(Bustle)   Female athletes suffer more concussions than male athletes, and their brains take longer to recover. So why do we think CTE, or post-concussion brain damage, is just for the NFL?   (bustle.com) divider line 80

itcamefromschenectady: This is a perfect example of how sources quote other sources incompetently and come up with factoids that are complete lies which are then copied into fark headlines for credulous people to recycle the misinformation.

When you follow the link in the article to their source, it says that male high school athletes have more concussions:

"Boys suffer the largest number of concussions overall because they play football. But when football is excluded, girls suffer more concussions, especially in soccer and basketball."

She was (maybe still is) a bartender down the road from the house.  Pretty cool chick.

But yea, the more I read about brain injury I'm really surprised there hasn't been a bigger crackdown.  MLB is making some changes, but not much else.

This is one of the few things I agree with the President on, I would think twice before letting my son play football

IlGreven: Oldiron_79: Boxing as actually more dangerous in the gloves era than it was in bare knuckles era because the glove actually protects the puncher's hand and wrists more than the punched's head allowing harder punches to be thrown.

...are you also advocating football players not wear helmets?

Rugby could offer a good non-helmeted control for US armored wankball

Except, the jury is still out on the long-term outlook for rugby players in regards concussion.
At least, I think it is, as a rugby player I may have read the report and forgotten about it.
That said, the lack of helmets means you do not tend to lead with the head and therefore have less of the constant effects of sub-concussions. However, when you do accidentally find your head collides with someone's hips...

...I tried to tackle this guy 1 on 1 in a game of 7s

I am told I was successful in the tackle, that I stopped the try and that we won the tournament.
Be nice to remember, it would have been one of the highlights of my less than stellar (but infinitely enjoyable) career. Still, I got a nice ambulance ride. My daughter got a funny story to tell about how I kept forgetting she was there. And a month or so later the headaches stopped.

/playing in the same tournament as him again this weekend
//different pools & we (the smashed crabs) are likely to be fighting for the spoon while he (and the King Browns) play for the plate
///no memory of last time = wouldn't be scared to do it again

Just ban all sports.  They are stupid, dangerous, do nothing for society, are a waste of time and money, and are rife with racism and misogyny.

That guy looks like he hits like a freight train.  I played ladies' rugby in college, and we seemed to mostly avoid the head injuries---but damn, so many wrecked knees and backs.  I knew a guy on our men's team that had his shin broken in 4 places.  International graduate students can play a rough game.

/glad I escaped with only a broken finger

brain damage doesn't always come from blunt trauma.

blood loss, too.  I don't think there are any Mensur clubs left.

Well, the sports they mention are basketball and soccer.  While concussions may happen in those sports, they are exceedingly rare.  So, this is much ado about nothing.

I've literally never heard anyone anywhere make that claim ever.

No shiat.  In fact, the first time I'd ever heard of sports related CTE was in relationship to women soccer players.   Apparently "heading" the ball too much is bad for the old grey matter.

Quite. Small enough that reporting bias could be everything. There's a much greater pressure on men never to admit to suffering injury - be a man, gut it out, run it off, etc - than women, who tend to be much smarter in their reactions to thing like this.
That would mean the study really found "women more likely to admit to / report being concussed", to which the answer is "yes, probably."

CTE(although it didnt have the name yet) has been known of in the world of boxing since about the early 20s(like circa 1920), about the time the first gloved boxers where dieing of old age.

It was largely the reason for most of the modern regulations of boxing like weight classes and limiting how often they can fight.

Lighterweight fighters had a much higher rate of carrer ending injuries and deaths when fighting much larger fighters than when 2 similar sized fighters face each other was the main reason weight classes in fight sports was invented.

Female athletes suffer more concussions in general, and see longer recovery times and poorer memory recall, which means the brain is damaged to a greater extent.

Well that is just bull shiat. Everybody knows that men and women are exactly the same (aside from that whole birthing thing) and anybody or anything that says different is just attempting to uphold the patriarchal construct that has been oppressing women for centuries.

Everyone should just run. Runners rarely suffer concussions.
