"Enjoy your Palestinian blood cocktails," the left-wing reporter said to the vodka drinkers.

Bullshiat. I live in Somerville MA, and my soda stream came from an apartment of academics, and artists in Harvard farking Square, and no one has ever said anything like that.

One person we know doesn't have one because he doesn't like the company's politics, but no one I have ever met- and I was once in a vegan lesbian book club with people who used their own menstrwl blood as plant fertilizer- would say such a ducking thing.

SodaStream is an Israeli company with a manufacturing plant in occupied territory in the West Bank, a fact that enrages a politically informed, far-left segment of the liberal-yuppie demographic the product is marketed to.

Who then get so mad they blog about it on their handcrafted artisan-probably-Navajo-made iPads which are totally not made by slave labor in the far east.

My wife likes it, and during the holidays it works great to make healthy fizzy drinks for the kids.

Bought an adapter so I could use a 5lb CO2 bottle. No, not because of the Israeli contention. Nope, it's just cheaper to use the machine. Couple bucks of brass, a new bottle from the local bulk distributor, and refills are a couple bucks in a regular soda CO2 bottle. The same kind of container you'd get for a small home soda dispenser.

I looked into getting one a while back, my conclusion was it was way more expensive than buying soda in 2 liter bottles. Around here Coke goes on sale regularly at $1.25 - $1.50 and store brand typically sell for $0.89. The problem with soda stream is, you're not getting name brand soda so it's more appropriately compared to store brands. The thing is, you have to buy the syrup, CO2 and even the plastic bottles from them.

I drink diet Coke but recently I've been buying Walmart's Sams Choice diet cola, it's not exactly Coke but for 89 cents I'll live with it.

I only use the "Sparkling Naturals" line of Sodastream syrups or the Torani brand ones with real sugar. I never liked the Sucralose in the regular Sodastream syrups. If you're into diet, it might be for you.

And yes, I like my Sodastream very much. Using the SN Country Time lemonade syrup, I can either low-carb it to make a replica of Rondo, or full carb fizz to make it a Lemmy.

www.gunaxin.comwww.sodapopstop.com

Just keep in mind that the syrup can run about $6 - $10 for about 6 1-liter units of soda, and there's the gas cannisters of c02 to buy (fortunately, most stores that carry the gas cylinders will swap them out for half the regular price for a new full tank).

In other words, if you're a Super fat Ass that guzzles buckets of soda all day, this will get expensive. But if you only want soda once in a while, this is good. You really won't even need the syrup if all you want is sparkling water with some lemon juice in it. A little plastic lemon of juice is only what? Two bucks?

This kind of crap is for people with absolutely nothing to do. You can buy generic store-brand club soda at any grocery store for pennies per glass. I was actually exposed to this machine for the very first time this weekend, while visiting some friends. Before yesterday I had no idea a magical machine such as that existed, and I was startled to see it pop up here on Fark the day after. Two points:

First of all, screw you subby! I got all nervous as I clicked the link because I drank a metric shiat-ton of that stuff over the weekend, and I though this was some health-risk thing. Well-played, bravo, all that jazz, but seriously, what the hell?

Secondly, in response to TFA, good! Grumpy cat-level good! I never feel really fulfilled by small convienence appliances until I know they were made at the suffering of others, strengthened by the tears of the oppressed! I was rather meh about the thing until I read this, but now it is on my must-buy list!

Diet coke, diet dew and diet dr pepper are OK.

I have one and I love it. The biggest issue is the initial cost. You can get around that by snagging an old machine plus a couple of empty bottles for $30 or so on Amazon. Take the canisters into a Bed Bath and Beyond to swap them out for about $25 (50-60 liters of carbonation) each. Then buy the individual flavors that you want. Around Memorial Day (start of wedding season), BB&B usually does a tasting demo with Best Buy. Ask the sales people when the rep last came in and estimate about 6-8 months between visits. If you get there and it's a low crowd, you can ask for some diet flavors to give a go.

I used to work in a home housewares/kitchen gadget store and we sold those things. I was damn good at selling/demoing the farkers.

The pros are it's easy to use and extremely simple if you're not picky about taste.
The cons are long term necessity to begin to see your (very small) return on investment and non-dishwasher safe bottles. Neither are deal breakers.

