It's interesting that it gives a higher penalty for people who do it when intoxicated.

If a sober person does it then the penalty stays the same.....i guess the reasoning is that when a sober person sucker punches someone it's being done in a much more safe manner.

simplicimus: So how many ways are there to kill a person with a single punch? Kidney, Trachea, what else?

unexpected uppercut to the nose is the easiest.

of course a completely unprepared punch to the stomach can have the same effect.

czetie: kg2095: There have been a lot of cases down here lately of drunken thugs attacking random strangers with a single punch to the head. The victim often dies from a brain hemmorage resulting from the impact of the punch or from their head hitting the ground when they fall.

How many is "a lot" or "often"? The story mentions one death in 2013 and one in 2012, and while those individual deaths are tragic, that doesn't seem like a good basis for sweeping changes to licensing laws or opening hours. So are there actually a lot more cases, or is this an instance of a showboating politician exploiting public fear?

Hard cases make bad law, as they used to say.

Not all of them result in death, some just result in serious brain injury. And you're right of course - a lot of the hysteria is media driven as violent crime is at record lows here as it is in most other western nations. Having said that, there is no way I would wander around Kings Cross at night. That's just asking for trouble.

stevarooni: Saners: Voluntary Manslaughter in NSW carries a 25 year maximum sentence but has no minimum as far as I can tell. This law sets a minimum at 8 years under these circumstances.

Mandatory minimums are generally a bad idea, in  the opinion of every sane individual who has ever looked into the issue.

Only if you're misunderstood.

Or a pawn in the game of life.

Mandatory minimums are generally a bad idea, in my opinion.  Enforce the laws that are on the books.

I thought they had laws against murder and manslaughter already?  :P

Like those stupid cell phone laws; if someone's driving distracted, that's already illegal!
