So that video has:

a) no credits
b) no link to sources
c) a video player that cannot be muted or stopped or rewound or with any indication of how long it is or where it is in play and luckily for us all, it auto plays

Good Job Slate!

In the early hours of August 3rd, 1947, Reginald Brecht, one of the world's finest minds--who, as such, the bulk of mankind would never know because those who had enjoyed the fruits of his labors preferred things that way--created what he called 'synthetic flesh.'

The purpose of his latest invention, as Brecht originally perceived it, was meant to aid in the recuperation of burn victims, and perhaps, more boldly, to act as an 'independent and supplemental exo-dermis to augment the frailty of God's design.'

By the spring of 1948, the breakthrough was out of Brecht's hands. As with several other of his profound gifts to man, the military had secreted Brecht's research into 'further development.' Brecht, for his part, a man who could be counted on to always have too many irons in the fire, was not too put off and quickly moved onto his other work in [REDACTED], but that is quite another story.

Operation  Fish Scale was bold. So much so that even those brightest minds brought on board in its birthing stages were at first convinced they were being played the fool. 'This had to be a joke. A  bad joke.'
A submarine. A Gar Class. Three hundred and eight feet in length and twenty seven in beam, sheathed in 'skin.' Flesh and blood.  Skin. That was the concept, and by the winter, to their amazement and then as they laid claim to the accomplishment, by God, it had been done.

The few--those most important men and soon to be silenced 'workers' who had seen 'the fish' become reality--those lucky few who watched as the massive silver leviathan slipped her berth, they, to a man, and just one woman, gasped and more than a few shuddered as they troubled over their ingenuity...their success.

And she was a success. She ran fast. Faster than even had been projected. And silent, of course. That had, after all, been the point. And she ran deep, flesh and muscle augmenting the steel. The most subversive fish.
It was someplace over the Aleutian Trench, in waters forever deep cold and turning quickly to ink-waters that sink into places that man will never know-that she was inexplicably lost.

There are no accounts. No records. Not even the name of the boat. She will ever be a ghost with no name. After all, the highly classified project, from the men who dreamed it up, to those who must have died along with it--and Brecht, of course--they, and the thing took that them, they never existed.

Ellsworth Trough: Giant Subglacial Trench Discovered in Antarctica no video

Dr Ross concluded: "to me, this just goes to demonstrate how little we still know about the surface of our own planet. The discovery and exploration of hidden, previously-unknown landscapes is still possible and incredibly exciting, even now."

Well good for you Dr Ross, I'm glad you're happy. /snark

MrBallou: The headline was silly and unrelated to the content of the video, yet it was still 10x more informative than the video. I want my 1:27 back.

Linking to autoplaying 'news' videos with no written article should result in chemical castration for both subby and the article author.

If I am elected your president, I will make this a reality.

Sorry...wasn't trying to pull the wool over on anyone. Just a short story of mine that seemed so apropos to the thread.

This scares me.

I'm terrified of the fact that OP doesn't know the difference between Arctic and Antarctic, and that no one else has mentioned it yet.

Fark be slippin'.