Mixing various flavors (like orange and cream soda or the grape kool aid + diet lemon lime) get some pretty good results. I found that diet lemon lime is basically sprite and it mixes well with any "fruit" flavor. The regular cola isn't bad, but the large bottle "natural" cola (unprocessed cane sugar rather than processed cane sugar - thus requiring more syrup is pretty damn close to Coca Cola. I like mine, and treat it like a great toy, but I'm a fat guy with a sugar vice.

Actually displacing them physically or "building on unoccupied land ceded to the Palestinian Authority that might one day be built upon by Palestinians". I mean the second is still a dick move, but there's a massive gulf between that and bulldozing buildings with babies inside or whatever. It's been a few years since the Israelis decided to plow down a neighborhood.

Really? I thought they were CO2 bubbles.

But seriously, take my wife. Please! (rimshot)

OK. So SodaStream is an Israeli company.

And Malcolm in the Middle was produced by a company owned by an Israeli arms dealer who worked closely with apartheid South Africa and other shady characters. (You may not have known that.) But I love Katy Segal's voice (aka Leila of Futurama).

As much as I despise knee-jerk support for Israel, I am prepared to acknowledge they have a right to exist as much as the Palestinians do. Perhaps not as a helot military occupation like Ancient Sparta or not-so-ancient Twentieth Century Apartheid White South Africa, but as part of a two-state solution, yes.

Seeing as the adjective "blood" applies to the products of slave labour, looting, rape, torture, genocide, and murder in failed states in Africa, I think it might be over-blown or misapplied to a factory in the West Bank. I know those Israeli bastards are cunning and wicked, but they aren't forcing starving homosexual sex slaves to make designer gowns at bayonet point. That would be the Russians. (I keed, I keed, because I love.)

Is the logic of boycotting SodaStream the same as the logic of boycotting blood diamonds from the Congo or Sun City? Do the facts support this logic?

The SodaStream plant in the West Bank is one of 20 around the world, so the impact of the boycott on Paletinanian workers is likely to be slight. The old "but South African blacks depend on those jobs" argument is feeble in such a case, since there are 19 non-victims (presumably) for every supposed victim of Israeli capitalism.

(I'm getting my facts from Alarabiya.net:  http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/2014/01/21/Boycott-of-Israel-s-S o daStream-may-affect-Palestinian-workers.html ).

There are 900 Palestinians employed at the West Bank plant.

The company produced a video that claims that the employees have relatively high pay (four times that available elsewhere in the West Bank) and health and social benefits, etc. An anonymous employee is quoted as saying the Palestinian workers feel like slaves and occupied people.

Who knows? I'm guessing the Israeli propaganda at least gets its numbers and facts straight. But gilded chains are still chains, so what are you going to do?

Scarlett Johansson , who is also a spokesperson for Oxfam, is "media ambassador" for the company and thus has come under criticism by the boycotters.

While I was a critic of the South Africa regime and its supporters, I don't see that boycotts are a very delicate or useful tool for protest. Too many people like a good product at a good price and even an effective boycott is a bit scattershot. On the other hands, boycotts do get media attention and sometimes press on the economic levers of even powerful and rich targets. The original Boycott was an absentee landlord in Ireland whose tenants refused to pay rents. He's famously infamous so boycotts must sometimes accomplish something.

But here's a question:  are there any substitutes for the product in question? Indubitably: Coca Cola and Pepsi, for example. Unless you are boycotting them and all their sister companies. You should probably be boycotting bottled water in general. The poor are forced to pay through the nose for clean potable water while the rich get it almost free through every tap in their massive monster homes. Water is cheap--unless you are poor, in which case it is Unobtanium.

Just thinking out loud folks. I'm not going to tell you what to do, although donations would be welcome at many of the great humanitarian and developmental aid organizations in this crazy, sad, mixed-up confusing world.

So instead of having a CO2 canister that tucks neatly into the machine, you have to have that large ugly gray monstrosity sitting along side the machine on your counter top or drill a hole through the counter top or wall or whatever to store it elsewhere. All to save a penny or two on a liter of home made soda. Real genius plan.

