The ad caused a stir among English-language users of social media in Japan.

What's Japanese for "concern troll"?

I thought it was funny, but Japan and China do have a severe problem with racism.  I lived there in several areas from 98-04 and the racial homogeny, particularly in Japan, lends itself towards racism that would be considered harsh in Alabama circa 1920.  And that's just against black people.  Every other ethnic group is subject to some form of it, with the "lesser" asian ethnicities getting the worst of it.  My wife's paralegal was from Laos and stores in Hong Kong would ask her to leave when she came in.  And HK was by far the most progressive city as far as tolerating other ethnicities.

We didn't bother finding out how it was received by Japanese-language users of social media in Japan.  That would be too difficult.

"But we have received opinions different from the message that we wished to convey," he said.

"We will modify part of the advertisement and will release the second version soon."

Earlier, an ANA spokeswoman acknowledged the carrier "has received calls from customers, mostly foreigners, complaining about the ad."

In other words: we're sorry you gaijin decided to be offended.

Fake big nose? Amateurs. They should have used matchsticks to make their eyes rounder.

I had no idea about this./

Is this supposed to be racist against Japanese people or white people? I don't really see it either way.

Its offensive to people who look for things to be offended about.

The word 'racist' is so overused, it's almost lost all meaning.

Simply pointing out or mentioning racial differences is not racism.

His nose is big, but he's not ashamed, It's big like a pickle, and he's still getting paid.

I've got a pretty big nose, I can't deny. It would probably be top 5% in Japan.

It's a typical East Asian screw-up. Remember the Holocaust-themed restaurant in Taiwan? They just don't get it sometimes.

Good thing they admit that it's not the size of the nose that makes the difference.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to the new version made with stuffed briefs.

2014-01-21 06:57:57 AM
Yeah that's racist. It only has the image of a Japanese guy trying to be a white guy. The other guy should have worn black face, curly hair, big pouty lips, and flat nose. With those two together, one can say that the commercial also thinks of the black people in the west. Service for all!

2014-01-21 06:59:17 AM
It's not racism, it's stereotyping with some mixed in per-judice. No where do they say that Japanese/Asians are superior to Non-japanese.

2014-01-21 07:20:01 AM
I think, as a member of the race that is seemingly the victim of racism, that people should just get a sense of humour.

Yes it`s probably racist but so what?

Really. So what?

2014-01-21 07:21:49 AM

spagunk: o where do they say that Japanese/Asians are superior to Non-japanese.

Not in the commercial, anyway. I guarantee they say that everywhere else.

Meanwhile, us Aussies are more cross culturally sensitive...

The "Tracy" in the song refers to cyclone Tracy. Ie, Tojo never made it to Darwin, but Tracy sure did.

Ever read GaijinSmash? Thanks to exposure to Western stereotypes the author (a black man) had to spend his days as a JET exchange teacher fighting off attempts by middle schoolers trying to grope him. It is hilarious.

Hahahaha. They think Japan will change their culture for them. Pffft.
Sorry, English teachers, there's no such thing as "Japanese Guilt". Whites are the only ones that will destroy themselves to appease others. When you're in Japan, you do as the Japanese.

Japan is racially homogeneous.
Then, again, so is West Virginia.

More specifically, West Virginia is genetically homogeneous, so the racial aspect is implicit.

He complains loudly that he wishes that 30 year old Japanese women showed a fraction of the interest and fascination of the contents of his shorts that 13 year old Japanese boys seem to.

That said he does go through a couple girlfriends, he (and his white American friends also in the JET program) definitely had success at bars, and eventually gets married to one of those girlfriends. Of course, that also leads to the story of "The Octopus" (AKA a bedroom event that lands him in the ER) and his attempts to purchase condoms (with the comment "That brand has a freaking horse on the box. I'm just paranoid I'll get home, open the box, and find trash bags inside.")

Well, it was funny when Toshiba first did it. That raised a fuss with some western expats in Japan - which is why All Nippon did the same think in solidarity with Toshiba as a passive-aggressive "fark you" to to the offended expats.

That doubling down raised it from "funny" to "hilarious".
