Salt was trying to be Mission: Impossible without the brain cells.  They succeeded in that aspect but the movie sucked nonetheless.

Actually, I did too-mostly because the immensely talented-and 2013 Oscar Winner for Best Actor*-Chiwetel Ejiofor kept the otherwise preposterous plot from complete derailment. As long as he returns, I'm in.

I was skeptical as well about the POTA flick-until I watched it. It was superb despite James Franco's involvement. Check it out: I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Agreed. Also, it pretty much invalidates the later, weaker installments of the series (Escape onwards). And Andy Serkis is phenomenal providing the body movements for Ceasar. It's so good, it'll even wash your brain clean of the memory of the Tim Burton film.

And a better movie too

What is so surprising about this?  It made a lot of money and the ending pretty much said "sequel incoming".

"Rise of the Planet of the Apes" was definitely excellent.  And I've never seen any of the other PotA movies that had the NRA guy or Mark Wahlberg.  If they could continue what "Rise" started with, and not make it campy, then it's going to be fantastic.

As a biologist (here we go), I had some problems with the way they depicted the study.

(SPOILERS)

1.  Drug may or may not cause aggression?  Caesar would have been put down without anyone shedding a tear.  Or would you approve of scientists taking home animals exposed to experimental viruses because CUTE?
2.  Guy exposed to experimental virus?  Sure, let's send him home.  He'll call if he feels bad or contageousy.
3.  You tested illegally on your father?  Supercool, no legal or ethics violations there.  Not only do you keep your job, but I believe you wholeheartedly!
4.  How the hell did each of the tiny aerosol cans contain so much farking gas?
5. How the fark did the orangutan know how to reason (and communicate reasoned thoughts using sign language) before exposure?

Also, I felt more empathy for the pilot neighbor than I did for the intended protagonist.

Other than that, if I turned off my brain, it was fun watching the apes and stuff.

She looked like a tranny crackhead in Salt.

With someone is as skinny as that they just aren't at all believable as an action star at all. They so obviously wouldn't have the strength to hurt anyone. She could punch someone and they would just laugh it off grab her and break her limbs, one by one.

John Carter of Mars got that right. the leading lady had some meat on her bones. She looked like she actually might be able to land a blow with some force and not be knocked over by a stiff breeze. Like a sword fight with her (giggity) wouldn't just be you beating her sword arm aside with a stiff blow or two and cutting her down immediately as she would lack the strength necessary to fight you - nevermind a whole series of assailants. The story itself didn't interest me (sorry, but Edgar Rice Burroughs just doesn't do it for me whatsoever...), but they most certainly got that part right.

If a female action star looks like a bulimic fashion model I may want to fark her, but it just looks stupid as hell to pretend like she could take on enemies physically. I just can't get over it. Hollywood needs to cast their female action stars with some meat on them.

Jolie was 20 pounds too light in "Salt". The sheer amount of ass kicking a skinny 5'6" chick managed to hand out was amazing. Having her at "Tomb Raider" weight might have made things just a little better.