The excellent Ethiopian coffee has certainly benefited from the introduction of Italian coffee-making machines. There's one old train line from Addis to Harar and it's derelict. It does pay itself back over the VERY VERY VERY long term if you use the official merch (much more so if you modify it with an expanded tank and CO2 nozzle - which I also have.)

A fill up at Dicks gets about 40 liters for $5 with a 12oz paintball tank. $0.125 per liter. A sodastream brand syrup costs about $5 and gets 8-9 liters of flavoring out of it. Roughly half the price of conventional bottles (assuming $1.25 per 1 liter bottle at the grocery store) with far less trash or recycling built up. The biggest thing is not having to carry packs of drinks inside.

I use mine and love it, but the investment has to be paired with patience. Jumping back and forth between vending machines, fast food cola, and sodastream will offset any gains you might have made. But do not buy the kits in the store unless you can get an absolute steal on the prices. I worked in a store and snagged a floor demo model as it was hitting clearance. No flavor packs and a coupon for a free refill since I bought the floor model with a rebate for less than $60.

If you're buying it because boys like toys, then have at it. If you want to save serious money with it, take the $60 and buy some CFLs/window caulk for your home.

That proprietary fitting would NOT be that hard to take off of a SodaStream refill bottle, drill out if necessary, then tap with a pipe thread tap. Then, $40 for a CO2 regulator from Harbor freight, some assorted brass fittings and high pressure hose, and a CO2 tank from there as well, and you have your own CO2 source for a good bit less than that company.

So $0.13 per liter for the CO2 and $0.63 per liter for the syrup comes to $0.75 per liter, or $1.50 per 2 liter. Around here anyway, Coke and Pepsi regularly put their 2 liters on sale for $1.25 - $1.50 and store brands (which are more comparable in taste) sell at regular price for $0.85 - $0.95 per 2 liter. So where exactly is this savings coming from?

Difficulty: I only drink diet soda and find most of them to taste nasty.

Diet coke, diet dew and diet dr pepper are OK.

I second this assessment. While the sugar (or worse yet the substitutes) is bad, the carbonation is horrible for your teeth. The convenience of unlimited soda made me decide to not buy one.

/I only see them advertised on hannity and bed bath and beyond.   I haven't seen any liberal targeted advertising.

Another would be to say "Get the fark out of my home RIGHT NOW, you asshole. I invite you to my party and this is how you see fit to behave?  Take your farking flat-ass water and pour it up your ass, you rude piece of shiat."

AverageAmericanGuy: Some people just don't like it when Israel is involved in something. These people are typically anti-Semites, but I'll give these libs the benefit of the doubt and just refer to them as anti-Zionists (IOW, anti-Semites).

It is possible that people look upon Israel in the same manner that they looked upon South Africa. It has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with the military dictatorship of a regional minority group over the majority.

2014-01-20 11:53:01 PM
And, here's my own take on all this crapola:

If it's Not About the Jews... - ©2014 by Trevor Patrick

The keffiyeh-wearing activists all say:
that Anti-Zionism is not Anti-Semitism,
and that antipathy towards Israel,
is not REALLY about the Jews...

It's about the 'Illegitimate, Apartheid State',
that 'occupies' the entirety of Palestine,
and that ancient hatreds and blood-libels,
aren't the things that are shaping their views.

They say that their overarching care,
is for people living as prisoners in their own, stolen homeland,
and in ensuring that 'silenced' voices
are finally, at long last heard-

but the mounting inconsistencies in their message,
in talk as well as in deed,
are making some folks realise,
that their actions belie their words.

Because if it's not about the Jews,
why is Palestine such a cause-celebre,
when there's dozens of OTHER nations,
whose rightful citizens live as slaves?

And why then is Israel called an 'illegitimate' entity,
even though it was recognised by the UN,
and the vast majority of the world's nations:
most of them in 1948?

And if it's not about the Jews,
why do the activists insist on referring
to Jerusalem as 'Al Quds',
rather than using its proper, 5,000 year-old historical name?

If it's not about the Jews,
and it's all about the oppressed Palestinians,
what about the ones living in camps in neighbouring nations:
generations born on foreign soil,
but never allowed basic rights, citizenship,
or much less, a sense of place?

If it's not about the Jews,
why is there a double standard for the Israelis,
where protecting their safety
is called an act of genocide?

