Vitter... Is he that Republican that was banging those prostitutes?  I mean, I don't have a problem with that per se, but if you're running on a Family Values platform that seems a little ..... inconsistent.

Yeah, it's amazing how if a Democrats get cause in a sex scandal (hell Wiener didn't even have sex) your political career is end but if your a Republican it's no problem.

Well, former Senator John Ensign is looking on longingly at the career of Senator Vitter. But he did dodge the federal charges from getting his family to pay off the husband of his mistress - at least for now.

Although the people of Louisiana don't have particularly high standards for their elected officials when they send someone to Washington they expect them to be THEIR whore.

Not spend taxpayers money on out of state prostitutes

The hypocrisy is the big issue with Vitter. I could give a shiat about infantilism otherwise.

that he got reelected last time came as a surprise to me. an unhappy one at that. the guy who ran against him was a well known and well liked democratic representative who had been reelected himself three times. Charlie had voted against obamacare and was as blue dog as any southern democrat. and he hammered vitter on vitter's hypocrisy of family values and  his stands on womens issues. vitters "womens outreach" staffer had been arrested and convicted of domestic battery.

there are times, and that was one of them, i weep for my adopted state.

As a transplant of a few years, it never ceases to amaze me the locals are vehemently right-wing despite plenty of reasons not to be. After Katrina, BP, etc and the screw-ups there, I can understand not trusting the government at all, but how that translates to voting Republican i will never comprehend.

It's up to the Duck Dynasty guys and their fan base.

A candidate they backed beat Gov. Jindal's handpicked choice in a recent U.S. Congressional race.

Those are all southeast Louisiana issues.  It's a different world once you get north of Baton Rouge.  Like Florida, the further north you go, the further south you get.

The diaper thing was debunked with Vitter. The Times-Picayune interviewed the call girls he frequented in New Orleans. Boring stuff. Nothing freaky. If that part had any veracity, someone would find these gals and sink him like the Titanic. That said, I don't want him as our governor. Apart from the fact that I've never liked him, it would be nice to see some new blood in the Governor's mansion, especially after Jindal has gone MIA and turned into a total dud.

Well, one of the girls is dead. A "suicide".

I lived in New Orleans for 3 years. When it came down to David Duke vs. Edwin Edwards in the final runoff for Governor, well, it kinda says it all. When a former Grand Wizard of the Klan is the GOP candidate, running against a crook's crook, it's hard to expect much better.

i understand that to a point since a good friend hails from minden and her family is derp personified. but her sister who lacks health insurance just got diagnosed with lung cancer.  all the "bill o'reilly said ... " isn't going to pay her hospital bills. and jindal stopping the medicaid expansion won't help her either.

i haven't ask her yet how she feels about obamacare now.

these presidential results from 2012 show what you are talking about. but st tammany where i live was 75% romney. and we are as southeast as you can get. and no i don't put out a yard sign, it just isn't worth it.

Yea. He's not the top of my list but people would have to be an idiot to vote for a Democrat at this point. It's what made me vote against Melancon last time despite him being an alright guy otherwise.

the seat in question is a senate seat not a house one. I never alleged melancon picked any pockets either. However, from Long to Edwards near everyone on his team did.

Isn't "faux populist political opportunist" an apt description for 80-90% of the political class? It's why Washington goes crazy when people actually have principles.

jaytkay: I'm sure a such a staunch independent was *this* close to voting for a Democrat.

I've never claimed to be an independent. That is a very distinct difference between me an 90% of Fark that tries to play coy about their political identity. I wouldn't vote for a Democrat for national office. Christ, read what I say instead of trying to go for a simple-minded rhetorical quip that you think would be amusing.

He ran against Vitter for the Federal Senate seat. That he'd vote for Reid was the chief reason why I voted for Vitter. Do I need to draw a picture?

Curious: with this comment you at least inferred that Melancon was picking pockets.

Not really. Those were separate paragraphs each stating specific things. If you assumed as much then you read too much into it.

Curious: you aren't a troll but you are a partisan hack.

On the Fark politics tab I'm not even in the top quintile of partisans. I'm probably the most partisan of the Republicans but there's what... 4...5 of them? That I don't buy the narrative unquestionably that Democrats state doesn't make me a partisan. I simply review the data then allow for spin from the source then run with my take on it. That I'm seldom surprised by political moves says a lot about how keen my political understanding of the major players is in actuality.

You wrote "vote for Reid as speaker".

You  meant Senate Majority Leader, not House Speaker. That's what people are picking on.
