FTFA:Despite annual public-health campaigns about the importance of immunization, only somewhere between one-third and one-quarter of Canadians receive the shot each year, according to Statistics Canada data.

For those coming in without reading the article, people aren't getting the flu shot because they either think that it's unnecessary or they think that it wont do anything or they don't trust it because the shot involves scary science-y words.

I get free flu shots from my work. We have to drive our self, off the clock, to the local med center and give them our company and name and we get a free shot.

Last year I was lazy and didn't do it. Then one day in December I went to the mall doing some holiday shopping and within 24 hours later I was suffering from a nasty strain of flu and my temperature shot up to 104.5°F. One hundred farking four point five within 24 hours. I think my doctor and nurses were surprised that I drove myself there.

This year I got the free shot right away. So far, so good.

Have you seen our government? This country is drowning in pricks.

Also, a lot of places are running out. But hey, people seem to hate Canada for some reason.

Canadians grow up playing hockey.  Americans grow up playing Tee-Ball.  We don't get it because we're tougher than you pansy-asses down in the States.  But if we want one, it's free - and the Health Service will send nurses to your workplace to do them on work time, too.

/Actually, I did get mine.  Had flu that became pneumonia last year, I want no part of that again.

Out of the thirty years or so I've avoided having a flu shot I had the flu once. It sucked. Haven't had it again since. Although I admire the dedication that people have to producing a strain of influenza that's tougher and more advanced than our collective immune systems can handle.

I got my flu shot yesterday. I was feeling groggy this morning, I'm pretty sure it's autism.

It is always fun explaining to the health nurses my health complications (lost part of right lung, pulmonary hypertension, hypercoagulability) Most of them look appalled and agree I should get the shot. This year she said "Holy fark! That's horrible, way too farkin' young for that shiat. Errr, don't tell anyone I swore, ok? And seriously, get the shot, every year!"

I tried to get a flu shot down at the drug-store but I ended up having to fight off three wolves & a bear in the parking lot. Lost my health-card in the melee.

Too many stories about epidemics and deaths in the west, some in the east, too. Went and got it for the first time a couple of weeks ago at the local Rexall. No waiting, never felt a thing. Got some lovely coupons for my trouble, too. I don't use coupons.

Flu shots don't work.

SacriliciousBeerSwiller: Flu shots don't work.

Except when they do.

Every years shot is good for three flu viruses,  if you are exposed to one of those three you are good, one that didn't make it into that years shot, you get sick.  Some years they are better at picking the three than others.  This year has the H1N1 covered and that seems to be the one around this year.  Taa Daa.

I haven't been legitimately sick since I was hospitalized for asthma in grade 3.

/don't fix what isn't broken.
//something about lots of sick people in doctor's offices.

So get the nasal spray.

2014-01-20 04:54:59 PM
I'll admit it.

I didn't get the shot this year.

But, 1) I'm not Canadian, and 2) I got mine last year and 3) the flu I had in October 09 was likely the H1N1 flu, but no one is willing to do a titer to find out for me.

I was sick for 9 days straight and ended up coughing blood and on antibiotics because they thought bacterial pneumonia was setting in, so you'd think I'd go get the shot, but phobia of needles is severe.  Like, I get light headed just thinking about it severe.  I can see others get a shot, but thinking about me getting one....... Fark no.

Plus they're running low, so I'll let someone that probably statistically needs one more than me have it.

//farkingfarkingfarking hate needles!!!! so... any excuse to avoid it.
//Up to date on TDaP, need MMR booster still....

My skis are frozen under a 20 foot tall snowdrift so I can't get into town. I'll just have to wait 8 more months til winter is over

But then you'll have to deal with road construction.  Better just eat a whole lot of moose kidney, you'll be fine.

There's a version which is a nasal spray. Ask for it specifically.

Yep, and if you can't do it for some reason:

* Stretch and relax
* Breathe in
* [Shot goes in]
* Breathe out slowly.  I usually blow or occasionally hiss.
* Whatever position you were in when the shot went in, HOLD IT.  Relaxed is preferred, but a held tense is WAY better than moving with the needle in your arm.
* [shot comes out]
* Relax.

/Allergy shots.  2 shots twice a week for a year and then 4 years of maintenance (so every 2 weeks instead of twice a week).
//And with flu shots, they've made it pretty much instant.  It's not even a needle anymore.  It more like a tiny needle gun where they just shoot it into your arm and then you're done.  So it's literally a tiny little poke instead of "OH GOD, there's a needle in my arm and it's stuck here for the next 30 seconds."

I got a flu shot and I went on a vision quest and now I'm supposed to find the Entity of Outward Appearances to get my parking validated (if I understand that part right), and this Entity guy apparently lives somewhere in friggin' Jersey, and my vacation days are already used up, so what, I'm supposed to drive out there on a Friday night, and drive all the way back on Sunday, because a purple frog might have told me to.

THANKS OBAMA.

Canadian here - I don't get the flu shot and never will , it is a stupid waste of government money  that does nothing but line the pharma and doctors pockets and makes mindless soccer moms feel good  meanwhile people go with out  basic health care.

Of course, Gonzalez is just one of millions of Canadians who don't bother with flu vaccinations.

Sounds American to me.
