in...   That's a lot of people.

The diversity of the island is pretty nice, too.  I played in the warm ocean and threw a snowball all in the same day.  The trip up to the observatories was pretty cool.  Literally and figuratively.  I'd been a mile up before (Mt. Mitchell) - and struggled to hike around.  But I was fat then.  The visitor's center on Mauna Kea is 9000 feet...  And I was the thinnest and in the best shape I'd been in in 5 years or so.  Was a bit taxing just walking around the nature preserve to snap some photos.  At 14k feet at the summit - I was worthless.  I thought I was going to fall over after I stooped to tie my shoe and stood up.

We didn't get into much town in Hilo - stayed in a B&B.  Tried Googling the place to no avail.  It may not be a B&B any more - none of them that showed up on Google Maps or Trip Advisor in the area were the one we stayed at.  Oh well.

If we ever do go back - staying longer in the Hilo area would be something I'm interested in.  Especially more time at the tide pools.

If only I had the money...
