I've been to the Kiyomizu Temple which showed up in Love Hina... so I guess I've got a head start on the app... and most of Tokyo is in You're Under Arrest at some point or another... so there's a few more in my favor.

I've been to some of the spots in Chicago that show up in Gunsmith Cats. That counts right?

Interesting.  But as my favorite anime happens in an alternate universe/dystopian future Transylvania, it's gonna be tough....

\CSB: The day I visited Arches National Park last year, I came back to the hotel, turned on the TV... and watched where I had just been on the opening credits of  Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.  Still all warm & fuzzy over it, even if the odds are kinda favorable for doing it.

So, is this going to include the Jusenkyo Cursed Springs or not?

(Yeah, I know, 1. Not in Japan and 2. (probably) Not real)

You have to be pretty dedicated to go to some of these places. The Lucky Star shrine mentioned in the article is at least a good 1.5 hour, multiple transfer train ride from downtown Tokyo.

I visited it once, several years after the show had been broadcast. Still lots of Lucky Star stuff around. Most amusing part was after I finished taking a photo of the main gate, only to turn around and see a lineup of several people had formed behind me. Wasn't a weekend either.

// Also visited Kyoto Animation's studio. Middle of nowhere as well.

When I was visiting my brother in Japan a few years ago, I asked him if I could visit Takeshi's Castle.

Meh.  Swordfish is nice but it's a converted racer: speed over comfort.  I'll be more than happy in the Bebop sure I'll taker a while longer to get there but I'll have been getting a head start on the drinking.

I'd rather visit the studio where they do Gaki no Tsukai

/Yeah, I know, the people that get into the studio are heavily screened. You will never find a gaijin there.

Subby why can't I visit Neo Tokyo?!!?  Everyone knows you just need to find a small child and give him 4 marijuanas and then retreat to a safe distance.  *Poof* Neo Tokyo is started.

Narita airport
TCAT station or NEX station

I went there on Christmas Day 2013.  Well, Hakone, anyway.  Close enough.

I don't pay much attention to anime, but since I resided in the country six years ago, I'd like to double check where I've been and see if it's in shows.

Well yeah, because Academy City isn't real.

And the roads of Initial D is old hat to the point where it's trivial to find videos of people driving the actual roads on YouTube, oftentimes set to M.O.V.E. eurobeat.

If nothing else, Tokyo-3 had to be a contractor's wet dream, considering how many times they have to rebuild the damn thing.

And from what I understand the local Police are well aware of where that road is and what people did on it so any foreigner showing up in a car they think is going to try their hand at it is likely to have the PoPo sat right behind them the whole way, especially if they do it at night.

And the funniest one I saw on YouTube was an Izuzu minivan set to Eurobeat.

dewright_ca: Macross Island

Pearl Harbour?  If I remember they're in about the same rough location but I don't think you'll find a crashed alien space ship there.

2014-01-21 07:45:05 AM
I don't think the Miyazaki films are set in real locations and to be honest they make up the bulk of anime that I'd ever watch more than once.

Other notables
Akira - so no hope there
5 Centimeters Per Second - uh yeah I'm pretty sure I'll ride some trains if i'm in Japan so that's covered
Metropolis - awesome move awesome setting, completely not a real place

etc etc

Basically what I'm saying is that anything that's really worth visiting doesn't actually exist.
