Yes. Yes, you are.

I'm actually kinda nervous about it. But I'm definitely not hoping for a horrible disaster.

You mean like a 36' Berlin Jesse-Owens-shows-up-Hitler disaster (for Hitler), or a '72 Munich disaster? There's a big difference.

Russia is a country that came through complete economic collapse after the fall of the USSR.  Sochi is a major city in Russia, of course there's going to be areas that are run down.

You can pretty much make anything look depressing when you shoot 14 pictures in filter.  Those shots don't look any worse than similar pictures taken of Detroit.

Even their communal outhouse had to be torn down because it was found to be too close to the new road and ruled an eyesore.

"We just never thought they would leave us bang in the middle of a federal highway!"

Poor living conditions are one thing, but if the only place you can fark each other is in the middle of a highway, that's just inhumane.

I hope it is a disaster of biblical proportions. I don't want anyone to get hurt, just to expose Putin for the charlatan that he is.

Sochi is not a major city in Russia. It's a small resort town.

It's no more a major city in Russia than Carmel-by-the-Sea is a major city in the US.  The entire district that Sochi is in (Krasnodar Krai) has only 5 million residents.

Depends on how you define "horrible disaster."  Putin's been an obnoxious little turd lately, especially about gay athletes, so I definitely wouldn't be too sad if this Olympics turns out to be disorganized and embarrassing for the Russians.  That said, I'm not hoping for anything that crosses the line into "people getting hurt" territory.

tl;dr: International embarrassment: more than OK, terrorism: not OK at all.

Absolutely not. Not when handled properly. London 2012 was a resounding success (I went twice).

Sochi is Putin's Berlin. Make of that what you will.

I'm just holding out for the monumental clusterfark that will be Rio '16

Let's see... located in the same latitude as the French Riviera, and they are actively stockpiling manufactured "snow" for the upcoming events.  Yeah, I am looking forward to watching this, just like I'm looking forward to seeing what the weather in Jersey will be like for the Superb Owl. Possible that Putin might want to trade weather with us for the games...

Thank God for the Chronicle's photo slideshow which showed some of the decrepit and poor living conditions in a community outside of Sochi.By the time I had finished viewing the sixth or seventh photo I definitely picked up on the main message being communicated: "As the Winter Games are getting closer, many Sochi residents are complaining that their living conditions only got worse and that authorities are deaf to their grievances."

Hosting the games in Sochi is a pretty good indicator that the world at large doesn't give a fark about gay rights. Some times you forget that when you spend so much time online.

So is Lake Placid NY, home of the 1980 Winter Games.  Somehow I don't think they're going to have a problem finding someplace cold in Russia during the month of February.

I can't find anything more recent at the moment buy China's Olympic site was abandoned after the games. Dunno what they did with it after 2012. If I were mayor of any city, I'd make certain we never bid on the Olympics. Basically it's an excuse to pick the taxpayer's pocket.

"Horrible disaster" means crazy Russian terrorist massacre, so yeah, you are.

There is a certain amount of fiasco in every Olympics. It's the nature of the beast. I'm not a huge fan of them, really. I would never want my home city to host them because it's going to fark up the local economy for a long time.

I suspect Continental versus Mediterranean climates have more to do with it. Lake Placid is also at about the same latitude as Sochi and the Riviera, and it's only at 1800-ft.

Or Nagano, which was at 36 N and 1200-ft. By contrast, Phoenix, AZ is at 33 N and 1100-ft.
