Tom Clancy is dead so the name Jack Ryan is free to change to whatever type of softer gentler eco warrior  the producers want.  This movie is not based on any writing of Clancy. One of the high point of reading Clancy's books was his ability to include real life actions and situations with actual intelligence and secrete information. Part of the reason he turned down advisory positions with the US government is because his books would had to have chapters  remove to comply with nondisclosure agreements required for such positions. Now that his dead they can take the name Jack Ryan and put him into nonsensical situation without Clancy downing the talking show round saying it is a rubbish plot filled with the dreams and desires of the producers.
Next Jack Ryan will be cast is fast and furious 7. If you are going to make a movie without a realist plot, might as well  have cars drive fast and blow things up, toss in some shooting and book it done.

FTFA: Anyway - Jack Ryan is able to stop the young church-going Christian before he was able to blow up Wall Street. Jack Ryan saves the day. Thank you, Jack Ryan. The US is once again safe from the dreaded Christian terrorists.

Two things:

1.) SPOILER ALERT, douchebag. Not that anybody doesn't know how it's going to end, but still...
2.) The thought of Christian terrorists isn't that far off-base...

The movie starts out with scenes from a London campus on 9-11-2001. Yet, Hollywood chose not to show the actual towers crumbling to the ground. That would be too offensive - to Muslims.

Oh for F*CK'S SAKE. Maybe they don't need to show it because everyone in American has seen the footage a million times. And you just know if they DID show it Fox would be whining about how they were celebrating terrorism and helping spread jihadist propaganda.

Or maybe they didn't want to either 1: use actual footage of one of the most nationally scarring events of the last 20 years or 2: computer animate one of the most nationally scarring events of the last 20 years for a farking spy thriller movie no one actually cares about.

These people are insane. They've developed a psychosexual Pavlovian response to 9/11 and terrorism. They NEED to reaffirm that Muslims are evil and they NEED to feel morally superior because of that event.

Also, too offensive to Muslims? More like too uncomfortable for most Americans, still. We're well past "too soon," but it's still a sore subject and not really something most of us feel comfortable watching as an entertaining fictionalization. In a spy thriller. That no one cares about.

We should defer to the Conservatives, experts at fantasy, be it Santa Claus, or Jack Ryan.

Did I see the same movie? I just thought the Russian Orthodox church was there to establish Russia the backdrop, architecture, perhaps the mortality of the villain. I never got the impression it was a radical religious plot...? Since America, (whether we like it or not) is an overwhelming Christian nation, where...what...why would there be a Christian upon Christian plot? What is this, I don't even...

I don't want to see any footage of 9-11. It is seared into my brain.

Come on now, no Christian can be a terrorist.   The IRA, the murders who bombed abortion clinics, the white supremists and so forth aren't really terrorists.   Or they aren't really Christian.  Or it was okay because Baby Jesus didn't cry.  Or something.

I wrote off Hollywood/Clancy when they perverted "Sum of All Fears" for the movie, substituting neo-nazis for the muzzie terrorists in the original, which was a damm good read. All because they were too afraid of offending the muzzies. Fark 'em.

Fox wants credit for their terrorism.

2014-01-20 09:26:15 PM
Well after the liberals were so bitterly disappointed to find out that the Boston bombing was, as expected by everyone with sense... just more jihadist scum, liberals have to dream up these crazy scenarios to feel good about themselves I suppose. If you can't have actual honest to goodness fundamentalist Christian terrorists from 'the right', then just make up some for a movie because as liberals are want to remind us, being honest about the religion terrorists follow is probably racist somehow.

And now the liberals can get back to pretending that if this movie actually had been about Islamic terrorists from the middle east, you know, a FAR more likely scenario... That they wouldn't be screaming an indignant fit about how horribly intolerant we all are. Just imagine this Fox news article, with the volume and shrillness cranked up by a factor of about a 100, and you will be able to picture in your mind precisely the sort of reaction you would get from liberals if the bad guys were any group of people they feel are just 'victims' somehow or another.

This reboot worked for what it's worth.  Yes the antagonist in this movie is Russian but the motivation isn't remotely religious but nationalistic.  It's a believable enough scenario for the movie and not outlandishly silly like the rewrite of "The Sum of all Fears"

Well, you're looking for "sources of terror". Fox News, the IRS, and drivers on cell phones doing 45mph in the center lane of a 60mph freeway cause more daily terror than Al Queda. Okay, that last one has more to do with ire.

DRTFA, but I assume that for Hollywood it's a no win situation when trying to make a movie in modern times and dealing with the issue of terrorism. Like in "Sum of All Fears" they had to change it from Muslims to Neo-Nazis. But what happened? Wharrbgle from the right. However, if they HAD made it with Muslims, then you'd get wharrgarble from the left. Heck, even in a movie that takes place three hundred years from now and dealing with the issues of terrorism, they'll still try to "whitewash" it. I'm looking at YOU "Star Trek Into Darkness!"

/if they had just included a line about Khan having surgery done to look like the whitest guy in the galaxy to disguise himself I wouldn't have had a problem with the story.

Well I'm waiting for Putin to name himself Czar. Overrun /or the way things are going pass through the Ukraine and end up in a newly renamed Constantinople. Oh and sure Turkeys in NATO now but we may look favorably on a Russian incursion if radical Muslims took control of the Turk government.

Red October was only good because of the true story it was based on and later the "liberal hollywood fools" who made the characters truly come alive.

I mean I'm harder on Clancy than is probably fair, but he wasn't all that, and I swear when I read the back cover and it said, more than once, "a secret agency known only to the president" or even "not even the president knows about" I had to get treatment for rolling eyeball syndrome.

And then there is this:

Television screens and reactions to what's on them can be shown, but I seem to recall New Yorkers getting a bit upset about people pimping the dead and tending to write angry letters about such things.  At least more than Muslims do.

But that gets in the way of the "why can't we have a proper waaaaar?!?!" narrative.

Okay in that case I find the closest relative alive to Nicholas 2nd that I could control and set up something like what the Newly formed German Empire did after the Franco Prussian war. A King (Kaiser) and a Chancellor. As well as a parliament or Reichstag. ( Google for details) At least thats what Bismark did and he was pretty damn start and powerful in his day.
