The ad caused a stir among English-language users of social media in Japan.

I thought it was funny, but Japan and China do have a severe problem with racism.  I lived there in several areas from 98-04 and the racial homogeny, particularly in Japan, lends itself towards racism that would be considered harsh in Alabama circa 1920.  And that's just against black people.  Every other ethnic group is subject to some form of it, with the "lesser" asian ethnicities getting the worst of it.  My wife's paralegal was from Laos and stores in Hong Kong would ask her to leave when she came in.  And HK was by far the most progressive city as far as tolerating other ethnicities.

We didn't bother finding out how it was received by Japanese-language users of social media in Japan.  That would be too difficult.

"But we have received opinions different from the message that we wished to convey," he said.

"We will modify part of the advertisement and will release the second version soon."

Earlier, an ANA spokeswoman acknowledged the carrier "has received calls from customers, mostly foreigners, complaining about the ad."

In other words: we're sorry you gaijin decided to be offended.

Yeah that's racist. It only has the image of a Japanese guy trying to be a white guy. The other guy should have worn black face, curly hair, big pouty lips, and flat nose. With those two together, one can say that the commercial also thinks of the black people in the west. Service for all!

He complains loudly that he wishes that 30 year old Japanese women showed a fraction of the interest and fascination of the contents of his shorts that 13 year old Japanese boys seem to.

That said he does go through a couple girlfriends, he (and his white American friends also in the JET program) definitely had success at bars, and eventually gets married to one of those girlfriends. Of course, that also leads to the story of "The Octopus" (AKA a bedroom event that lands him in the ER) and his attempts to purchase condoms (with the comment "That brand has a freaking horse on the box. I'm just paranoid I'll get home, open the box, and find trash bags inside.")

Well, it was funny when Toshiba first did it. That raised a fuss with some western expats in Japan - which is why All Nippon did the same think in solidarity with Toshiba as a passive-aggressive "fark you" to to the offended expats.

That doubling down raised it from "funny" to "hilarious".

Racism outside the West can be pretty overt. For a while I was in the UAE and typical job postings included desired sex, nationality, age and marital status of potential applicants - e.g. "Senior engineer [job description] prefer male, age 40-45, British or American" or "Executive assistant, seeking well presented female, preferably Filipina, 18-23, no Indians".

This isn't to say the West has eliminated racism, just that folks in the West tend  to put a more polite face on it and not say things out loud.

CSB:  My mom knew a Hong Kong woman a long time ago who paid $$$ for plastic surgery to make her nose look Caucasian....

Racism accusations are definitely overused. See Politics tab, McCutcheon & Hamner ad, Nippon Airways, Volkswagen Jamaican ad, black ranger, yellow ranger, etc. These may play off stereotypes & prejudices but I wouldn't call them racist. And we all have prejudices. Highly homogenous societies probably moreso. They only know "others" by how their media portrays them. In much of the world too, tribal / religious ties and rules remain. See Sunni / shiate, Hutu / Tutsi, etc.

I kind of think (and this is like, just my opinion, man) we're seeing a relatively recent resurgence in nationalism - in previous decades countries sought to emulate western lifestyle and norms - I have a photo album of my grandfather as a big band trumpet player, even played with Benny Goodman in China I'm told... but it seems that many places are reverting to a nationalistic streak and cultural identity. Isn't Scotland on the verge of splitting with England again?

America is a pretty mild society by comparison but it can always be better.

Toshiba didn't "first do it".  That is literally how white people are always represented in Japan, since forever ago. Big nose, blond hair (and sometimes big fake white teeth because Americans), and usually crass and ignorant.

There was one particular comedy duo and that was their entire schtick - spoofing Brenda and Dylan from Beverly Hills 90210.

Old old news.  I can't say it ever bothered me when I lived there.