But every attack by Palestinians,
that succeeds in killing Israelis,
no matter what the context,
is ALWAYS justified?

Because if it was truly not about the Jews,
the activists would see the real truth,
that the BIGGEST victimisation of the Palestinians
is not from Israel-

but rather from their own fanatical leadership,
who don't want peace, but want every Jew dead,
and from all the other Arab nations
that use them as bargaining chips and pawns.

And if it's not about the Jews,
then maybe you should ask yourself:
can you stare in the mirror, and look yourself in the eyes-

when wherever you happen to live,
you're standing on land
that often YOUR ancestors
were the ones that seized and occupied?

And if it's not about the Jews,
would you live by your own standards,
and say that when the bus you're riding on is blown up,
you deserved to die-

that you have no intrinsic right to protect yourself,
in the land you've known from birth,
because your very citizenship
is based upon a lie?

If it's not about the Jews,
why then is Israel hated more
than any other so-called 'occupying power',
on the face of the Earth?

For example, no one's given a shiat since 1974,
about occupied Northern Cyprus:
A so-called 'country' that is recognised
by no one, but the occupying Turks.

And it's ALSO no longer trendy
unless you're Richard Gere,
to talk about China's continuing occupation
and cultural despoliation of Tibet;

because, after all, it wasn't dirty Jew-Gold,
that financed the forced 'liberation' of Lhasa,
and the Tibetans don't strap suicide bombs to their children,
or murder Chinese families in their beds.

But the Chinese occupiers
have single-handedly wiped-out
the centuries-old tradition of the Panchen Lama,
and will do the same to the Dalai Lama,
on the day he finally drops dead.

And if it's not about the Jews,
why am I supposed to boycott, divest and sanction against Soda-Stream,
but I'm crazy if I do the same against other companies,
whose nations have demonstrably occupied foreign territory,
and treat the people they've oppressed far worse yet?

Likewise, every African horror story,
that captures the public attention
for all of five minutes,
but then disappears like smoke,
as all other stories about oppressed brown people
so invariably do...

But Palestine has dominated the discourse,
and WILL continue to do so until Israel is destroyed,
because the plain and simple truth
is that it's ALWAYS been about the Jews.

TheGogmagog: I second this assessment. While the sugar (or worse yet the substitutes) is bad, the carbonation is horrible for your teeth.

Nope.

The reason  most carbonated beverages are bad for your teeth is that they contain natural or artificial sweeteners which promote salivation, or they are flavored with their own enamel-damaging acidic compounds.

A carbonated water with the same pH as a flat water would have a negligible difference on dental health.

Really good alternative flavor source

http://pittsburghsodapop.com

So instead of having a CO2 canister that tucks neatly into the machine, you have to have that large ugly gray monstrosity sitting along side the machine on your counter top or drill a hole through the counter top or wall or whatever to store it elsewhere. All to save a penny or two on a liter of home made soda. Real genius plan.

I have mine hidden in the bar, but if you want it sitting on the counter more power to you.

Snarcoleptic_Hoosier: Forbidden Doughnut: Snarcoleptic_Hoosier: The regular cola isn't bad, but the large bottle "natural" cola (unprocessed cane sugar rather than processed cane sugar - thus requiring more syrup is pretty damn close to Coca Cola. I like mine, and treat it like a great toy, but I'm a fat guy with a sugar vice.

How does the cost/oz. really compare to Coca-Cola or Pepsi? I'm not a big soda drinker, but I do like my Pepsi Throwback, and if that taste could be perfectly replicated for a much cheaper price, I'd be interested....

/ just not sure if the initial investment would be worth it...

I picked mine up around xmas, for me it was more about options, I like soda, but I'm diabetic and have to stick to the diet stuff, which, unless you want to stick with diet coke, diet pepsi, and diet Dr.P, can be hard to find stuff that tastes moderately drinkable..  I have a few of the sodastream brand flavorings, tring to find what's decent, but I like the ability to mix, I've used the water flavoring in the small bottles (Mio and the like) to decent effect with it, makes for some variety.

As for the controversy, the Israelis and the Palestinians have been dicking each other over forever, and the whole region seems like it's been one war zone or another for centuries.  Frankly, where the factory is actually located seems pretty damned trivial when compared to that.  I'm amazed people can actually get any business done there..more power to 'em...

