Doesn't get much more racist than that.

Twitter, gold mine of intellectualism:
"Disgraceful!! Russian White Editor-In-Chief Poses On Naked Black Woman Chair on MLK day"

I'm pretty sure they don't celebrate that one in Russia.

I say we allow this. Think of all the new outlets for outrage as we can now chastise people for holidays they've never heard of.

I like this, the outrage of finding out that people didn't go to Easter mass in Israel, or the insensitive tax on Hanukkah candles in Iran....

I was expecting it to be a stylized figure of a woman made of black marble, ebony wood, jet, anthracite etc. but nope... too classy.

Year ago a buddy of mine had a girlfriend from Moscow. Her casual, matter of fact racism was surprising to me at the time, partly because my buddy was black. If you weren't as white as a muscovite or, I guess, one's boyfriend, you were inferior scum.

There's parts of the world where you can have exactly that. For a price, of course.

That is one ugly chair.  It would also be ugly if they changed the gender, skin color, age, and/or body shape.

Fake human heads don't belong on furniture.

2014-01-21 10:41:37 AM
I'm not debating the existence if racism or the tastelessness of the chair, but I do wonder what the reaction would've been if the chair was a depiction of a woman of another race.

I'm pretty sure it is beyond everyone's comprehension. Those who do claim to understand the value are impostors with a stake in it. An intellectual pyramid scheme have you.

I don't know, I can think of several people whose heads would probably look lovely on spikes hanging in my family room.

So there's a white chair and a black chair by the same artist. The black chair is racist but not the white chair. Okay, got it. Never mind that if anything, it is sexist, not racist as I don't see any chairs of men.

Are you offended because she is black, or because it is a woman, or because she is wearing boots, or are you just looking to be offended?

On my 27th birthday my frineds ended up picking up some russian chicks I was passed out on a balcony when we got back to my buddies condo. One of them dropped an Nbomb and damn near started a riot in there since there were quite a few black people.

Not sure if there's a decent comparison to be made due to the fact that it was published on MLK Day in the USA. Maybe if the same article was published with a white woman chair on Mothers Day?

Hard to tell if actual racism is depicted, if socialite cluelessness is depicted (seems like the chair is a piece of artwork and NOT meant to be sat upon), overall cluelessness (photographer taking the picture, socialite sitting on the artwork and publisher deciding to publish on MLK Day) or a really effective attempt to generate buzz by publishing something that would go viral on almost all social media within minutes of being published. Or a mix of all, plus a bunch more that I haven't thought of before my morning coffee.

Agreed. The implication that nobody would purchase a male version of this chair is misandry at its worst.

Wow. All that pre-coffee? I've had my coffee already and still had a hard time remembering how to even spell my fark handle.

You're probably right about the viral thing. Good call.

Two thoughts:

a.) Yeah, that is ridiculously racist.

b.) I would love to be introduced to the model who the chair was based on; preferably in the exact same position....

is there a lazyboy version where you pull the arm and the legs straighten out for comfort?

2014-01-21 11:36:01 AM
I actually don't see that as racist at all.  It's very obviously a fetish-themed chair and it looks like the only reason she didn't chose the 'caucasian' version is because it didn't match her table.

This is people as art, not people as anything inferior.

/but yes, people will always worry about racism when its another race.

No, but there is an aromatherapy version where you instead pull the finger.

A penance, Dasha Zhukova should have to pose as the chair, with Zoe Saldana sitting on her.
