Aside from the storm debris.... no, it's not a problem.

Chernobyl was a bigger problem.

Manufacturing in China and taking advantage of its slave labor wages and complete lack of environmental rules is what makes America's business titans rich.  To have a problem with this is freedom in action would be un-American.

That acid rain should be great for your forests out there on the west coast.

oh wait... no it won't.

Oh, but that is right, pollution stories and reporting on China are just hype.   Not really an issue.  Fake.

Not like Global Warming which could not by hype.  Or hyped reporting.  No.

Here's the thing, though. Americans seem to bask in the schadenfreude of watching China's pollution problems spiral out of control. That's why we're so quick to believe -supposedly showing a simulated sunrise-that make China seem much more dystopian than it actually is.

Its not as if we enjoy watching someone else i trouble. The perplexing part is that everyone in the world saw how bad pollution can be, because the US used to be that way. We gave the world a blueprint of what not to do, and china said "fark it, lets take the same road anyway".

Thats the part that makes this amazing to watch. There is a difference between being the first fark-up and being the repeat fark-up.

Actually, by the '90s, the air was already pretty good.  Try 50 years ago before any smog equipment on cars, back when every summer there were multiple days when it hurt to breathe.

SuperNinjaToad: Freking Chinese!!!! why can't they be like the US who has never polluted anything before?

Difference being, the US put up laws within a reasonable time to stop such pollution when we knew how. China has not, and doesn't have to, because they get to whine about how it was unfair that the West got to have their Industrial Revolution without having to take account for such things.

It really is the dumbest thing you could think of.

Not only that, but it's not the titans who are buying the cheap crap that China makes.  It's those of us down here at this end of the income scale (middle and below) that are price conscious enough to look for deals.  Do the titans benefit? Sure, probably.  But the rest of us definitely do too.

Exactly.  Sixty years ago, clean[er] power generation, manufacturing and transportation either didn't exist or was prohibitively expensive.  A hundred years ago, even moreso.  But today, that's no longer the case.  Sure, it is more expensive, but the US, Canada and Western Europe have shown that the costs can be absorbed.

Not only that, but the costs of not doing so have been shown as well. Cleanup is not cheap. With some forms of pollution (air being one of them), it can be nearly impossible.

China's problem is having too many people who are also a part of a booming middle class who now want things like automobiles and the like. It's somewhat easier to forgive in the US where the population isn't as dense, but in China, the effects of everyone driving a car through stop-and-go city traffic become apparent much faster. That happens in US cities, but not to the same degree.

Tuna Sushi was off the menu long before Fukushima, thanks to mercury emissions from coal burning.  Salmon in the PNW though has less mercury than other salmon.

And China's East Coast is much, much closer to Fukushima than America's West Coast.

Again, we are not hurting because of the Fukushima disaster.

Uhm, we're downwind (prevailing winds) and down-ocean-current from Japan's east coast. China isn't. Straight-up as-the-crow-flies distance isn't what's important here.

China would actually be among the very last places in the Northern Hemisphere to be contaminated by Fukushima fallout, assuming it got that bad.

Read up on the situation at Reactor #4 before you write it off as fearmongering.