2014-01-21 02:17:02 AM
I saw that thing when it hit the market and thought 'cool', since I like seltzer water and from time to time, mix different flavors of soda to make new, interesting ones.

I didn't know where it was made and didn't give a shiat, figuring it was by an American company who outsourced the majority of its products to China anyhow.

You used to be able to buy these seltzer makers, which you filled with water, screwed in an easily obtainable Co2 cartridge, of which there were plenty everywhere since many pellet and BB guns for kids were powered by them and they were dirt cheap. Some companies even made seltzer water, sold in big, glass bottles, which tasted much better than the commercially produced versions in plastic or aluminum. (Seltzer Water and Club Soda.)

Publix once came out with a plastic, quart sized bottle, with a trigger, spritzer head. You squirted the stuff in a glass like they used to in the old movies of the 40s and 50s. Though, it wasn't reusable.

Then I read the specs on the machine, discovering that it wasn't cheap. (Average price, $100.00.) My folks used to buy metal containers that used CO2 cartridges to make whipped cream, for $10. Then I noticed that the CO2 cylinders were custom designed for the thing, meaning you had to send them back for refilling and couldn't just go out and buy some inexpensive pellet gun CO2 cylinders and screw one in.

They weren't cheap either. Nor were the flavor syrups.

I recalled soda jerks back when I was a kid, making delicious cold drinks by squirting a few shots of flavored syrup into a thick, tall glass, adding a shot of pure seltzer, mixing it a bit, adding ice, then more seltzer and presenting you with a tasty' fizzing soda. If you knew the guy, he'd add in a bit of extra syrup for free to give you an even better tasting soda.

In fact, everything about SodaStream is expensive, including extra soda bottles.

I mourned the passing of the era of the plentiful and dirt cheap CO2 cartridges, now becoming harder to find since folks get hysterical if little Johnny has a gas powered BB gun.

I read where one of the last of the big, locally made and home delivered seltzer water plants, served up in big glass jugs, was closing due to folks buying the cheaper, less tasty, plastic wrapped store versions.

We used to joke about cheap krap being made in Japan, but now they produce things like jeeps which you can drive off 100 foot cliff and, if you survive, start the thing up and wobble away. Now, we joke about China churning out krappy merchandise.

At least Japan didn't seem to try and poison us by shipping over cheap things made with contaminated water, lead paint, grown in human fecal material or cut with fillers not meant to be consumed by humans. China seems to be trying to get rid of its massive pollution by shipping it out in goods to the US.

I don't care where the thing is made. I just care that it's over priced.

brantgoose: Really?

Wtf does Malcolm in the Middle have to do with Katie Segal or Futurama?

This exact same product, was available for sale in 1987 under the name Soda mistic, it was sold kind of like an Amway product, people were recruited to sell it, and of course they had to buy their sales model at 300.00 a pop, then they sold it to their friends and family. It was only around a couple of years before going pfffft. It amuses me to see people talking about it now as if it was just invented.

Nogale: And how many Palestinians will be thrown out of work if the plant closes?

I feel uptight on a Saturday night
Nine o' clock, the radio's the only light
I hear my song and it pulls me through
Comes on strong, tells me what I got to do
I got to
Get up
Everybody's gonna move their feet
Get down
Everybody's gonna leave their seat
You gotta lose your mind in Detroit Rock City
Get up
Everybody's gonna move their feet
Get down
Everybody's gonna leave their seat

LaughingRadish: I get the same irritation from the term "homophobia", which my mind parses into "fear of people".

It should parse into "fear of the same". Greek homo, not Latin homo.

pro-kas-ti-nator: This exact same product, was available for sale in 1987 under the name Soda mistic,

According to Wikipedia, this exact same product first went on sale to the general public in certain markets in 1955.

It's an icon of British 70s/80s kitsch, though; seems like everyone in the UK had one back then.

Rik01: I saw that thing when it hit the market and thought 'cool', since I like seltzer water and from time to time, mix different flavors of soda to make new, interesting ones.

Whip cream uses nitrous oxide cartridges, not carbon dioxide.

