"Spare the rod, spoil the child" writ large, and backed by a lot of financial incentive. At least, that's my assumption.

The guardians are convincing themselves they're "doing the right thing", while the torture camps just want to rake in that sweet sweet cash.  Cheap labor is just a side benefit.  It's a win-win-win.

I'm in Texas, and I'm always seeing little signs on sticks near gas stations, etc, advertising "troubled teen boot camp." It makes me sick. I will not pledge to pull over and destroy every sign I see from now on.

So, people not only let strangers kidnap their children to be broken down and brutalized over the course of months, they'll pay for this service? I am shocked these children might have been messed up in the first place.

I don't think we're getting the full story.  Everyone knows abused kids lie all the time, that's why you have to hit them.

You can't expect guardians to spend time with their children and provide guidance and education.  Not when there's places you can outsource it to.

WTF???

Wow. Browsed their page a bit. Here's the list of "disorders" they treat:

Students come into the program dealing with a wide variety of issues that may be manifested in any of the following ways:

Defiance
Verbal abuse towards parents
Loss of interest in positive activities
Isolation from family
Blaming others for problems
Sneaking out/running away
Poor choice of peers
Lying and manipulating
Stealing
Substance abuse
School truancy and failure
Internet abuse
Pornography
Sexually acting out
Depression
Suicidal thoughts and gestures
Eating disorders
Compulsive behaviors

I think about half of those can be covered under the description "Being a teenager".

Yeah, I think I covered most of those very nicely between the ages of 13 and 18.  Only we didn't have the internet.

Americans are far too busy and/or lazy to abuse their kids. Must easier to pay someone else to do it.

2014-01-21 05:46:49 PM
My estranged mother sent my half-sister off to a camp like that in Maine.  Besides the trauma that is still with her, the place was ridiculously expensive and completely ineffective.  I guess being a parent was just too much for her to handle so, you know, outsource.  Crazy shiat.

Having spent the last 12 months or so dealing with a teenager moving between 'normal' and 'mentally ill' I agree with PsiChick. At least half of those fall into the category of 'need serious psychological treatment.'

Having said that, the line isn't always very clearly drawn, which has been part of our struggle.

I stopped watching Dr. Phil when he started doing this on his show for ratings and the organization wanted $$$. Kids are troubled for a reason and its usually because the parents or guardians themselves don't have the skills or resources to be parents in the first place.

Parents nowadays are convinced that being a good parent involves never having any negative moments ever, and any negative moment needs to be solved somehow.  Kids get grumpy, teenagers get surly and start listening to music you hate and watching entertainment you can't stand.

Heaven and Hell are subjective states. You take me to an idol group concert and I'll literally throw up. Can't stand that shiat.

On the other hand, some people love nothing better and go all out crazygonuts when exposed to such an event, even folks my age and carriage.

And, of course, the parents have no mental muscles for disciplining the kids.

They get to be 16 years old and the parents have no idea how to deal with them.

And that usually happens after you bring them up under an authoritarian structure in the household, and then they get old enough to figure out you were full of shiat so no longer respect anything you have to say. It's funny how you rarely see that kind of surly/grumpy teenager stuff from parents who've raised their kids as people instead of annoyances.

Well, reading that left me unhappier than I was. I want to run home and hug my kids now, but I'm stuck at work for a couple more hours.

What the everloving fark? Why's this got to happen in my state? (I know, TFA says why, it's just embarrassing. I guess every state has something like this. At least...I hope so.)

Mostly Mormons.

Had a younger cousin who was sent to one of those schools in Montana because he was fighting, stealing, smoking weed and had been kicked out of 3 schools already. He is 23 now and still tells horror stories about his 5 months there. His parents finally pulled him out when he go heat stroke and ended up in the hospital for about a week, and the school's explanation of what happened didn't make any sense.

But I could imagine these schools would be huge havens for sexual abuse. They convince parents that their child is really messed up and any complaining or accusations they make are only them lying to get out of the school. My cousin said that he didn't see any sexual abuse, but their was plenty of physical abuse, and when they would complain to anybody outside of the school, even their parents, the school just basically explained it off as the kids at the school are a bunch of manipulative delinquents that will do anything to avoid discipline and are just trying to get back to their previous destructive life.

You were kidnapped in the middle of the night, flown to another country, not allowed contact with your parents, supervised even when using the bathroom, and treated like shiat? And you  liked it? Dude, the whole 'safe, sane, and consensual' thing is there for a reason.

Sounds wimpy when you intentionally leave out the part about her being kidnapped from her home and taken to a strange place with strange people on her grandparents' dime.
