"I was wearing my blue overcoat with my neon reflective vest," said Gove. "I had my front and rear flashers on. I have no idea why he didn't see me."

Maybe because he was blind drunk?

How could he not tell he hit a guy when he hit the bicycle? Something strange is going on here. Even if he was drunk he should probably tell he hit something.

"He started freaking out: 'I'm going to jail, I'm going to jail.'"

Yes, yes you are.

I'm glad for the last paragraph reminding us of the similar incident a few years ago. I didn't remember it was from the same area. I should avoid bicycling in Wisconsin, or wear an explosive vest with a dead man switch if I do.

That's just a level of impaired driving that most non-insane people can't even imagine.  Not the "holy crap was that a cop, I may have touched the line" DUI but a "how am I still alive and operating this thing" DUI.

This driver must have been at least 3 to 4 times the legal limit.

Technically, he'd be infinity times the legal limit, since he's under 21 and the limit is 0.0 for this guy.

Well, technically it was a tricycle.  Maybe the guy was all "holy shiat, did I hit a bicycle too, or is my vision just super blurry?"

The Onion is prophetic: Technically, he'd be infinity times the legal limit, since he's under 21 and the limit is 0.0 for this guy.

I missed that; that's even more shocking since I associate that level of inebriation with decades of impairment under the belt.

He's lucky as hell to be alive.

Reminds me of the story where a woman hit a man who was embedded in the windshield, drove home, closed up the garage and left him to die.

Some people's brains just shut off when they panic and they go into a sort of autopilot mode and perform rote routines as though nothing was happening.

It might have been Ambien or other hypnotic drug. Sleep-driving has been known to happen with people using those pharmaceuticals.

My first instinct was to imagine what was going through cyclist head at the time, then it dawned on me it was obviously the windshield.

been hit by cars 3 times, not fun. once by a DWI driver, bounced off his Buick, broke the windshield, didnt go through though. Second time hit from behind by a truck, guy said I wasn't going fast enough, measured 31 in a 25 zone. 3rd time, an illegal in a small truck wanted to go into an apartment complex I was riding by, just decided to mash me up against the curb, then called cops and they said there was nothing they could do, starting my rant on if he wasn't here, none of this would have happened. Yet the cops found his truck parked in the parking lot, and a woman speaking spanish said he wasn't there, cops got him. o license, insurance, license, etc. I pressed for leaving the scene of an accident, but no.

More likely shock.

I'm really glad that all three times my sister was hit by a car while cycling (yes, really) none of the drivers were, well, that level of impaired, as far as I know.

The usefulness of helmet use  in reducing head injuries in bicycles is unproved. In fact, counter-intuitively, it looks like helmets make things worse.

And mandatory helmet use definitely reduces the number of bicyclists.

"HI, GUY."

2014-01-21 06:23:33 PM
A Wisconsin man who became lodged in the windshield of a car that struck him said he turned to the driver and said, "Hello, I'm the guy you hit on the bicycle."
The driver did not respond, but continued on, running a stop sign and hitting another vehicle before he arrived home, the cyclist, Steven Gove, told HTR Media about the Saturday incident
The man finally noticed Gove when he stopped the car outside his home.
"He looked at me and said 'Who are you? What are you doing in the car?'" Gove said. "He started freaking out: 'I'm going to jail, I'm going to jail.'"
The man then locked the car doors and went into his home. Gove, whose body had gone most of the way through the windshield, then pulled his knees and feet into the car.
"I righted myself and got out," he said. "I unlocked the passenger's side door and started walking down the street."

That driver MUST have been on drugs or something, because if not, then his response to the incident shows what must otherwise be a severe mental problem.