Really good alternative flavor source

So instead of having a CO2 canister that tucks neatly into the machine, you have to have that large ugly gray monstrosity sitting along side the machine on your counter top or drill a hole through the counter top or wall or whatever to store it elsewhere. All to save a penny or two on a liter of home made soda. Real genius plan.

It's not to save money, it's to save their broken souls.

Blame the Israelites for grinding Palestinian bones to release the CO2 that Allah stores there for the Caliphate.

I modified mine to take standard CO2 containers. One advantage of being an engineer who knows his way around a machine shop without getting himself killed.

//customizable, lighter on the syrup, and now made with the blood of Palestinians, huzzah!

An engineer who knows his way around a machine shop is a very rare creature indeed.   About 95% of them that I've met think we use pixie magic to make the products they design.

Mrbogey: BunkoSquad: SodaStream is an Israeli company with a manufacturing plant in occupied territory in the West Bank, a fact that enrages a politically informed, far-left segment of the liberal-yuppie demographic the product is marketed to.

Who then get so mad they blog about it on their handcrafted artisan-probably-Navajo-made iPads which are totally not made by slave labor in the far east.

Because they're really not politically informed. A lot of folks put up a good show to impress others.

jst3p: I have been thinking of buying one, any farkers want to say yea or nay?

Difficulty: I only drink diet soda and find most of them to taste nasty.

Diet coke, diet dew and diet dr pepper are OK.

I have a SodaStream and their diet cola syrup is less than spectacular. I found a place in Toronto where you can get gallon jugs fo brand name syrup for reasonable prices, So I just keep the jug iof Diet Coke syrup n the fridge and top up my syrup bottle for day-to-day carbonating as needed.

My favorite (although i don't get to enjoy it very often any more. Thanks diabeetus) is Tahiti Treat.  use about 1.5-2x the recommended syrup amount for a really fruity, sweet soda.

My wife bought me one for Christmas about three years ago because I was spending $2.50-$3.00 at least every two weeks on a 12 pack of the Kroger-brand sparkling water.   I'm still using the SodaStream.   Our tap water is excellent already, plus we have an under-the-sink filtration system.  I saw the SodaStream flavors as a novelty, and usually just drink the water the same way as I did before: plain, with freshly squeezed fruit juice, or add a few drops from a "water enhancer" (e.g., Mio).  I use it in a cocktail if I don't have any club soda or tonic water handy.   I can stop by a Bed Bath and Beyond on my way home from work to do an exchange, which only costs 16 dollars with one of their $5 coupons.   I've yet to do more than two exchanges in a year.   So, that's $32 bucks a year compared to $60-$72 for the cans.

i had no idea what sodastream was until just now.  i looked them up to figure out what in the hell the article was even talking about, and saw their commercial on youtube.  and i realized i've seen that commercial a bunch of times and never understood what it was for.  i remember all the soda bottles exploding, but i thought the ad was about drinking water instead of soda or something.  the commercial never actually explains what it does, after all.  i don't know if that's bad marketing on their part, or if i'm just stupid.

I have the Primo one, and I've tried the SodaStream syrups. I agree, they're less than spectacular.  I usually just use a bit of Torani sugar-free syrup in my sodas; a bit of their vanilla syrup makes for a really delicious soda.  Too bad they don't have a cola flavor.

And in other news, we continue to be all - f*cked - up about two disparate factions of people with different gods who have been fighting over that same sketchy piece real estate since Methuselah was Pampers.

All while home sweet home is being dismantled, and sold off wholesale as the "law" slowly works it's way up to full blown Fourth Reich level with weekly "month off with pay" killings.

Never mind the usual cast of idiot punks, thugs, droolers and wanna be militia types blowing away anything without an orange vest on.

I mean, far be it from me to sound insensitive, but shouldn't we sort of let these people do what they seem to be wont to do, with or without us, and wipe our own asses for a change?

Nope, Christians created a fork off the trunk about 2000 years ago, and refactored the godbase pretty substantially; it's no longer faith-compatible with the original project.

Ditto the Muslims a few centuries later.

Islam and Judaism are mostly compatible at their core, but for historical reasons they don't mix well in a heterogeneous environment.

Judaism - Mac
Islam - Linux
Christianity - Windows
