"Apparently the Glocks don't have the trigger safety that they should have."

So it's all Glock's fault. Got it.

I don't even own a gun. I've shot 4 guns in my entire life. And even I know more about gun safety than this idiot.
"I was working third shift as a captain. I was unloading (the gun) to take it to the gunsmith and I didn't drop the barrel to see if there was (a bullet) in the chamber," Counceller said. "The shot hit my hand. That one really hurt."

That's from the first time he shot himself.

Most of us are fairly successful with unloading into a tissue, sock or old dirty towel before we go out.  Maybe he could try that, I know it's saved me from shooting myself, though sometimes it doesn't work because when I wake up I can tell I shot off in the night in my dreams.

"I need to pay more attention," Counceller said. "I know what the dangers are. It was pure carelessness on my part."

Woah... what?! He's taking responsibility for his own negligence? No way...

Wait, whew. Someone else has got his back on this one. I knew it had to be the gun's fault somehow or another.

Only the police should have guns!

But, seriously, Glocks and their various imitators have been around for 30 years.  It's not that hard to rack the slide back and check it without NDing.  Glocks are like the AK of the pistol world, so simple a child (or cop) can operate it.

I only know shotguns. But I am better with a pistol than this sheriff is.

And Glocks do have a trigger safety, it's the only safety they have (if you want to even call it that).  What he meant to say was they should have a grip or thumb safety, and what he really meant to say was that Glocks are too dangerous for me, I should have a Springfield XD or S&W M&P.

How exactly does your brain work that reading an article about a cop shooting himself, you instantly think of the zimmerman case? I mean honestly, the fark does your thought process work. Walk us through this one.

Actually, the glock has three internal safeties, and a smaller trigger like device fixed to the main trigger that prevents the gun from firing, unless you use a correct trigger pull.  They're actually extremely safe.  Unless you are not practicing trigger discipline.

Or a single action revolver with a hammer block. You have to really want to make that one go off to make it go off.

In any case, doing something like that is a show of ignorance, but fessing up to it afterwards without coercion is a show of character. All things being equal, I'd vote for the guy over the others, and I've never even heard of that guy. Or the others. I'd rather have a good, honest Barney Fife than any cop of any competence level that might deal dirty. Immediately blaming himself for it was the best thing he could have ever done, in my opinion.

2014-01-20 08:46:47 PM
You'd think that someone who has already negligently shot himself before would be more careful handling a loaded gun, even taking into account he's a cop.

Glock striker fired weapons have a design flaw.  The slide can NOT be removed unless the trigger is pulled, and the slide released. Unfortunately, (Or fortunately, depending on your point of view) this action can fire off a round that is still in the chamber.  Pulling the trigger is REQUIRED in the take-down.

Other striker fired weapons can be disassembled by activating a "disengage". This can be reached by opening the slide, and operating a lever. The act of opening a slide provides an extra layer of stupidproofing that glock lacks.

This is why you should never buy a firearm that does not have a manual safety, people.

You walk us through it. Lotta outrage over one comment. One article. Hey, I got it. Why don't you walk me through your thought process of why you should be so angry over comments on a site like Fark, which doesn't take itself seriously? Or don't because it doesn't matter. Nothing is wrong with me, it's you and the other guy taking things way too seriously.

It's just a comment board. You win no prize for whatever it is you want to prove. Sorry.

My carry gun is a Glock 21 but the fact that it's a Glock doesn't matter. I taught myself to cover the trigger guard with my thumb and index finger. Using my thumb helps facilitate a safe, accurate return to holster. Took a lot of practice. You can ND nearly any pistol if you're careless.

I'm assuming the mayor is unaware of the nefarious history of the Walther PPK. And anything else weapon related.

I have an FNS-9MM semi-auto. It has one safety. That's all it needs if you aren't a moron. Really, that's all any firearm needs if you follow trigger discipline.
