(The New Republic)   Being invited on a Chinese TV show to play the wacky white guy? Weird. Being asked to dance to Beyonce while doing so? Weirder. Being told to get freaky on the dance floor with an eight-year-old? Weirdest   (newrepublic.com) divider line 19

If I'm going to go on Tee Vee and get freaky with an 8 year old, I'm certainly going to do a better job than *THAT*.
The ironic thing is that I'd probably never get to see my own performance.
My wife and I don't own any 8 year old Chinese girl children, because, frankly, we're better than you people.
I also don't own a TeeVee and I use a non-ironic rotary phone.
Pretty much King Sh*T of F*ck Island over here.

If you ever get caught in the sack, with a 16 year old, tell the cops, "It not what you think, we're from different worlds, so it's OK", and that should take care of everything.

In China, you watch CCTV. In Soviet Britain, CCTV watches you!

"Flip through the channels at any given moment and you'll see a predictable combination of World War II epics (Chinese good, Japanese bad), Korean soap operas, Korean-inspired Chinese soap operas, plus a slew of identical-looking talk/dating/talent shows, the most popular of which are Chinese copies of foreign programs"

Change Chinese to American, Japanese to German and Korean to Spanish.

Makes one wonder what's on German and Spanish tv.

From the Spanish shows I've seen, it's mostly people frowning and talking really fast, or newscasts with really hot women talking really fast about something.

German TV, I don't know that much about that, but, I'm figuring they have shows about Germans having picnics in Poland.  Oh yeah, and not mentioning the war.

I have seen German TV. H31N0US wasn't far off.

A common way for people on the bottom of the gaijin totem pole in Japan (English teachers) to supplement their income under the table is by acting.   A friend was similarly the the token white guy in commercials and such while illegally overstaying his tourist visa in Japan.   He eventually did return to Japan for a legitimate tech sector job for a number of years and is now back in the US.

Sounds like similar opportunities exist in China.

Never drink the Coke at the craft service table when working for Chinese TV.

I've noticed white people showing up in Chinese, Hong Kong, Taiwanese and Filipino variety/talent shows.  I would assume it's the same for other Asian countries.

It's really amusing for Asian audiences to see white people on their local shows.  It's even more amusing to see white people (and also black people as well- whatever is obviously not Asian) speak the local language.

Definitely the "white person-est dance" I've ever seen. Pretty funny to watch the guy dance though. Creepy to have a little girl sing THOSE lyrics. Pretty inappropriate unless the marrying age is 8 in your country...

So it's kinda like the equivalent of Engrish, then?
